Branch retinal vein occlusion and macroaneurysms.

BACKGROUND: Macroaneurysms can represent common consequences of branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO). The aim of the present study is to evaluate the clinical and angiographic aspects of 31 cases of branch retinal vein occlusions (BRVO) in which retinal macroaneurysms developed, in an attempt to analyze their pathogenic features. METHODS: One hundred and sixty-one consecutive patients affected by BRVO were considered. Each patient underwent an opthalmological examination including fluorescein angiography, at an average interval of two months (range: 1-4 months) from the onset of the disease,

Central retinal vein occlusion associated with cilioretinal artery occlusion.

PURPOSE: To describe the clinical characteristics and pathogenesis of central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) associated with cilioretinal artery occlusion (CLRAO). METHODS: The study included 38 patients (38 eyes) who had CRVO associated with CLRAO and were seen in our clinic from 1974 to 1999. At their first visit to our clinic, all patients provided a detailed ophthalmic and medical history and underwent comprehensive ophthalmic evaluation, color fundus photography, and fluorescein fundus angiography. At each follow-up visit, the same ophthalmic evaluations were performed, except for fluores

Hemi-retinal vein occlusion: Characterizing a rare retinal vasculopathy.

PURPOSE: To characterize hemi-retinal vein occlusion (HRVO) in patients presenting to a multi-tier ophthalmology hospital network. METHODS: This retrospective, hospital-based study analyzed 2,834,616 new patients between August 2010 and June 2021. Patients with a clinical diagnosis of HRVO in at least one eye were included as cases. Data were collected using an electronic medical record system. Data were compared to the findings noted in branch RVO (BRVO) and central RVO (CRVO) patients. RESULTS: HRVO constituted 0.9% ( n = 191) of all the retinal vein occlusions (RVOs), with the mean age be

Central retinal vein occlusion associated with retinal arteriovenous malformation.

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND: Retinal arteriovenous malformations can be seen in a variety of ways and have multiple, associated, ocular changes that can affect vision. The authors report two cases of retinal arteriovenous malformation. In each case, a central retinal vein occlusion developed. METHODS: Each patient underwent clinical examination and fluorescein angiography. One patient was followed over a long period of time. CONCLUSION: The authors propose that a turbulent flow, high intravascular volume, and arteriolar pressure in the venous side of the retinal arteriovenous malformation may lead to

[Congenital retinal arteriovenous fistula and central retinal vein occlusion].

The authors report a case of congenital arteriovenous communication of the retinal near the macula, associated with a central retinal vein occlusion. This occlusion only affected the inferior half-retina, especially the area surrounding the arteriovenous anastomoses. Laser photocoagulation was applied to areas of peripheral ischemia. After a 12 month follow-up, a marked decrease of visual acuity occurred, attributable to severe ischemia and edema in the posterior pole. An extension of the peripheral capillary non perfusion required additional laser treatment. We also observed the reduction in

[Role of the vitreous in retinal neovascularization evaluated by a comparison of central retinal vein occlusion and branch retinal vein occlusion].

Thirty three patients (33 eyes) with central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) and 80 patients (81 eyes) with branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) were studied in an attempt to investigate the role of the vitreous in the formation of retinal neovascularization. All these eyes had some areas of capillary nonperfusion confirmed by fluorescein angiography and no scatter photocoagulation before the first examination. The incidence of new vessels at the optic disc (NVD) in CRVO was not significantly different from that in BRVO. However, the incidence of new vessels elsewhere (NVE) in CRVO was significa

Retinal surgery for treatment of central retinal vein occlusion.

Vitreous surgery with retinal vein cannulation and injection of tissue plasminogen activator was performed in 8 eyes of 8 patients with longstanding visual loss secondary to central retinal vein occlusion. A modest improvement in visual acuity was demonstrated in 4 of the 8 eyes, and 3 of the 8 eyes maintained the preoperative vision. Retinal vein cannulation may offer a new treatment option for patients with central retinal vein occlusion.

[Retinal nerve fiber layer photography in retinal vein occlusion].

In six eyes we found typical signs that could serve as criteria for the differentiation of ischemic from non-ischemic retinal branch vein occlusion. Perimetry showed a mean defect (in the affected area) of more than 10 dB in eyes with defects in the retinal nerve fiber layer in contrast with 5 dB on one eye without nerve fiber defects. Secondly, fluorescein angiography showed ischemic areas in all eyes examined with localized defects in the photographs of the retinal nerve fiber layer. Damage of the retinal nerve fiber layer was observed before capillary obliteration could be detected by fluor

Posterior tractional retinal breaks complicating branch retinal vein occlusion.

A total of 358 patients with branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) were reviewed to examine the relationship between branch retinal vein occlusion with neovascularization elsewhere (NVE), vitreous hemorrhage, and posterior tractional retinal breaks. Twenty-eight of 358 (7.8%) BRVO patients had vitreous hemorrhage. In this group of 28 patients, 24 of the 28 (85.7%) had NVE. Of the 24 BRVO patients with vitreous hemorrhage and NVE, six (21.4%) were found to have posterior tractional retinal breaks adjacent to avulsed neovascular tissue. These data indicate a strong association between BRVO patien

[A case of central retinal vein occlusion followed by branch retinal artery occlusion].

BACKGROUND: The influence of retinal artery circulation on central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) is not well known. CASE: A 73-year-old man with hypertension complained of transient visual loss in his left eye. At initial examination, ophthalmoscopy of his left eye showed mild dilatation and tortuosity of the retinal vein and a few dot hemorrhages. Fluorescein angiography disclosed normal arm-to-retina circulation time and no leakage of dye, but delayed retinal circulation time. These findings indicated venous stasis retinopathy of CRVO. In spite of intravenous infusion of prostaglandin E1 an

[A case of central retinal vein occlusion accompanied by central retinal artery occlusion].

A 81-year-old woman developed central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) in her left eye subsequent to central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO). She noticed sudden visual loss in the left eye. At initial examination, her left visual acuity was 0.03, and only a small visual field was preserved at temporal area. The left fundus showed findings of mild non-ischemic CRVO. In addition white clouded retina was recognized at the left posterior pole which indicated CRAO. FAG showed remarkably prolonged arterial circulation, but no retinal capillary obliteration. Then retinal hemorrhage increased rapidly and

Dermatomyositis-Related Nonischemic Central Retinal Vein Occlusion.

A 25-year-old woman with dermatomyositis suffered a right central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) with visual acuity of 20/40. Examination of the right eye showed vitreous cells, suggesting inflammation of the central retinal vein leading to a CRVO as the presumed mechanism. She was admitted to hospital, and extensive evaluation was negative. She was maintained on corticosteroids to manage her dermatomyositis. One month later, she had macular edema and elevated intraocular pressure. Both resolved with dorzolamide, timolol, and intravitreal bevacizumab, and vision returned to 20/20 in the right e
