Effects of Alcohol Use on Patient Retention in HIV Care in East Africa.

We sought to investigate the association between hazardous alcohol use and gaps in care for people living with HIV over a long-term follow-up period. Adults who had participated in our previously published Phase I study of hazardous alcohol use at HIV programs in Kenya and Uganda were eligible at their 42 to 48 month follow-up visit. Those who re-enrolled were followed for an additional ~ 12 months. Hazardous alcohol use behavior was measured using the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) tool. Deidentified clinical data were used to assess gaps in care (defined as failure to retu

Palliative care nurses' views on their retention intention: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Palliative care is in short supply worldwide, and nurses are core members of its implementation. However, there is currently a severe shortage of palliative care nurses. Therefore, enhancing their retention intention and attracting more nurses to join this field is an urgent issue that needs to be addressed. METHODS: This research is based on the theoretical framework of the Job Demands-Resources Model (JD-R). In the qualitative research, the phenomenological research method was adopted,And a semi-structured interview guide was used to collect the data. Each interview lasts for ap

Patient-Centered, Culturally Responsive Behavioral Economics Intervention to Optimize Retention in HIV Care.

Behavioral economics is a field that optimizes decision-making by nudging people to a desired behavior. Interventions based on behavioral economics principles have been used to improve HIV outcomes. According to the CDC, culturally responsive methods have been used to adapt other types of HIV interventions. However, culturally responsive methods have not been used to adapt HIV-focused behavioral economics interventions. This study identifies patient-centered perspectives from both patients and providers regarding the culturally responsive development of behavioral economics-based interventions

One Pill, Once a Day: Simplified Treatment Regimens and Retention in HIV Care.

Simplified drug regimens may improve retention in care for persons with chronic diseases. In April 2013, South Africa adopted a once-daily single-pill human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) treatment regimen as the standard of care, replacing a multiple-pill regimen. Because the regimens had similar biological efficacy, the shift to single-pill therapy offered a real-world test of the impact of simplified drug-delivery mechanisms on patient behavior. Using a quasi-experimental regression discontinuity design, we assessed retention in care among patients starting HIV treatment just before and just

Successful expanded clinic network collaboration and patient tracing for retention in HIV care.

BACKGROUND: There are more than 7,800 people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in Victoria, Australia. Crucial in maximising the individual and population level benefits from antiretroviral therapy (ART) is understanding how to achieve patient retention in care and the factors that drive it. This study was an expansion of a 2015 assessment of HIV-care retention in Victoria, which sought out to determine whether the inclusion of a broader range of HIV-healthcare sites would yield more accurate estimates of retention in HIV-care. We aimed to improve our understanding of HIV-care ret

Entry and retention in medical care among HIV-diagnosed persons: a meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: A 'test and treat' strategy to reduce HIV transmission hinges on linking and retaining HIV patients in care to achieve the full benefit of antiretroviral therapy. We integrated empirical findings and estimated the percentage of HIV-positive persons in the United States who entered HIV medical care soon after their diagnosis; and were retained in care during specified assessment intervals. METHODS: We comprehensively searched databases and bibliographic lists to identify studies that collected data from May 1995 through 2009. Separate meta-analyses were conducted for entry into care

Retention processed placental membrane versus standard of care in treating diabetic foot ulcers.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are a severe complication for diabetic patients, significantly impacting patient quality of life and healthcare system efficiency. Traditional standard of care (SOC) treatments are inadequate for many patients, necessitating the use of advanced wound care products, such as human placental membranes. We studied a real-world population of large, hard-to-heal and complicated wounds, otherwise under-studied in the wound care literature. To this end, we conducted a retrospective cohort analysis to compare the effectiveness of a human placental amnion/chorion membrane pro

Jail-Based Case Management Improves Retention in HIV Care 12 Months Post Release.

Continuous and coordinated HIV care is essential for persons living with HIV to benefit from the advances in medical treatment of the disease. Approximately one in seven individuals living with HIV pass through correctional facilities annually. While sentenced individuals may receive discharge planning services, detainees in local jails usually do not. The multisite evaluation of the EnhanceLink initiative demonstrated that jail based services including discharge planning were associated with high rates of linkage to community HIV care upon release. Follow up for the multisite evaluation was l

Masculinity, resources, and retention in care: South African men's behaviors and experiences while engaged in TB care and treatment.

RATIONALE: Globally, the prevalence of tuberculosis (TB) disease is significantly higher among men compared to women. This is compounded by men's poorer uptake of TB testing and treatment, and worse outcomes for smear conversion and successful treatment completion compared to women; in South Africa specifically, TB accounts for a large portion of sex-specific life expectancy differences. OBJECTIVE: To understand men's unique barriers to accessing care and their needs while engaged in TB treatment, we conducted a qualitative study with men currently in or who recently completed TB treatment to

Retention in Care among HIV-Infected Pregnant Women in Haiti with PMTCT Option B.

Background. Preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV relies on engagement in care during the prenatal, peripartum, and postpartum periods. Under PMTCT Option B, pregnant women with elevated CD4 counts are provided with antiretroviral prophylaxis until cessation of breastfeeding. Methods. Retrospective analysis of retention in care among HIV-infected pregnant women in Haiti was performed. Logistic regression was used to identify risk factors associated with loss to follow-up (LFU) defined as no medical visit for at least 6 months and Kaplan-Meier curves were created to show LFU timing. Retention in care of adults and adolescents living with HIV in 13 U.S. areas.

BACKGROUND: Monitoring immunologic and virologic responses to antiretroviral therapy in HIV-1-infected patients is an important component of treatment in the United States. However, little population-based information is available on whether HIV-infected persons receive the recommended tests or continuous care. METHODS: Using data from 13 areas reporting relevant HIV-related tests to national HIV surveillance, we determined retention in care in persons older than 12 years living with HIV at the end of 2009. We assessed retention in care, defined as ≥2 CD4 or viral load tests at least 3 months

Disparities in Retention in Care Among Adults Living with HIV/AIDS: A Systematic Review.

As national HIV prevention goals aim to increase the proportion of persons living with HIV, determining existing disparities in retention in care will allow for targeted intervention. The purpose of this systematic review was to identify existing disparities in retention in care. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis Protocols (PRISMA-P) 2015 guided this systematic review. Electronic databases, including PubMed/MEDLINE, CINAHL, Sociological Collection, PsychInfo, and Cab Direct/Global Health, were systematically searched and twenty studies were included. This r

Linkage to Care, Retention in Care and Treatment Uptake Among Patients Diagnosed With Chronic Hepatitis B in Norway, 2008-2022.

People living with chronic hepatitis B infection (PLWHB) need life-long care to monitor liver health and treatment need. Data on clinical follow-up for PLWHB are essential to monitor the health system response to this infection. We used linked national registry data to calculate the proportion of diagnosed PLWHB in Norway linked to specialist care (LTC), treated and retained in specialist or primary care (RIC) from 2008 to 2022. We described the outcomes by time, age, sex, region of residence, place of birth and residence status. Using log-binomial regression, we explored how these factors wer

The Meaning of Community Characteristics in the Recruitment and Retention of Rural Health Care Professionals.

INTRODUCTION: Rural communities face shortages of health care professionals, leading to reduced access to care and increased patient mortality. While prior studies have identified factors that positively influence recruitment and retention, limited research has examined how community characteristics shape these experiences. Authors of this study aimed to better understand the role of community characteristics in recruiting and retaining rural health care professionals in Kansas. METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with physicians, advanced practice providers (APPs), and nurses working

Rural health care workforce retention measures: A rapid scoping review.

PURPOSE: Rural Veterans face persistent barriers to care, often exacerbated by health care workforce shortages. Although recruitment initiatives are important, retaining providers in rural areas is equally critical to sustaining access and continuity of care. This rapid scoping review examined how "rural workforce retention" is defined and measured in the peer-reviewed literature and synthesized recommended reporting elements to improve clarity and comparability. METHODS: Six bibliographic databases were searched (2014-2025) for English-language studies of rural health care in the United Stat
