Seasonal allergic rhinitis is the most well understood of the types of allergic rhinitides. The disease is characterized by sneezing, itching, rhinorrhea, and nasal congestion upon exposure to pollen allergens in susceptible individuals. These symptoms can cause considerable misery in affected patients. Recent advances in the diagnosis and treatment of this disorder as well as new insights into the pathophysiology of allergic rhinitis enable practitioners to provide more effective therapy.

BACKGROUND: Allergic rhinitis (AR) and nonallergic rhinitis (NAR) are major causes of chronic rhinitis. Knowledge about children with non-allergic rhinitis is limited.
OBJECTIVE: To study clinical characteristics differentiating NAR and AR among children with chronic rhinitis.
METHODS: This is a retrospective, descriptive study of 302 children (with ages of 14 years or less) with chronic rhinitis evaluated at the pediatric allergy clinic, Siriraj Hospital between January and December 2006. Based on the results of skin prick test (SPT), they were classified into 2 groups, i.e., AR and NAR. Th

RHINITIS IS A GLOBAL PROBLEM AND IS DEFINED AS THE PRESENCE OF AT LEAST ONE OF THE FOLLOWING: congestion, rhinorrhea, sneezing, nasal itching, and nasal obstruction. The two major classifications are allergic and nonallergic rhinitis (NAR). Allergic rhinitis occurs when an allergen is the trigger for the nasal symptoms. NAR is when obstruction and rhinorrhea occurs in relation to nonallergic, noninfectious triggers such as change in the weather, exposure to caustic odors or cigarette smoke, barometric pressure differences, etc. There is a lack of concomitant allergic disease, determined by neg

Although nasal allergy has been prominent in allergy research, ocular allergy is increasingly recognized as a distinct symptom complex that imposes its own disease burden and reduction in patients' quality of life. In the past year, knowledge of the relationships between allergic conjunctivitis and allergic rhinitis has increased. Allergic conjunctivitis is highly prevalent and has a close epidemiologic relationship with allergic rhinitis. Both conditions also exhibit similar pathophysiologic mechanisms. Pathways of communication are thought to increase the likelihood of an inflammatory reacti

BACKGROUND: In clinical practice it can be observed that some patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis (AR) continue to have symptoms even when the exposure to allergens is expected to be low or absent. We studied the clinical and cytological characteristics of these atypical forms of (AR) in a large population of patients.
METHODS: Consecutive patients with symptoms of rhinitis and with positive skin test to pollens only were interviewed for the duration of symptoms, correlation with sensitization pattern, and presence of reactivity to nonspecific stimuli. All underwent rhinoscopy and nasal

Rhinitis is characterized by nasal congestion, rhinorrhea, sneezing, and/or posterior nasal drainage. It affects a significant portion of the population and presents a large burden economically and on quality of life. Rhinitis is broadly characterized as allergic and nonallergic, of which nonallergic rhinitis may be divided into inflammatory and noninflammatory etiologies. The inflammatory causes include nonallergic rhinitis with eosinophilia, postinfectious, and rhinitis associated with nasal polyps. The noninflammatory causes include idiopathic nonallergic (vasomotor) rhinitis, medication-in

Allergic rhinitis (AR) is characterized by immune-mediated inflammation of the nasal mucosal lining. Although this chronic disease is not fatal, it is associated with many debilitating symptoms. Like many other chronic diseases, AR has a wide range of clinical aspects, and comorbidities such as asthma, rhinosinusitis, dermatitis, and conjunctivitis may accompany the disease to different degrees. These comorbidities and features determine the clinical phenotypes of AR. Different phenotypes and other characteristics of AR are discussed in this review. It is important for clinicians to be aware o

Allergic rhinitis affects millions of Americans and the numbers continue to increase. Fortunately, there exists a wide array of pharmacotherapeutic options with relatively safe side effect profiles for the management of the varying subtypes. Additionally, there are newer agents on the horizon. The efficacies of intranasal corticosteroids, antihistamines, combination topical therapy, leukotriene inhibitors, mast cell stabilizers, anticholinergics, mucolytics, decongestants, and anti-IgE are reviewed.

Allergic rhinitis affects up to 40% of children but is commonly undiagnosed. Careful assessment of nasal symptoms allows for the most appropriate therapeutic options to be chosen. Allergen avoidance is often difficult in practice. Antihistamines are of limited benefit in allergic rhinitis caused by house dust mite and other perennial allergens, where symptoms, predominantly nasal obstruction, are not histamine mediated. In contrast, symptoms triggered by pollen, such as nasal itch, rhinorrhoea and sneezing, are relieved by antihistamines. Intranasal steroids are the treatment of choice for per

Patients with chronic diseases, including chronic respiratory diseases, usually have considerably impaired sleep quality that may increase the frequency of exacerbations and severity of symptoms, lead to difficulty in patient management, and reduce quality of life (QOL). During the last few decades, several studies have shown that, in addition to the classic signs of sneezing, nasal itching, rhinorrhea, and nasal obstruction, allergic rhinitis has an important impact on the QOL of adults and children. In 2001, the ARIA (Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma) report based its new severity

Due to its high and increasing prevalence, its impact on quality of life, the association with multiple comorbidities and the considerable socio-economic burden, allergic rhinitis is a major respiratory disorder and represents a global health concern. The ARIA working group has proposed a new classification for allergic rhinitis into intermittent or persistent, based on the duration of symptoms. The severity of allergic rhinitis is graded according to the impact of the disease on the quality of life. The diagnosis of allergic rhinitis involves a thorough history and clinical examination. BACKGROUND: Allergic rhinitis is the most common chronic condition seen in the outpatient practice of medicine. Its incidence is rising in parallel with other IgE-mediated diseases, affecting 10 to 30% of adults and up to 40% of children. Half the patients with allergic rhinitis experience symptoms up to 4 months per year, whereas 20% are symptomatic more than 9 months of the year. This disease is often associated with asthma, sinusitis, and otitis media.
OBJECTIVE: To review the literature concerning the evaluation and treatment of allergic rhinitis.
DATA SOURCES: Epidemiologic, pathophysio

Rhinitis is characterised by the presence of two or more of the following symptoms: nasal blockage, sneezing, rhinorrhoea (a persistent watery mucous discharge from the nose) and nasal itching which last for an hour or more on most days. Allergy is the commonest cause of chronic symptoms. Patients with allergic rhinitis often have a clear relationship between symptoms and allergen exposure, for example, during the tree/grass pollen season. Viral or bacterial infection is the commonest acute cause of symptoms and is usually self-limiting.

Allergic diseases remains an important problem that affects people of all ages. The prevalence of allergic rhinitis amounts to 10 to 16% in Central Europe with a tendency to be on the rise. Allergic rhinitis constitutes one of the commonest causes for visits to a general practitioner. Correct diagnosis is important for optimal management. A thorough history should be taken, followed by general and endoscopic examinations and confirmatory investigations. Careful examination should reveal obvious alternative causes of symptoms, such as polyps or tumours. If allergy is suspected, this can be conf

Allergic rhinitis, a common and often debilitating disease marked by rhinorrhea, nasal congestion, nasal itching, and sneezing, is on the increase worldwide. Treatment involves allergen avoidance, pharmacotherapy, and, in selected cases, immunotherapy. This overview describes the characteristics, pathogenesis, and diagnosis of allergic rhinitis. The major contributing allergens of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis are identified. Pharmacotherapy is described within the context of treatment guidelines developed by the major asthma and allergy professional organizations. Oral H1 antihista
