A systematic review to assess the anatomical correlates of the notches in acoustic rhinometry.

BACKGROUND: The graph obtained by Acoustic Rhinometry in most studies of normal adult Caucasian individuals clearly shows two notches at the beginning of the rhinogram. However, we found different opinions in the literature regarding the anatomical correlation of the anterior notches. OBJECTIVE OF REVIEW: The aim of this study was to identify and to discuss papers providing objective evidence of anatomic correlation of two anterior notches. TYPE OF REVIEW: A systematic review of the literature using a defined search strategy. Papers were included based on pre-defined criteria, which included

Effect of nasal surgery on the nasal cavity as determined by acoustic rhinometry.

Acoustic rhinometry (AR) was used to objectively measure the success of septoplasty in relieving nasal obstruction caused by septal deviation. In addition, the patients were given a questionnaire to subjectively assess symptoms of congestion, rhinorrhea, and sneezing. Patients diagnosed with a septal deviation requiring surgery to eliminate obstruction were enrolled in this study. A septal deviation often results in concomitant sinonasal or respiratory problems that require septoplasty plus other surgeries to treat the patient effectively. AR measurements for patients who underwent septoplasty

Influence of acoustic rhinometry, rhinoresistometry and endoscopic sinus surgery on voice quality.

Twenty-one patients with documented chronic paranasal sinusitis, being in need of endoscopic endonasal sinus surgery were subjected to voice analysis. Tape recordings of sustained vowels were performed both pre- and postoperatively. All voice samples were examined with a system of sound spectrographic analysis. Patients with nasal obstruction, detected by active anterior rhinomanometry were excluded from further studies. Analysis of pre- and postoperative spectograms was focused on changes in center frequency as well as on a bandwidth of the initial four formants. The variations in specific di

The effect of laser-uvulopalatopharyngoplasty on the nasal and nasopharyngeal volume measured with acoustic rhinometry.

Nasal breathing is considered as an important factor in sleep apnea and snoring, and nasal obstruction can lead to an increased respiratory resistance and to inflammatory reactions in the nasal mucosa. Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty is an effective treatment for sleep apnea and snoring. Different operation techniques with minor variations have been introduced during the last few years. Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty with laser technique (LUPPP) has made it possible to perform the operation in local anesthesia. Acoustic rhinometry is a new method for the evaluation of the nasal cavities and the nasophary

Nasal Cavity Length or Analyzed Nasal Segment of Acoustic Rhinometry in Thai Adults.

BACKGROUND: Nasal cavity length (NCL) is important for determining analyzed nasal segment (ANS) of acoustic rhinometry (AR). AR is a technique for nasal airway assessment which nasal cross-sectional areas and nasal volume (NV) are obtained. NCL or ANS is the important parameter to determine NV measured by AR. The ANS used to calculate NV in previous literatures vary from 4 to 8 cm. However, there has not been any study regarding NCL of Asians which is probably different from that of Western countries. OBJECTIVES: To measure NCL in Thai adults using nasal telescope and compared NCL between lef

Acoustic impedance rhinometry (AIR): a technique for monitoring dynamic changes in nasal congestion.

We describe a simple and inexpensive method for monitoring nasal air flow resistance using measurement of the small-signal acoustic input impedance of the nasal passage, similar to the audiological measurement of ear drum compliance with acoustic tympanometry. The method requires generation of a fixed sinusoidal volume-velocity stimulus using ear-bud speakers, and an electret microphone to monitor the resultant pressure fluctuation in the nasal passage. Both are coupled to the nose via high impedance silastic tubing and a small plastic nose insert. The acoustic impedance is monitored in real-t

Nasal histamine challenge: a reproducible model of induced congestion measured by acoustic rhinometry.

We describe the development of a clinical model of nasal congestion using a fixed dose histamine challenge in normals. The objective was to use histamine to induce a similar degree of nasal congestion as a natural common cold (from unpublished data of 250 cold sufferers) and thus establish a rapid screening system for decongestant drug effects. Sixtynine normal subjects were challenged with histamine diphosphate (300 micrograms/nostril) on 2 visits. Thirtytwo subjects were identified showing reproducible baseline values (< 15%CV (coefficient of variation)) and adequate nasal congestion (minimu

[How can hyperreactive rhinopathy be modified surgically? II: Acoustic rhinometry and anterior turbinoplasty].

By means of the acoustic reflection technique, or acoustic rhinometry, all cross-sectional areas of the upper airway can be measured by an acoustic signal. In this paper, the normal mean curve of 134 normal probands is determined. This normal curve shows the minimum cross-sectional area (I-notch) to be located at the Isthmus nasi. The second narrowest segment of the nasal cavity is located at the head of the inferior concha (C-notch). In patients with turbinate hypertrophy due to allergic or vasomotor rhinitis the minimum cross-sectional area is sited at the head of the inferior turbinate. Fur
