Laboratory and field evaluation of Korean entomopathogenic nematode isolates against the oriental beetle Exomala orientalis (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae).

The oriental beetle Exomala (Anomala) orientalis (Waterhouse) is an important pest of turfgrass in Korean golf courses, and although a few chemical insecticides are registered for insect pest control, they are not very effective against scarab larvae. There is also a growing concern in Korea about the run-off of insecticides into sensitive habitats and the potential for groundwater contamination. A safe and environmentally sound alternative is needed to conventional insecticides. We therefore evaluated six Korean entomopathogenic nematode isolates: S. carpocapsae Pocheon, S. glaseri Dongrae, S

Factors affecting the virulence of entomopathogenic nematodes to engorged female Boophilus annulatus ticks.

The laboratory trials rank the virulence of entomopathogenic nematode strains (3 heterorhabditids and 6 steinernematids) to engorged female Boophilus annulatus ticks according to 3 parameters of the infection process: the effect of exposure time on tick mortality, the quantity of nematodes that penetrate ticks, and the rate of tick mortality after the injection of 1, 2, or 3 nematodes. Exposure of the ticks to heterorhabditid strains for 6 hr resulted in >80% mortality, but only 20 or 65% mortality after exposure to most steinernematids. The quantity of nematodes recovered per tick exposed to

A new rhabditoid nematode species in Asian sciurids, distinct from Strongyloides robustus in North American sciurids.

Strongyloides callosciureus n. sp. (Nematoda: Rhabditoidea), from Asian sciurids, is described based on morphology, morphometry, and the small and large subunit (SSU/LSU) ribosomal RNA gene (rDNA) sequences. This new species was collected from Pallas's squirrels (Callosciurus erythraeus) in the central part of mainland Japan (Honshu), which were originally introduced from Taiwan some decades ago, and plantain squirrels (Callosciurus notatus) imported from Malaysia as personal pets. For comparison, Strongyloides robustus Chandler, 1942 was collected from American red squirrels (Tamiasciurus hud

Two-fold application of Bacillus cereus followed by Heterorhabditis indica to manage Holotrichia consanguinea adversely effects nematode reproduction.

Holotrichia consanguinea is a destructive pest of sugarcane in India. Out of urgent need to control the grubs, indiscriminate application of Bacillus cereus followed by Heterorhabditis indica is practiced. Based on the compatibility studies between the two bioagents, we found that B. cereus-treated grubs succumbed faster to H. indica infection suggesting synergism. Infection with H. indica even at the minimum dose of 250 IJ/grub decreased the survival to 3.7 ± 1.33 days, compared to 9.2 ± 1.93 days in untreated grubs. The Kaplan-Meier estimates depicted reduced survival time gap between treate

Rhabdias kongmongthaensis sp. n. (Nematoda: Rhabdiasidae) from Polypedates leucomystax (Amphibia: Anura: Rhacophoridae) in Thailand.

Rhabdias kongmongthaensis sp. n. is described based on specimens found in the lungs of the tree frog Polypedates leucomystax (Gravenhorst) (Amphibia: Rhacophoridae) from Kanchanaburi Province, western Thailand. The new species is similar to two North-American species, Rhabdias ranae and R. americanus, by presence of two lateral pseudolabia, each with two inner submedian protuberances. R. kongmongthaensis differs from both species by relative length and shape of the tail, and by its distribution and host specificity. Presence of lateral pseudolabia distinguishes the new species from the geograp

Overcoming chemical barriers: a new species of Rhabdias (Nematoda: Rhabdiasidae) from Dendrobates tinctorius (Anura: Dendrobatidae) in the Brazilian Amazon.

The nematode genus Rhabdias comprises over 100 species of parasitic nematodes that infect amphibians and reptiles, with a wide geographical distribution. To date, 25 species have been reported from the Neotropical region. Despite this diversity, few integrative studies, combining morphological and molecular data have been conducted to characterize species within the genus. Therefore, the main objective of the present study is to describe, through an integrative approach, a new species of Rhabdias found parasitizing the lungs of an anuran with a high concentration of skin toxins, Dendrobates ti

Description of Heterorhabditis americana n. sp. (Rhabditida, Heterorhabditidae), a new entomopathogenic nematode species isolated in North America.

BACKGROUND: Heterorhabditis are important biological control agents in agriculture. Two Heterorhabditis populations, S8 and S10, were isolated from agricultural soils in the United States of America. Molecular analyses, based on mitochondrial and nuclear genes, showed that these populations are conspecific and represent a novel species of the "Bacteriophora" clade. This species was named Heterorhabditis americana n. sp. and is described in this study. METHODS: To describe H. americana n. sp., we carried out phylogenetic reconstructions using multiple genes, characterized their morphology, con

Biological and physiological changes of Biomphalaria glabrata infected by Heterorhabditis bacteriophora.

The present study investigated for the first time the influence of exposure time (24 or 48 h) of Biomphalaria glabrata (Gastropoda: Pulmonata) to Heterorhabditis bacteriophora (Rhabditida: Heterorhabditidae), strain HP88, on some physiological and reproductive parameters of the host mollusk. Throughout the experiment, intense glycogenolysis was observed in both exposed groups, which was more accentuated in the digestive gland. This change was accompanied by a significant increase in the free glucose content in the exposed snails, indicating that H. bacteriophora infection induces the breakdown

Pelodera (syn. Rhabditis) strongyloides as a cause of dermatitis--a report of 11 dogs from Finland.

BACKGROUND: Pelodera (Rhabditis) strongyloides is a small saprophytic nematode that lives in decaying organic matter. On rare occasions, it can invade the mammalian skin, causing a pruritic, erythematous, alopecic and crusting dermatitis on skin sites that come into contact with the ground. Diagnosis of the disease is based on case history (a dog living outdoors on damp straw bedding) with characteristic skin lesions and on the demonstration of typical larvae in skin scrapings or biopsy. Pelodera (rhabditic) dermatitis cases have been reported mainly from Central European countries and the Uni

Metarhabditis amsactae: A potential biopesticide isolated from Punjab (India) with potent insecticidal activity and immunomodulatory effects against Galleria mellonella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae).

A survey was undertaken to isolate entomopathogenic nematodes from Amritsar district of Punjab, India. Out of 20 soil samples collected, two were found positive for the presence of nematodes. 18S and ITS rDNA gene sequencing revealed their identity as Metarhabditis amsactae. To assess its biocontrol potential, Galleria mellonella larvae were treated with concentrations of 20, 40, 80 and 160 IJs/L (infective juveniles/larva) and mortality was recorded from 24 h up to 96 h of nematode exposure. Distilled water without nematodes was used as an untreated control. M. amsactae showed potent larvicid

In an arms race between host and parasite, a lungworm's ability to infect a toad is determined by host susceptibility not parasite preference.

Evolutionary arms races can alter both parasite infectivity and host resistance, and it is difficult to separate the effects of these twin determinants of infection outcomes. We used a co-introduced, invasive host-parasite system (the lungworm Rhabdias pseudosphaerocephala and cane toads Rhinella marina), where rapid adaptation and dispersal have led to population differences in infection resistance. We quantified behavioural responses of parasite larvae to skin-chemical cues of toads from different invasive populations, and rates at which juvenile hosts became infected following standardized

The efficacy of entomopathogenic nematodes for controlling housefly infestations of intensive pig units.

The efficacy of the entomopathogenic nematodes Steinernema feltiae and Heterorhabditis megidis after formulation into a housefly bait was compared with a commercial bait formulation of methomyl for the control of houseflies in a U.K. pig farm. The housefly infestation was confined to the farrowing unit, which consisted of ten farrowing houses, where two adjacent houses were sequentially re-stocked with pregnant sows at weekly intervals. Shortly after re-stocking, one house was baited with one of the nematode species and the other with methomyl. Significantly fewer flies (P < 0.05) were counted

Isolation and identification of Xenorhabdus and Photorhabdus bacteria associated with entomopathogenic nematodes and their larvicidal activity against Aedes aegypti.

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti is a potential vector of West Nile, Japanese encephalitis, chikungunya, dengue and Zika viruses. Alternative control measurements of the vector are needed to overcome the problems of environmental contamination and chemical resistance. Xenorhabdus and Photorhabdus are symbionts in the intestine of entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) Steinernema spp. and Heterorhabditis spp. These bacteria are able to produce a broad range of bioactive compounds including antimicrobial, antiparasitic, cytotoxic and insecticidal compounds. The objectives of this study were to identify Xen

Diploscapter coronata infection in Thailand: report of the first case.

A 73-year-old Thai woman living in Mueang District, Saraburi Province, central Thailand presented with numerous hookworm-like nematodes, finally revealed as Diploscapter coronata, by fecal culture. The patient exhibited no significant clinical signs of the gastrointestinal or genitourinary systems, and was generally not ill as a result of this unusual infection. Less commonly, patients have presented with symptoms and signs of Diploscapter coronata infection. However, potentially serious consequences can occur where people have exposure to an environment that has been contaminated with infecte

The use of morphometric characters to discriminate populations of Heterorhabditis bacteriophora (Nematoda: Heterorhabditidae).

In a survey of entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) in the northwest of Iran, eleven isolates of Heterorhabditis bacteriophora were recovered mainly from the soil samples of apple orchards. The isolates were identified morphologically and molecularly. To unravel intraspecific variation, morphometric characters of different life stages, including hermaphrodite, female, male and infective juvenile (IJ), were evaluated to see efficiencies in discrimination of H. bacteriophora populations isolated from relatively limited geographical regions. Morphometric data were subjected to principal component an
