[A physical restraint device to facilitate rehabilitation in critically ill patients].

Physical restraints are widely used in hospitalized and critically ill patients, especially in intensive care unit (ICU), to prevent adverse events such as the accidental removal of various monitoring leads, therapeutic tubes, and self-injury or injury to others due to delirium and irritation. The existing restraint measures directly bind the upper limbs of the patients to the hospital bed, which often brings psychological harm to the patients and leads to disuse muscular atrophy. Early rehabilitation therapy can help improve the prognosis of patients, but it is difficult to be widely used in I

PHYSICAL RESTRAINTS IN INTENSIVE CARE: EXPERIENCES OF PATIENTS, FAMILIES AND NURSES.

Critically ill patients admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) often require many invasive procedures and medical devices (Martin and Mathisen 2005). While these interventions are a necessity, they can potentially cause patients a great amount of pain and discomfort, often leading to restlessness and agitation (Langley et al. 2011).

The Ethical Tightrope of Physical and Environmental Restraint in ICU: A Balancing Act.

Physical and environmental restraints are synonymous with intensive care unit (ICU) practices in many countries around the world. The ICU environment is highly complex, and it is essential to maintain patient safety, but this can often be to the detriment of patients' autonomy. This article examines the ethical challenges that arise from the use of physical and environmental restraints in the intensive care unit (ICU). The article provides insights from both the patient and clinician perspectives using a real-life-informed fictional case and aims to shed light on the intricate ethical landscap

[Safety problems associated with using physical restraint devices on the elderly].

The use of physical restraint devices on frail elderly could have significant negative consequences on their health. Apart from complications due to prolonged immobility, the use of this procedure is associated with other serious adverse effects which occur when a person is restricted in a position which carries a risk of asphyxiation. The devices most implicated in these incidents are bedrails, vests and restraining belts. Physical restraint could also be associated as much with the sudden death of patients, due to the stress that it causes, as with injuries from falling. This article present

Characteristics of nursing home residents and physical restraint: a systematic literature review.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To analyse and to summarise factors associated with nursing home residents' characteristics which could lead to physical restraint, and to investigate the consequences of physical restraint use for this population. BACKGROUND: Even though the application of physical restraint is highly controversial, prevalence rates show that it is a common intervention in nursing homes. Residents' characteristics seem to be important to predict the use of physical restraint. Evidence suggests that restrained nursing home residents may have physical and psychological disadvantages as a c

Knowledge, attitude and practice of intensive care unit nurses about physical restraint.

BACKGROUND: Physical restraint is mainly used in intensive care units (ICUs) to prevent delirious or agitated patients from removing tubes and lines connected to them. However, inappropriate use of physical restraint could have many detrimental physical effects on the patient, such as nerve damage, asphyxiation or even death. AIM: The aim of the study is to investigate nurses' knowledge, attitude and practice of physical restraint in ICUs in Jordanian hospitals, about which little is known. DESIGN: A descriptive and cross-sectional design was used. METHODS: A convenience sample of 400 nurse

Comparison of biochemical stress indicators in juvenile captive estuarine crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus) following physical restraint or chemical restraint by midazolam injection.

Using a prospective, randomized study design we demonstrate that midazolam sedation minimizes acidosis compared with physical restraint in captive juvenile estuarine crocodiles during handling or noninvasive procedures at preferred body temperature. A dose of midazolam (5.0 mg/kg) was administered intramuscularly into the forelimb of 20 male estuarine crocodiles weighing 2-3.5 kg. Their heart and respiratory rate and degree of sedation were monitored until recovery and then daily for 7 subsequent days. Blood samples were taken at 30, 60, 90, 180, and 360 min. We recorded lactate, partial press

What factors contribute to the need for physical restraint in institutionalized residents in Taiwan?

BACKGROUND: In Taiwan, physical restraint is commonly used in institutions to protect residents from falling or injury. However, physical restraint should be used cautiously to avoid side effects, such as worse cognition, mobility, depression, and even death. OBJECTIVES: To identify the rate of physical restraint and the associated risk factors in institutionalized residents in Taiwan. METHODS: A community-based epidemiological survey was conducted from July 2019 to February 2020 across 266 residential institutions. Among the estimated 6,549 residents being surveyed, a total of 5,752 finishe
