[Retroperitoneal fibrosis secondary to metastatic neoplasm revealed by a leg lymphedema].

INTRODUCTION: Diagnosis of retroperitoneal fibrosis is generally delayed and revealed by various non-specific signs. We report the case of an isolated lymphedema of the lower limb revealing retroperitoneal fibrosis complicating a metastatic squamous cell carcinoma. CASE REPORT: In an 83-year-old women, a lymphedema appeared that remained isolated for several months before being associated with alteration in general health. Morphological examinations showed bilateral compression of the urinary excretory tracts and led to the diagnosis of retroperitoneal fibrosis. Histological examination of a

Unusual neoplasms detected in testis cancer patients undergoing post-chemotherapy retroperitoneal lymphadenectomy.

Approximately 30% of patients with disseminated testis cancer who receive platinum-based chemotherapy will experience normalization of tumor markers but have persistent, radiographically evident disease in the retroperitoneum. These patients usually undergo retroperitoneal lymph node dissection. Of 557 patients undergoing post-chemotherapy retroperitoneal lymph node dissection at our university medical center 45 (8.1%) had neoplastic elements distinct from the classical germ cell tumor types within the resected specimens. Examples include various sarcomas in 19 patients (3.7%), other nonsarcom

Primary retroperitoneal neoplasms: CT and MR imaging findings with anatomic and pathologic diagnostic clues.

Primary retroperitoneal neoplasms are a rare but diverse group of benign and malignant tumors that arise within the retroperitoneal space but outside the major organs in this space. Although computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging can demonstrate important characteristics of these tumors, diagnosis is often challenging for radiologists. Diagnostic challenges include precise localization of the lesion, determination of the extent of invasion, and characterization of the specific pathologic type. The first step is to determine whether the tumor is located within the retroperitoneal sp

Surgical approaches and techniques in intraoperative radiotherapy for intra-abdominal, retroperitoneal, and pelvic neoplasms.

Eighty-five patients with locally advanced intra-abdominal, retroperitoneal, and pelvic malignant diseases have been treated at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) with electron beam intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT). In general, IORT was performed after resection to the tumor bed and to areas of locoregional spread. IORT was delivered directly to some unresectable tumors. The median survival for the entire NCI patient group was 13.9 months, with 34% of the patients projected to achieve local control of disease at 5 years. Multiple abutting IORT fields were used in 76% of the patients; they e

Case report: Retroperitoneal solid pseudopapillary neoplasm associated with multiple hepatic metastases.

Solid pseudopapillary neoplasm (SPN) is a rare tumor mostly occurring in the pancreas. They are low-grade malignant tumors of the exocrine pancreas that occasionally metastasize, usually to the liver or peritoneum. Additionally, multiple metastases of extrapancreatic SPN to the liver are extremely rare and have been reported before. This study presents a case of a 13-year-old male patient with retroperitoneal SPN and multiple hepatic metastases. The patient presented with abdominal trauma and underwent enhanced CT, which revealed upper pancreatic occupancy and three hypodense foci in the right

Retroperitoneal Castleman disease masquerading as a pancreatic neoplasm: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Castleman disease (CD) is a rare lymphoproliferative disorder of unclear etiology, often presenting as an asymptomatic, incidentally detected mass. The predominant pathological variants include hyaline vascular, plasma cell, and mixed types. Clinically, CD is classified into unicentric (UCD) and multicentric (MCD) forms. CASE PRESENTATION: Here we report the case of a 34-year-old Indian female with vague left-sided abdominal pain and bilateral lower limb pain, in whom contrast-enhanced CT revealed an incidental well-defined 5.7 × 3.8 × 3.8 cm mass in the gastrohepatic space, initi

Retroperitoneal mixed neuroendocrine non-neuroendocrine neoplasm: A case report and review of literature.

The existence of both neuroendocrine and non-neuroendocrine histology in variable proportion in a lesion has been described by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as mixed neuroendocrine and non-neuroendocrine neoplasm (MiNEN). The pathogenesis of this tumour remains controversial but molecular studies point towards a common monoclonal origin. Tumours are classified as functioning and nonfunctioning based on substances secreted. The nonfunctioning tumours may be discovered due to its local effect. Presented is a 66-year-old male with an intra-abdominal mass, underwent laparotomy and excision b

[Laparoscopic unilateral retroperitoneal lymphadenectomy in non-seminomatous neoplasms of the testis in clinical stage I].

Since June 1993, unilateral laparoscopic retroperitoneal lymph node dissection (LRPLND) was performed in 6 patients diagnosed with clinical stage I nonseminomatous germ cell tumors (NSGCT). All of the patients had undergone prior radical orchiectomy. The testicular cancer was left-sided in three cases and right-sided in three cases. Preoperative staging by means of tumor markers assessment, computerized tomography scan (CT) of the chest and abdomen and chest X-ray was unremarkable for metastatic disease. All procedures were accomplished without any complications in a mean time of 325 min (275

Non-absorbable suture granuloma mimicking a retroperitoneal metastatic implant in a patient with sigmoid neoplasm.

The development of a foreign body granuloma from non-absorbable suture is a relatively uncommon condition, exceptional in the retroperitoneum of patients operated on for colorectal surgery. We report the case of a patient with a history of sigmoid neoplasm showing a retroperitoneal nodule on CT and high activity on PET, mimicking a tumor implant. Pathology found a foreign body granuloma. Foreign body granuloma from suture is a condition that may look identical to tumor relapse or metastatic disease on CT and PET scans, thus requiring pathology confirmation.

Extrapancreatic solid pseudopapillary neoplasm: Report of a case of primary retroperitoneal origin and review of the literature.

Solid pseudopapillary tumors (SPTs) occurring as primary tumors outside the pancreas are exceedingly rare. The present study reports such a case occurring as a non-functional adrenal tumor in a 22-year-old female. The tumor was completely removed from the retroperitoneum by laparoscopic surgery. A well-defined, encapsulated tumor measuring 6×6×5 cm was histologically characterized by a combination of the solid and pseudopapillary growth patterns of tumor cells with eosinophilic cytoplasm. Ectopic pancreatic tissue was also found histologically within the resected tumor. On immunostaining, the

Primary borderline retroperitoneal mucinous cystic neoplasm and situs inversus totalis: a case report.

Primary retroperitoneal mucinous cystic neoplasms (PRMCNs) are rare tumors classified into cystadenoma, PRMCN with borderline malignancy (PRMCN-BM), and cystadenocarcinoma. We report a 60-year-old woman with left flank abdominal pain whose MRI revealed situs inversus totalis alongside a complex cystic lesion in the left retroperitoneum measuring 4.8 × 5.2 × 4.5 cm. She underwent laparotomy with complete resection of the lesion, and histopathology confirmed a primary retroperitoneal neoplasm with borderline malignancy, with an uneventful postoperative course and no recurrence after 8 months. Retroperitoneal paraganglioma mimicking a solid pseudopapillary neoplasm of the pancreatic tail and confirmed by percutaneous biopsy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Retroperitoneal paraganglioma (RPGL) is an uncommon extra-adrenal neuroendocrine tumor. When located adjacent to the pancreas, RPGL may mimic solid pseudopapillary neoplasm of the pancreas (SPN/SPTP) because both lesions may present as large cystic-solid masses with nonspecific symptoms and non-diagnostic conventional tumor markers. Percutaneous biopsy may establish the diagnosis but can be hazardous when RPGL has not been excluded. CASE PRESENTATION: A 44-year-old man presented with abdominal distension. He had no history of hypertension, headache, palpitations, or profuse sweati

End-to-end deep learning model for the diagnosis and segmentation of primary retroperitoneal neoplasm: a multicenter cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Primary retroperitoneal neoplasms (PRNs) are a diverse group of tumors that pose significant diagnostic challenges. Currently, no multicenter-validated diagnostic model exists for multiple PRN types based on computed tomography (CT) images. This study aimed to develop and validate an end-to-end deep learning model, REMIND (REtroperitoneal neoplasMs artificial-INtelligence Diagnosis), for the accurate diagnosis and segmentation of PRNs using enhanced CT images. METHODS: Patients from 12 Chinese centers between January 2012 and June 2024 were involved in this study. The dataset comp

Primary retroperitoneal mucinous cystic neoplasm of borderline malignancy with KRAS and GNAS co-mutation: a case report.

Primary retroperitoneal mucinous cystic neoplasms are rare retroperitoneal tumors, which are histologically similar to mucinous cystic neoplasms of the ovaries. Only 31 cases of primary retroperitoneal mucinous cystic neoplasm with borderline malignancy (PRMCN-BM) have been reported (26 in women and five in men). We describe an additional male patient with PRMCN-BM. A 39-year-old man presented to our hospital with back pain. Twelve years earlier, he had undergone an orchiectomy for a germ cell tumor. Computed tomography showed a 6.9- × 4.4-cm cystic mass in the left pararenal space. Laparoscop

Neoplasm mimics of rheumatologic presentations: sialadenitis, ocular masquerade syndromes, retroperitoneal fibrosis, and regional pain syndromes.

IgG4-RSD should be suspected in any patient presenting with lacrimal or salivary gland enlargement, particularly if male and manifesting mild glandular dysfunction. A serum IgG4 level, if increased, may be helpful, although a gland biopsy staining for IgG4-positive plasma cells is the definitive test. Primary low-grade B cell lymphomas of the glandular tissue, specifically MALT lymphoma and other glandular malignancy, should be considered, particularly in patients with asymmetric glandular enlargement. Patients with idiopathic uveitis should have a thorough evaluation to exclude malignancy, in

Resection of advanced stage malignant retroperitoneal neoplasms with tumor thrombus extending into the right atrium: report of four cases.

Surgery for retroperitoneal neoplasms with a tumor thrombus extension into the right atrium is challenging. This study reviewed four surgical cases of advanced stage malignant neoplasms with the tumor thrombus extending into the right atrium. The malignant neoplasms involved the kidney in two patients, and the liver and adrenal gland in one each. The tumor thrombus was removed through a longitudinal cavotomy and right atriotomy in all cases. The inferior vena cava reconstruction was performed by directly closing it in one patient and by pericardial patch suturing in another. Cardiopulmonary by

Case Report: Delayed diagnosis of pancreatic solid pseudopapillary neoplasm in a boy initially misdiagnosed as traumatic retroperitoneal hematoma.

Solid pseudopapillary neoplasm (SPN) of the pancreas is a rare pancreatic tumor with low-grade malignant potential. It predominantly occurs in adolescent girls and young women but can also affect boys. SPN may contain hemorrhagic or cystic components that can be mistaken for a post-traumatic hematoma when patients present after abdominal injury. We report a 12-year-old boy whose pancreatic tail lesion was initially interpreted as a traumatic retroperitoneal hematoma after minor blunt trauma at age 7. Ultrasound-guided drainage yielded hemorrhagic fluid with non-elevated amylase levels and nega

Retroperitoneal-first dissection approach at the dorsal space for a huge serous cystic neoplasm of the pancreatic tail: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Large tumors of serous cystic adenomas in the pancreatic body-to-tail severely compress the surrounding organs and retroperitoneal space. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a unique surgical challenge for distal pancreatectomy (DP). We present the case of a patient who had a massive mass lesion measuring more than 20 cm in size that had been misdiagnosed as a retroperitoneal tumor by the previous hospital. However, an expert radiologist at our institute diagnosed serous cystadenoma of the pancreas based on imaging characteristics. We decided to perform retroperitoneal space first disse
