Mucormycoses are life-threatening infections related to fungi from the Mucorales order. Based on fungal culture, the most frequently involved genera are Rhizopus spp., Mucor spp., or Lichtheimia spp. However, since the introduction of Mucorales polymerase chain reaction (PCR), many diagnoses have been made without positive fungal culture, biasing mucormycosis epidemiology. We conducted a single-centre retrospective observational study on invasive mucormycosis cases diagnosed between April 2020 and December 2022. Cases were classified according to EORTC/MSGERC definitions, adding a 'PCR-only' c

The number of patients with haematopoietic malignancies receiving chemotherapy and stem-cell transplantation has increased the incidence of severe opportunistic infections. Systemic fungal infections are of major concern in immunocompromised patients, as these infections are often fatal. We report a case of a patient with acute myeloid leukaemia who developed multiple cutaneous plaques and necrotizing infiltrates in the lungs during chemotherapy. Using real-time PCR on a wax-embedded tissue sample, Rhizomucor pusillus was identified. We provide an overview of the literature on cutaneous mucorm

Rhizomucor pusillus is an opportunistic fungus that causes infections (mucormycosis) in patients with a predisposing disease, such as diabetes mellitus and immunodeficiency. Classic manifestations are sinus, pulmonary, and skin infections. Skin lesions consist of tender, erythematous, indurated, and necrotic plaques. The diagnosis is made by identification of the organisms by histopathological analysis of the lesion, showing nonseptate fungal hyphae in the dermis and invasion of the vessel walls, or by means of cultures. Amphotericin B and surgery are the treatments of choice.

A 7-month-old, male Magellanic penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus), housed in an outdoor exhibit, developed acute neurologic signs that progressed to death over 2 days. On gross examination, the bird had congested, edematous lungs, and cerebellar hemorrhage. Histologic examination identified granulomatous pneumonia and encephalitis, with thrombosis and eosinophilic, branching fungal hyphae that had invaded the meningeal vessel walls. Polymerase chain reaction identified the fungus in the brain as Rhizomucor pusillus, an uncommon cause of mucormycosis. This organism has previously been reported i

Twenty-three Rhizomucor isolates were characterized by random amplified polymorphic DNA-PCR (RAPD-PCR) with 10-bp oligonucleotide primers. These data were used for numerical analyses to obtain information on the intraspecific genetic polymorphism of Rhizomucor species. The genetic variability in Rhizomucor pusillus and Rhizomucor miehei isolates was found to differ; the latter revealed less intraspecific polymorphism. The different levels of genotypic diversity suggest a correlation with the different forms of mating behaviour of these species. Rhizomucor tauricus displayed amplification patte

This paper describes a case of mucormycosis combined with chlamydiosis in an African grey parrot (Psittacus erithacus erithacus). The clinical signs included diarrhoea, an unsteady gait and a twisted neck. Smears of the spleen, liver and contents of the cloaca stained strongly positive for Chlamydia species. Histologically, hyphae typical of Zygomycetes were observed invading through the walls of blood vessels of the spleen. Rhizomucor pusillus was isolated as a pure culture from the intestines, lungs and liver.

This report presents a new case of mucormycosis encountered in penguin characterized by morphological variation of hyphae and presence of sporangia with numerous sporangiospores. A 4.5-year-old Magellanic penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus) died after exhibiting anorexia, poor nutritional condition and dyspnea. Multiple nodular lesions were observed in the thoracic and abdominal regions. Histopathologically, hyphae of various sizes were seen in the lungs, air sac and nodular lesions. Myriad sporangiospores and several sporangia were observed in/around the bronchi or parabronchi. The very narrow

Zygomycosis is a relatively uncommon mycosis with a morbidity that is increasing worldwide. Cutaneous zygomycosis, one of the clinical manifestations of the disease, has also emerged in recent decades. The major reported etiologic agents in China include Rhizomucor spp., Rhizopus spp., Mucor spp., and Lichtheimia spp. (formerly Absidia spp.). This study examined 11 clinical isolates of Rhizomucor that belong to three species (R. variabilis, R. regularior, and R. chlamydosporus). They were identified by both morphological and molecular methods and were found to have a high degree of correlation

Rhizomucor pusillus, a thermophilic fungus of the order Mucorales, is a rare cause of human infection. A search of the literature has produced only seven reports describing nine cases of infection caused by this organism. Recently, over a period of 17 months, four cases of R. pusillus infection in patients with leukemia were diagnosed: a cluster of three cases in a Montreal hospital and one isolated case from Quebec City. All four cases were proven both by histopathologic examination and by culture of tissues. In three cases, pulmonary involvement was confirmed following lung surgery, and in o

Mucormycosis is a severe fungal infection with high mortality in immunocompromised patients. Although most cases occur sporadically in the community setting, there are reports of healthcare associated outbreaks of mucormycosis. We describe the investigation and clinical features of an outbreak of mucormycosis caused by Rhizomucor pusillus in a hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) unit in Brazil. Cases were screened through the hospital records, defined according to the EORTC/MSGERC criteria, and classified as HSCT unit-acquired or not. Mucormycosis incidence was monitored from two years b

A 4-year-old captive ringed seal (Pusa hispida) was treated with subcutaneous antibacterial injections for pus exuding wounds in the skin and associated blubber following a bite attack. Three months after the incident, the animal presented nystagmus and died the following day. At necropsy, there was a 25 × 18 × 25 mm well-delineated, opaque nodular mass in the lung, besides the skin ulcers and localized areas of discoloration in the blubber correlating with the bite wound and injection sites. Histopathology of the pulmonary mass demonstrated severe eosinophilic inflammatory infiltration among

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis infections are rare in immunocompetent patients, and very few cases of mucormycosis associated with aspergillosis in non-haematological patients have been reported.
CASE REPORT: A 17-year-old male, immunocompetent and without any previously known risk factors, was admitted to hospital due to a seizure episode 11 days after a motorcycle accident. He had a complicated clinical course as he had a mixed invasive fungal infection with pulmonary involvement due to Aspergillus niger and disseminated mucormycosis due to Rhizomucor pusillus (histopathological and microbiologic

We have reported a case of primary cutaneous zygomycosis in a diabetic patient receiving continuous insulin infusion pump therapy. We believe this to be the first reported case of a fungal infection associated with the use of an insulin pump. The infection itself was an unusually mild and chronic zygomycosis, possibly due to a low production rate of proteolytic enzymes by a rare opportunistic human pathogen, Rhizomucor pusillus.

Sinus-orbital zygomycosis caused by Rhizomucor pusillus in a patient with acute myelogenous leukemia is described. Identification was achieved by sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions of the rRNA gene and by expression of zygospores in mating. This report highlights the value of ITS sequencing as a diagnostic tool for the identification of R. pusillus and expands the understanding of infection types caused by this zygomycete.

The use of esterase/lipase enzymes of different origins in food industry is a widely employed strategy to enhance the formation of characteristic aromatic compounds derived from fat and diversify flavour. In the present work, we studied EstA enzyme of Enterococcus faecalis and a high purity Rhizomucor miehei lipase (Palatase). EstA was obtained recombinantly in Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3), and optimum esterase activity was detected at pH 6.75 and 40 °C. We evaluated the effect of the enzymes on milk mixtures prepared with different fat contents (2.8 and 6%) and structure (native or homogenized

Mucormycosis (zygomycosis) is an emerging fungal disease in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant (allo-HSCT) recipients. A 30-year-old woman diagnosed with acute myelomonocytic leukemia and needing allo-HSCT presented pulmonary and cerebral infection due to Rhizomucor pusillus. This fungal infection was treated with surgical treatment and posaconazole delayed-release tablets. This strategy allowed reaching high drug levels that could not be obtained with the posaconazole solution.

Matched sibling donor hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is the standard of care for severe aplastic anemia, with an overall survival of 80% to 90%. Only 60% to 70% of patients respond to treatment with immunosuppressive therapy. The main life threatening complications are infections, graft failure, and graft versus host disease. A 10-year-old patient with severe aplastic anemia underwent matched sibling donor hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, but developed sudden onset of fatal multiorgan failure on day +12. The cause of death was found only after autopsy.

Mucornycosis is a rare fungal infection most commonly occuring in patients with severe immunocompromise, diabetes, uremia or trauma. Only a few cases of non axial skeletal bone osteomyelitis have been reported. We report a case of nosocomial cellulitis and osteomyelitis complicating a posttraumatic bacterial infection, successfully treated with liposomial amphotericin B and surgical debridement. Traumatized patients with extensive tissue loss, receiving broad-spectrum antibiotics, can develop impaired immune responses and are at risk for fungal infections.
