Endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy in cases of dacryocystitis due to atrophic rhinitis.

Atrophic rhinitis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the nose, which is more common in India. Chronic dacryocystitis is its rare complication. The authors found four cases of chronic dacryocystitis from March 2002 to October 2003 due to atrophic rhinitis. It was diagnosed clinically by the regurgitation test and lacrimal syringing. These cases were treated conservatively for a period of six weeks to make the nasal mucosa healthier and were then subjected to endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (end-DCR) under local anaesthesia. The procedure was found to be more difficult due to bleeding and the

Chronic rhinosinusitis in ex-lepromatous leprosy patients with atrophic rhinitis.

AIM: Rhino-sinus mucosal involvement is well documented in untreated lepromatous leprosy, but less understood in ex-leprosy patients (i.e. leprosy patients who have been treated and cured) with atrophic rhinitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Rhino-sinus abnormalities were investigated in 13 ex-lepromatous leprosy patients with atrophic rhinitis, using interviews enquiring about sinonasal symptoms, nasal endoscopy, nasal swab culture and computed tomography. Endoscopic sinus surgery had been performed in three patients. The clinical course, computed tomography findings and nasal biopsy results of th

Quantitative observations on Bordetella bronchiseptica infection in atrophic rhinitis of pigs.

Clinical atrophic rhinitis in seven pig herds could not be associated with the infection rate or higher numbers of B bronchiseptica in nasal swabs when compared with unaffected herds. B bronchiseptica isolates from herds with atrophic rhinitis and receiving sulphonamide medication were resistant to sulphonamides in vitro and there was a beneficial clinical response after changing to oxytetracycline medication. In an unaffected herd three piglets naturally infected with B bronchiseptica but possessing low levels of passive antibody showed marked turbinate hypoplasia when killed at seven weeks,

Atrophic rhinitis in New Zealand white rabbits infected with Pasteurella multocida.

Atrophic rhinitis was detected in New Zealand White rabbits when upper respiratory tract disease was evaluated during a vaccine field trial for the prevention of pasteurellosis. Of 52 adult rabbits euthanatized and necropsied, 26 (50%) had evidence of turbinate atrophy. Atrophy was detected in 77% of rabbits with Pasteurella multocida infection only, 71% of rabbits with concurrent P multocida and Bordetella bronchiseptica infections, and 6% of rabbits with B bronchiseptica infection only. Grossly, turbinate atrophy was characterized by a mild to severe loss or diminution in the maxilloturbinat

Is submucosal fat injection effective in atrophic rhinitis? An experimental animal study.

Atrophic rhinitis (AR) is a disease characterized by the extensive dilatation of the nasal cavity and atrophy of the mucosa, submucosa and bone tissue. Its etiological factors are unknown. There is not a satisfying treatment yet and the treatment of the functional impairment in the atrophic cells is still subject to investigation. The objective of this study is to determine at the histopathological level the possible effects of the submucosal fat injection in an experimental model of AR. 12 albino Wistar-Hannover male rats were included in the study. AR was induced with the Pasteurella multoci

A new technique for nasal stent fabrication for atrophic rhinitis: a clinical report.

Atrophic rhinitis is a chronic nasal disease characterized by progressive atrophy of the nasal mucosa accompanied by the formation of foul-smelling thick, dry crusts in the nasal cavities. Mild conditions of atrophic rhinitis can be treated by nasal irrigations and prescription of intravenous or topical aminoglycosides. In severe conditions, surgery can close the airways. The problem can also be managed by prosthodontic measures which include the fabrication of a poly methyl methacrylate acrylic resin nasal stents. This article describes a new procedure for fabricating a clear acrylic nasal st

Progressive atrophic rhinitis in a medium-scale pig farm in Kiambu, Kenya.

Forty-two pigs in a herd of 117 displayed various clinical signs of progressive atrophic rhinitis. The main signs included sneezing, coughing, lachrymation, serous to mucopurulent nasal discharge, and nasal bleeding in 1 pig. Three pigs had lateral deviation of the snout, while 4 had brachygnathia superior with obvious deformation of the face. Four acutely affected weaner pigs appeared weak, while the 7 chronically-affected pigs appeared smaller than their apparently unaffected penmates of the same age. Treatment of the acutely affected pigs with long-acting oxytetracycline at 20 mg/kg body we

Endoscopic sinus surgery and postoperative intravenous aminoglycosides in the treatment of atrophic rhinitis.

A total of 29 atrophic rhinitis patients were treated by endoscopic sinus surgery between 1990 and 1995. After the surgery, a 7 to 10-day course of systematic aminoglycoside was administered. Two cases were excluded, due to later occurrence of nasal lymphoma in one patient and incompleteness of postoperative antibiotic therapy in the other. Among those included, atrophic rhinitis occurred in the absence of prior surgery in 24 patients, and the condition was secondary to a previous intranasal surgery in the other three patients. After a 1 to 6-year follow-up (mean: 63.4 months), seven patients

Palatal Perforation Due to Nasal Myiasis in a Patient With Atrophic Rhinitis: A Case Report.

Atrophic rhinitis (AR) is a chronic nasal disease characterized by atrophy of the nasal mucosa and turbinates. Occasionally, nasal myiasis complicates AR. This case illustrates an uncommon complication of nasal myiasis, palatal perforation. A 35-year-old South Asian woman presented with recurrent bilateral epistaxis and expulsion of maggots from the nose. She had a history of nasal obstruction, foul-smelling nasal discharge, and anosmia. On examination, the patient had atrophied nasal turbinates and later developed 2 perforations in the palate. She was offered conservative management for AR. B

Atrophic Rhinitis Secondary to an Infection of Unusual Bacteria: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Clinically, atrophic rhinitis (AR) is well recognized. We present the case of a patient diagnosed with AR. Sphingomonas paucimobilis, an uncommon bacterial pathogen, has been isolated in nasal cultures. This study discusses the microorganisms, causing AR. According to previous research, these infections have been associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Due to the limited knowledge on the disease, the diagnosis is frequently delayed. Thus, frequent monitoring and treatment are needed to avoid complications. This rare type of infection should be suspected in patients presenting with
