Secondary findings (SF) identified in massive parallel sequencing raise important clinical and healthcare related questions. To get an overview on current practices of European healthcare providers (HCP), we conducted a cross-sectional survey study among 39 stakeholders-predominantly senior medical and laboratory geneticists-from 15 European countries participating in the European Reference Network for Genetic Tumour Risk Syndromes (ERN GENTURIS). Respondents reported considerable heterogeneity in SF management and reporting, even within countries. While 31% of responding HCP return findings f

BACKGROUND: There is an ongoing global debate regarding the return of individual genetic findings (IGF) in the field of biobanking. Various models for returning these findings are actively discussed, and strategies for their implementation are increasingly being developed in the context of biobanks. This study aims to analyze the perspectives of the public and experts on returning IGF to biobank participants in Lithuania. Additionally, it seeks to contribute to the discussion on identifying the most appropriate IGF return strategy for Lithuanian biobanks. METHODS: We conducted an empirical stu

Whole genome sequencing (WGS) has generated interest as a potential way to enhance and expand the scope of newborn screening (NBS) programs. The effective implementation of WGS in NBS programs relies on several factors, including parental perceptions. Young adults are potential future parents when WGS is expected to be fully implemented in NBS programs. Therefore, it is essential to understand their perspectives regarding the integration of WGS into NBS programs. Given that there is a dearth of studies in this topic, we explored the perceptions of young adults about the integration of WGS into

Prenatal Exome Sequencing (pES) increases the diagnostic rate for genetic disorders in pregnancies with structural abnormalities and substantially impacts parental decision-making regarding pregnancy continuation or termination. Previous qualitative research on parental experiences of pES has typically been performed several months after results were returned to parents. Moreover, parental experiences of pES might be dependent on cultural aspects and country-specific healthcare systems. This research therefore prospectively explores experiences of families undergoing pES in the Netherlands. Ex

Population-wide genomic screening (PWGS) offers a novel approach to identifying individuals at risk for hereditary cancer conditions such as Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer (HBOC) Syndrome and Lynch Syndrome (LS). However, limited data exist on patient experiences and clinical outcomes following result disclosure. This study evaluated participant data from In Our DNA SC, a PWGS initiative offering free, CLIA-certified genomic screening and genetic counseling. We analyzed survey and electronic medical record data of participants who received a clinically actionable result for HBOC or LS an

INTRODUCTION: Biobanking is common in research involving young people living with HIV (YPLHIV). The ethics and policies guiding this practice require careful consideration, especially given the population’s multiple vulnerabilities, like age, HIV status, and limited resources. We examined how well the perspectives of YPLHIV and other stakeholders are reflected in current policies in sub-Saharan Africa, aiming to inform more ethically grounded policy development for specimen biobanking. METHODS: We conducted a review of biobanking-related policy documents from sub-Saharan Africa, primarily from

BACKGROUND: Germline pathogenic and likely pathogenic variants (GPV) in cancer susceptibility genes may guide medical care. However, inaccurate recall of test results by patients may impact the uptake of appropriate medical care, underscoring the importance of accurate recall of results.
METHODS: Among individuals with a confirmed cancer susceptibility GPV that alters cancer risk management, individuals were categorized based on their accuracy of recall. Multiple logistic regression was performed to determine demographic and psychosocial factors associated with recall of test results.

The Electronic Medical Records and Genomics (eMERGE) Network developed and implemented a genome-informed risk assessment (GIRA) to communicate genomic (polygenic risk scores [PRSs], integrated risk scores [IRSs], and monogenic results), clinical, and family history-based risk for 11 chronic diseases and provide recommended healthcare recommendations. GIRA reports have now been returned to 23,840 participants and their providers in a large prospective cohort study. We present here the study design and analysis framework for assessing the attributable impact of GIRA return. Pre-specified outcome

BACKGROUND: Clinical trial participants have a right to know the results of the trials in which they participate. Trial results are often not shared directly with participants and concerns with privacy and resource constraints may prevent researchers from contacting participants after trial completion.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: The objectives of this cross-sectional study were to explore the feasibility of contacting orthopaedic fracture trial participants after trial completion and to determine the preferences and priorities of the participants who wished to know the results.

While guidelines exist for returning genetic, biomarker, and radiologic research results, there is little guidance regarding the return of patient-reported outcome (PRO) research results. As a supplement to an ongoing trial of palliative care for Parkinson's disease, we conducted thirty qualitative, semi-structured interviews of persons with Parkinson's disease, their carepartners, community neurologists, primary care physicians, and researchers to elicit their perceptions of returning PRO research data to persons with Parkinson's disease and carepartners. Interviews were audio-taped, transcri

OBJECTIVE: Describe the attitudes and preferences of adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with congenital heart disease (CHD) toward clinical genetic testing and sharing their genetic data for research.
METHODS: We conducted interviews (n = 20) with AYA patients ages 15-21 years, diagnosed with CHD, who provided age-appropriate assent with parental permission or consent. Interviews were analyzed using analytic memos and applied thematic analysis.
RESULTS: We found three overarching themes. First, AYAs viewed genetic testing as a tool for understanding and preparing for life with CHD. AYAs tho

OBJECTIVES: Incidental findings are commonly identified on emergency department (ED) imaging, often unrelated to the reason for encounter. While system-level interventions have aimed to improve notification and follow-up, less is known about patients' experiences of receiving these unexpected results. We sought to explore ED patients' perspectives on incidental finding notification.
METHODS: A qualitative analysis was conducted of semi-structured interviews of 16 adult ED patients undergoing abdominal CT or ultrasound imaging at a large academic ED. Interviews were originally collected for a

Pharmacogenomics (PGx) is a key component of precision medicine, yet most PGx studies exclude pregnant people and children. The VICE (Vanderbilt Integrated Center of Excellence)-MPRINT (Maternal and Pediatric Precision in Therapeutics): Maternal and Pediatric Pharmacogenetics Trial is a single-center, randomized control trial to assess how PGx testing and return of results influence patients' understanding and perceived utility of PGx testing in a pregnancy and pediatric cohort. Pregnant individuals and families or guardians of children with a chronic health condition aged 0-16 were recruited.

BACKGROUND: Germline genomic sequencing (GGS) is increasingly offered to children with cancer. We explored families' experiences of consent, result-disclosure, and satisfaction in the PREDICT study, a standalone trio-GGS study of unselected, newly-diagnosed patients ( ≤ 21 yrs).
METHODS: Using a convergent parallel mixed-methods design, parents and children ( ≥ 12 yrs) completed questionnaires at baseline/post-consent (T0), results-return (T1), and for parents, one-year post-enrolment (T2). Parents completed T1 interviews.
RESULTS: 187/248 parents (mean:40.4 yrs) and 19/32 children (mean:14.

PURPOSE: Informed consent in medical care is supposed to guarantee patient autonomy. However, in practice, written consent is often inadequate for this purpose: In an effort to meet legal requirements, consent forms are often comprehensive and complex. They cover all information that could potentially be relevant, possibly overwhelming patients rather than addressing their concerns. Thus, there is an urgent need for more patient-centered consent forms. As a first step toward this goal, this study assessed the importance of various aspects of consent to genetic testing from the patients' perspe

INTRODUCTION: Effective comprehension of pathology reports requires adequate health literacy and numeracy. Deficiencies in these skills may hinder communication between patients and providers. This study aimed to assess health literacy and numeracy levels in an endocrine surgery clinic to improve thyroid cytopathology reports from the patients' perspective.
METHODS: A prospective study was conducted over 2 mo at a single institution's endocrine surgery clinic. Pre- and post-procedure surveys assessed patient comprehension of thyroid fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytopathology reports. The pre-

IMPORTANCE: In the Melanoma Genomics Managing Your Risk Study, receiving personal genomic risk testing led to improvements in some melanoma prevention and early detection behaviors.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to examine the hypothesized psychosocial mediators of the effects observed in the trial.
DESIGN: Australians of European ancestry without melanoma and aged 18-69 years were recruited via the national Medicare database and randomized to receive personal genomic risk information or usual care (N = 1025).
