Am I ready to return to work? Assisting cancer survivors to determine work readiness.

PURPOSE: A critical initial step in work re-entry involves the determination of work readiness. Cancer survivors have requested increased health care provider involvement in their work readiness decisions. However, there has been no exploration of current practices in determining work readiness, and thus no specific recommendations regarding how to assist survivors in answering the question: Am I ready to return to work? METHODS: To explore return to work following cancer and the workplace supports survivors require, we completed an exploratory qualitative study. We conducted semi-structured

Interventions to enhance return-to-work for cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Cancer patients are 1.4 times more likely to be unemployed than healthy people. Therefore it is important to provide cancer patients with programmes to support the return-to-work (RTW) process. This is an update of a Cochrane review first published in 2011. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness of interventions aimed at enhancing RTW in cancer patients compared to alternative programmes including usual care or no intervention. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL, in the Cochrane Library Issue 3, 2014), MEDLINE (January 1966

Psychosocial factors affecting employees abilities to return to work.

This literature review explored the experiences of workers with on-the-job injuries, and the effect of psychosocial factors on their abilities to return to work. Four common themes were discovered frustration, depression, discrimination, and obstacles in understanding how the workers compensation system works and in obtaining care. The literature review suggested that interventions such as rehabilitation programs and psychosocial interventions help injured workers return to work. Nursing implications, including early, comprehensive, and fair interventions, are discussed. Intervening in this ma

Return to work 10 years after severe trauma.

BACKGROUND: Severe trauma continues to pose a substantial burden on survivors, particularly in terms of long-term physical, psychological, and social functioning. While survival rates have improved, data on long-term outcomes remain limited. This study evaluates ten-year post-injury outcomes in patients with major trauma, focusing on return to work and social participation. METHODS: In this single-center, retrospective cohort study, adult patients (≥ 18 years) with an Injury Severity Score (ISS) ≥ 9 treated between 2010 and 2013 were surveyed and distributed minimally 10 years later. Patients

Nonspecific Low Back Pain and Return To Work.

Nonspecific low back pain refers to a condition without a distinct etiology to explain its associated symptoms. This pain may become chronic and is a major cause of work loss around the world. Without a specific explanation for a patient's symptoms, the family physician is charged with providing reassurance, while also guiding the patient toward a return to function, which often includes maintaining employment. Evaluating for red flag signs and symptoms helps to eliminate concerning causes of low back pain, such as malignancy, fracture, infection, and cauda equina. Prescribing physical activit

Return to work after foot and ankle injury.

A surgeon faces important issues when returning a patient to the workplace, including workers' compensation issues and the need for physician guidance. These patients deserve appropriate diagnosis and treatment protocols, and the other members of the workers compensation treatment team can help maximize the effects of careful guidance by a physician. The speediest possible return to the workplace is usually best for all concerned, the injured worker, the employer and the physician. The treatment team within the workers' compensation system assists in the facilitation and coordination of the me

Clinical issues: return to work and public safety.

Return to work after cardiac events is an especially delicate question for the clinician. The cardiologic caregiver must evaluate the full clinical picture. including symptoms and morphological and functional status, as well as address complex personal. psychological, social, economic, legal. and ethical issues. The importance of job characteristics is illustrated by the existing, albeit limited, longitudinal data showing that return to high-strain work is a significant independent predictor of mortality in young men post-myocardial infarction.

Successful return to work following a musculoskeletal injury.

Successful return to work following a musculoskeletal injury is facilitated by early intervention and rehabilitation that addresses the physical, psychosocial, and environmental factors in recovery. Job simulation and work hardening programs that involve the employee, the employer, and the health care providers are an effective approach to injured worker rehabilitation. The occupational health nurse's role can include early identification of injury, treatment coordination and follow up, matching worker abilities and restrictions to the job, and implementation of an injury prevention program. Return to work following road accidents: factors associated with late work resumption.

OBJECTIVE: To analyse factors associated with late return to work in road accident victims. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The ESPARR cohort comprises road accident victims monitored over time from initiation of hospital care. A total of 608 ESPARR cohort subjects were working at the time of their accident and answered questionnaires at 6 months and/or 1 year. For each level of overall severity of injury (Maximum - Abbreviated Injury Scale (M-AIS) 1, 2, 3 and 4-5), a time-off-work threshold was defined, beyond which the subject was deemed to be a late returner; 179 subjects were considered to be late

[Lumbosacral arthrodesis in construction workers. Return to work].

Degenerative spinal disease is the leading cause of low back pain and sciatica in the general population. It is an important cause of absenteeism and increased expenses. Its incidence increases in people subjected to tasks that overload the spine, such as construction workers. Instrumented arthrodesis is a frequent practice with satisfactory results for its resolution. To date, in our country, we haven't found statistical data on this group of work-related patients. Our objective was to evaluate laboral impact generated by instrumented lumbosacral arthrodesis in construction workers. We did a
