Sequences of Previously Unknown Rhabdoviruses Detected in Bat Samples from the Republic of the Congo.

The family Rhabdoviridae contains diverse viruses, including vector-borne and nonvector-borne viruses, some that are human pathogens, including rabies virus and also nonpathogenic viruses. Bats, which are a known reservoir of viruses with zoonotic potential including coronaviruses, also carry multiple rhabdoviruses such as but not limited to lyssaviruses. We collected samples from 193 insectivorous and frugivorous bats in the Republic of the Congo and tested them for rhabdovirus RNA. Four samples were found positive for viral RNA representing sequences of four different, not previously describ

Bat Rhabdoviruses: occurrence, detection and challenges in Africa.

Bats carry zoonotic viruses which can be harmful to humans. Zoonotic diseases have caused huge economic losses in the production and trade of animal products and recurring diseases outbreaks and global pandemics. Studies have shown that Rabies and rabies related viruses (Lyssavirus genera, family Rhabdoviridae) are spread to humans by bats. The aim of this article is to assess the global distribution of bat Rhabdoviruses, detection and challenges in Africa. Studies have shown that the prevalence of Rhabdoviruses is high in Africa and Asia. In addition to Rabies virus, other bat Rhabdoviruses w

Transmission of Spring Viraemia of Carp Virus Between Common Carp and Nile Tilapia by Cohabitation.

The purpose of the current study was to investigate the possible transmission of spring viraemia of carp virus (SVCV) between common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) through cohabitating infected fish of one species with healthy fish of the counter species. The ability of infected O. niloticus to transmit the infection to nearby C. carpio for an extended period was also evaluated. The cohabitation ratio was one SVCV-challenged fish of one species to three healthy fish of the other species. Epithelioma Papulosum Cyprini cell line was utilised for virus isolation,

Innate immune response of snakehead fish to Indian strain of snakehead rhabdovirus (SHRV-In) infection and the infectivity potential of the virus to other freshwater fishes.

A new virus known as snakehead rhabdovirus (SHRV-In) was discovered in South India in striped snakehead (Channa striata) that had hemorrhagic patches and cutaneous ulcerations. The virus is the most potentially harmful pathogen of snakehead because it could cause 100% mortality within 5 days. The goal of the current investigation was to evaluate the infectivity of rhabdovirus in freshwater fishes and to analyze the immune response in snakehead fish after challenge with SHRV-In. The infectivity study of SHRV-In against three freshwater fish such as tilapia, grass carp and loach showed that the

Structure of the nucleoprotein binding domain of Mokola virus phosphoprotein.

Mokola virus (MOKV) is a nonsegmented, negative-sense RNA virus that belongs to the Lyssavirus genus and Rhabdoviridae family. MOKV phosphoprotein P is an essential component of the replication and transcription complex and acts as a cofactor for the viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase. P recruits the viral polymerase to the nucleoprotein-bound viral RNA (N-RNA) via an interaction between its C-terminal domain and the N-RNA complex. Here we present a structure for this domain of MOKV P, obtained by expression of full-length P in Escherichia coli, which was subsequently truncated during crystall

Mechanistic investigation into the differences in growth performance and resistance to spring viremia of carp virus in common carp.

INTRODUCTION: Spring viremia of carp virus (SVCV) is a highly infectious pathogen threatening common carp (Cyprinus carpio). Hence, implementing protective measures is crucial to safeguard aquatic species and minimize economic impacts, including pharmaceuticals, vaccines, and breeding of resistant varieties. Common carp is a major aquaculture species, with breeding programs primarily focused on enhancing growth performance. However, evidence indicates that accelerated growth may compromise disease resistance, suggesting a trade-off between these traits. METHODS: We challenged two carp populat

A Novel Protein NLRP12-119aa that Prevents Rhabdovirus Replication by Disrupting the RNP Complex Formation.

The accurate assembly of the ribonucleoprotein (RNP) complex is fundamental for the replication and transcription of rhabdoviruses, which are known for their broad pathogenic impact. A novel 119-amino-acid protein, NLRP12-119aa is identified, encoded by the circular RNA circNLRP12, that effectively disrupts the formation of rhabdovirus RNP complexes through two distinct mechanisms and significantly reduces their replication. NLRP12-119aa exhibits a strong affinity for the conserved 18-nucleotide sequence at the start of the leader RNA of rhabdoviruses VSV, SCRV, and RABV, outcompeting their na

Inhibition of spring viraemia of carp virus replication in an Epithelioma papulosum cyprini cell line by RNAi.

Spring viraemia of carp virus (SVCV) is an aetiological agent of a serious disease affecting carp farms in Europe and is a member of the Rhabdoviridae family of viruses. The genome of SVCV codes for five proteins: nucleoprotein (N), phosphoprotein (P), matrix protein (M), glycoprotein (G) and RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (L). RNA-mediated interference (RNAi) by small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) is a powerful tool to inhibit gene transcription and is used to study genes important for viral replication. In previous studies regarding another member of Rhabdoviridae, siRNA inhibition of the rabies v

Rabies lyssavirus phosphoprotein possesses RNA duplex-unwinding activities.

Rabies lyssavirus (RABV) is a prototypical neurotropic virus that belongs to the Rhabdoviridae family and causes one of the most lethal zoonotic diseases. For RNA viruses, RNA-unwinding proteins such as helicases and RNA chaperones are crucial for the replication and/or correct folding of viral RNAs. Although numerous RNA viruses have been found to encode their RNA-unwinding proteins, no RNA-unwinding activity has been identified in the family Rhabdoviridae. Herein, we uncovered that RABV phosphoprotein (RABV-P) possesses both a nucleoside triphosphate (NTP)-dependent helicase-like RNA duplex-

Detection, characterization, and evolutionary inferences regarding a novel virus identified in Amblyomma dissimile Koch, 1844 (Acari: Ixodidae) from the Amazon, Pará, Brazil.

Ticks are among the primary vectors of infectious agents of medical and veterinary importance, second only to mosquitoes in the number of pathogens transmitted to humans. These arthropods are capable of transmitting a wide diversity of microorganisms, including protozoa, bacteria, and viruses. Notable among tick-borne viruses are those associated with viral encephalitis, which cause severe acute and chronic neurological infections in humans. This study aimed to characterize the RNA virome of an Amblyomma dissimile specimen collected from a Boa constrictor rescued in the municipality of Ananind

Kanyawara Virus: A Novel Rhabdovirus Infecting Newly Discovered Nycteribiid Bat Flies Infesting Previously Unknown Pteropodid Bats in Uganda.

Bats are natural reservoir hosts of highly virulent pathogens such as Marburg virus, Nipah virus, and SARS coronavirus. However, little is known about the role of bat ectoparasites in transmitting and maintaining such viruses. The intricate relationship between bats and their ectoparasites suggests that ectoparasites might serve as viral vectors, but evidence to date is scant. Bat flies, in particular, are highly specialized obligate hematophagous ectoparasites that incidentally bite humans. Using next-generation sequencing, we discovered a novel ledantevirus (mononegaviral family Rhabdovirida

Lyssaviruses.

Lyssaviruses are the etiological agents of rabies, one of the oldest viral diseases known to man and a disease that has persisted over many centuries. Together with sound diagnostic methods and efficacious vaccines--both of which had been available for many decades, an understanding of the epidemiology of the disease have enabled its control and even elimination in some specific reservoir species in North America and Western Europe. However, worldwide rabies still radiates into new host species and geographical domains and has become vastly underestimated throughout the developing world throug

Nonarboviral Equine Encephalitides.

Several viruses transmitted by biological vectors or through direct contact, air, or ingestion cause neurologic disease in equids. Of interest are viruses of the Togaviridae, Flaviviridae, Rhabdoviridae, Herpesviridae, Bornaviridae, and Bunyaviridae families. Variable degree of inflammation is present with these viruses but lack of an inflammatory response does not rule out their presence. The goal of this article is to provide an overview on pathophysiologic and clinical aspects of nonarboviral equine encephalitides, specifically on lyssaviruses (rabies) and bornaviruses (Borna disease).

Pathogen surveillance in cave-dwelling phlebotomine sand flies from Chiang Rai, northern Thailand, with the first detection of Hepatocystis.

Sand flies are important vectors of several pathogens of medical and veterinary significance, including Leishmania spp., Trypanosoma spp., Bartonella spp., and various arboviruses. Cave ecosystems provide suitable habitats for sand flies and often harbor large bat populations that serve as reservoirs for diverse microorganisms, potentially facilitating pathogen circulation within cave environments. The present study aimed to investigate the presence of sand fly-borne pathogens in cave-dwelling sand flies from three caves in Chiang Rai Province, northern Thailand. A total of 616 sand fly specim

Comparative transcriptome analysis of zebrafish (Danio rerio) brain and spleen infected with spring viremia of carp virus (SVCV).

Spring viremia of carp virus (SVCV) is the pathogen of spring viremia of carp (SVC) and often causes acute hemorrhagic symptoms in various kinds of cyprinids and induces serious environmental and economic losses. However, the molecular mechanisms of infection remain poorly understood, especially at the individual level. In this study, zebrafish was employed as the infection model to explore the pathogenesis of SVCV. 4 groups of zebrafish tissues were set and RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) technology was employed to analyze the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) after SVCV-infection. A total of 36
