Sickle cell disease (SCD) is associated with an increased incidence of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism which contributes to the morbidity and mortality associated with it. The predisposition to thrombosis has been attributed to the different blood components including platelets, the coagulation system and recently damaged red cells. This article discusses the possible role of reticulocytes in promoting thrombus formation in individuals with SCD and suggests a similar pathogenetic mechanism in thromboembolism associated with other hemolytic states.

PURPOSE: We describe a newborn baby boy with anemia in whom human parvovirus (HPV) antibodies were detected in his serum.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Severe reticulocytopenia and anemia lasted until day 11 after his birth. Thereafter reticulocytosis was observed. Work-ups for immune hemolytic anemia, fetomaternal hemorrhage, placental hemorrhage, intrauterine infections were negative by clinical and laboratory analysis. We report a rare case who developed pure red cell aplasia (PRCA) and pseudothrombocytopenia associated with hepatitis. A 50-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital because of acute hepatitis A. On the 22nd hospital day, normocytic normochromic anemia without reticulocytosis was developed. Forty-six Nigerian adult sickle cell anaemia patients were investigated, each in sickle cell crisis and steady state.
