Anastomoses between vessels of the fundus may occur as congenital malformations or secondary to vascular diseases affecting the eye. Congenital anastomoses can be of the racemose hemangioma type, with severe malformation of the retinal vessels, ocular complications, and neurologic manifestations, or as simple A-V shunts with visual impairment but limited tendency to show other ocular or neurologic involvement. These anastomoses must be distinguished from other vascular malformations like telangiectasis (Leber, Coats) or the angiomatous lesions of von Hippel's disease. Secondary anastomoses may

The myelinated nerve fibers (MNF) are o congenital anomaly characterized by the extension of the myelinisation process anterior from the lamina cribosa. The incidence of myelinated nerve fibers is 0.3-0.6% in patients and 0.54% in eyes from autopsies. Although these represent benign lesion, rarely are associated with retinal abnormalities: vascular abnormality (retinal telangiectasis, cranial-facial lesions, coloboma of the iris, keratoconus, myopia/strabismus, amblyopia). Myelinated nerve fibers asSociated with juxtapapillary haemorrhages was not reported in the available literature. We descr

BACKGROUND: The rare occurrence of iris neovascularisation and choroidal (subretinal) neovascularisation in patients with choroidal melanoma has been reported. However, the occurrence of preretinal neovascularisation (NVE) fed from the retinal circulation in eyes with choroidal melanoma is far less frequently reported.
METHODS: Three case reports of choroidal melanoma with the very rare finding of overlying NVE.
RESULTS: The three patients had choroidal melanomas, localised serous retinal detachment, and NVE. Two cases showed definite retinal capillary non-perfusion, and one of these two cas

Macular Telangiectasia (MacTel) is a rare retinal vascular disorder, with Type 3a MacTel being a distinct form characterized by retinal ischemia with the classical findings of MacTel, such as juxtafoveal telangiectasis, right-angled venules, and deep capillary plexus involvement without central nervous system findings. This case presents a novel X-shaped lesion pattern and ischemic features, expanding the known imaging spectrum of MacTel. A 53-year-old male with diabetes and a history of aripiprazole use presented with persistent blurred vision, a black curtain sensation, and metamorphopsia in

Coats disease is an exudative retinal vasculopathy characterised by presence of yellow-golden deposits in the retina and retinal detachment. Subretinal fluid drainage performed as a part of therapeutic management makes the fluid amenable to cytological examination. Infection by Toxoplasma may closely simulate the ocular symptoms seen in Coats disease. Awareness of the cytological findings in Coats disease helps to clinch accurate diagnosis. We herein present a case of Coats disease with many histiocyte-like cells with plentiful intracytoplasmic melanin pigment in cytology smears from subretina

Coats plus syndrome (CPS), also referred to as cerebroretinal microangiopathy with calcifications and cysts (CMCC), is a rare autosomal recessive disease that primarily targets the microvasculature of the retina, brain, bones, and gastrointestinal system. This study reports the case of a 24-year-old female patient who was initially diagnosed with familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR) and was lost to follow-up. The patient underwent multimodal retinal imaging, including ultra-widefield swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (SS-OCTA) (DREAM OCT, Intalight). Examination reve

Retinal pathologies are frequently accompanied by retinal vascular responses, including the formation of new vessels by angiogenesis (neovascularization). Pathological vascular changes may also include less well characterized traits of vascular remodeling that are non-neovascular, such as vessel pruning and the emergence of dilated and tortuous vessel phenotypes (telangiectasis). The molecular mechanisms underlying neovascular growth versus non-neovascular remodeling are poorly understood. We therefore undertook to identify novel regulators of non-neovascular remodeling in the retina by using

Coats disease (OMIM 300216) is a form of hereditary retinal dystrophy, which occurs due to congenital abnormality of retinal vessels and features unilateral exudative vitreoretinopathy. Coats disease mostly occurs sporadically; its genetic cause is still undetermined. Molecular genetic research including whole exome sequencing by the NGS method was used to define a genetic cause of the observed phenotype. Two heterozygous variants in different genomic loci associated with other forms of hereditary retinal dystrophy were detected, a rare variant in the HMCN1 gene c.9571C>T, p.(Arg3191Cys), and

INTRODUCTION: In genetic diseases, association between retinal and muscular involvement is uncommon, quite specific and frequently allows the diagnosis. In this context, three types of retinal involvement have been described: retinitis pigmentosa (RP), pattern retinal dystrophy (PRD) and exudative retinitis resembling Coats disease (CD).
STATE OF THE ART: The association between RP, PRD and muscle weakness is highly evocative of a mitochondrial disorder. Extra ocular muscles may be affected, but limb girdle or distal weakness can also be present in association or not with symptoms and signs o

ABSTRACT: Macular telangiectasia type 2 (MacTel) is a rare, bilateral neurodegenerative disease of the macula associated with secondary vascular alterations. Pathophysiologically, Müller cell dysfunction plays a central role. Their loss leads to progressive degeneration of central cone photoreceptors and may secondarily contribute to the development of macular neovascularization (MNV), which affects approximately 10% of patients.
ABSTRACT: A major pathophysiologic mechanism is a disturbance in serine and sphingolipid metabolism. Patients with MacTel have significantly lower blood serine level

A 30-year-old woman with Alport's syndrome was noted to have unilateral retinal telangiectasia. Intravenous fluorescein angiography was performed to help establish the diagnosis. Photocoagulation was not done since visual acuity was good and there was no apparent threat at this time to central vision. To our knowledge, this is the first reported association of retinal telangiectasia with Alport's syndrome.

PURPOSE: To examine the alterations in retinal vascular morphology over an extended follow-up in eyes with macular telangiectasis Type 2 (MacTel2).
METHODS: Eyes with high-quality digital photographs were evaluated. The geometric distortion in baseline images required to emulate the follow-up images was determined and vectors were made that represented the direction and magnitude of changes, to create a warp field. Optical coherence tomography and optical coherence tomography angiography evaluation of the retina was performed.
RESULTS: There were 7 eyes of 4 patients, who had a mean age of 7
