Myocardial injury reduction and recovery under acute cardiac stress are adversely impacted by insulin resistance (IR). We previously demonstrated that Rhodiola improved cardiac anti-stress capacity in mice. Thus, this study focuses on the preventive efficacy of Rhodiola on exhaustive exercise (EE)-induced myocardial injury of IR mice. An 8-week high-fat diet (HFD) model of IR mice was established. Rhodiola was administrated by garaging. After the 8-week intervention, half of the mice performed EE to simulate acute cardiac stress, and determine myocardial injury; The remaining mice were sacrifi

Rhodiola rosea L. (RRL) possesses a wide range of pharmacological properties, including lung-protective activity, and has been utilized in folk medicine for several 100 years. However, the lung-protective mechanism remains unclear. This study investigated the possible lung-protective activity mechanism of RRL in a pulmonary fibrosis (PF) rat model. Lung fibrotic injury was induced in Sprague-Dawley rats by single intratracheal instillation of saline containing bleomycin (BLM; 5 mg/kg). The rats were administered 125, 250, or 500 mg/kg of a 95% ethanol extract of RRL for 28 days. The animals we

In the last three decades, numerous polysaccharides and polysaccharide-protein complexes have been isolated from plant or animal and used as a promising source of therapeutic agents for cancer. In this study, we prepared a homogeneous polysaccharide (RRP-ws) from Rhodiola rosea and tested its immunomodulation and anti-cancer activity in vitro and in vivo experiments using Sarcoma 180 (S-180) cells. Preliminary physicochemical analysis identified that RRP-ws was composed of Glc, Gal, Man and Rha with a relative molar ratio of 4.2:2.4:1.6:1.0, and contained 95.14% of total carbohydrate, 2.08% of

Rhodiola L. is a genus exhibiting rapid radiation and represents a typical case for studying plastid gene adaptation in species that spread from high altitudes to low altitudes. In this study, 23 samples of 18 Rhodiola species were collected from the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and five scattered alpine areas, and the plastid genomes (plastomes) of these species were sequenced, annotated, and compared between high-altitude and widely distributed groups. The plastomes of Rhodiola were found to be highly conserved in terms of gene size, content, and order but highly variable in several lineage-speci

Rhodiola crenulata root extract (RCE), a traditional Chinese medicine, has been shown to regulate glucose and lipid metabolism via the AMPK pathway in high glucose (HG) conditions. However, the effect of RCE on HG-induced endothelial dysfunction remains unclear. The present study was designed to examine the effects and mechanisms of RCE against hyperglycemic insult in endothelial cells. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were pretreated with or without RCE and then exposed to 33[Formula: see text]mM HG medium. The cell viability, nitrite production, oxidative stress markers, and v

The health supplement of Rhodiola crenulata (RC) is well known for its effective properties against hypoxia. However, the mechanisms of its anti-hypoxic action were still unclear. The objective of this work was to evaluate the molecular mechanisms of RC extract against hypoxia in a hypoxic zebrafish model through metabonomics and network pharmacology analysis. The hypoxic zebrafish model in the environment with low concentration (3%) of oxygen was constructed and used to explore the anti-hypoxic effects of RC extract, followed by detecting the changes of the metabolome in the brain through liq

Plant mitochondrial genomes are difficult to analyze because of their structural dynamism and frequent annotation errors. To address these challenges, we first constructed a high-confidence mitochondrial reference library for Rhodiola by integrating transcriptomic evidence, public sequence resources, and experimental validation. This curated resource defined 30 mitochondrial protein-coding genes (PCGs), including corrected exon-intron boundaries and validated 5'-terminal variants in ccmC, ccmFn, and nad9. Leveraging this curated dataset, we developed the RhoMitoAnnotator, which integrates thre

Rhodiola has been widely used in traditional Asian medicine. In this study, we tested the hypopigmentation effects of R. sachalinensis and its active compounds including catechin, chlorogenic acid, p-coumaric acid, and p-tyrosol. Results have shown that only p-coumaric acid inhibits melanin synthesis in B16F10 cells. However, p-coumaric acid did not inhibit tyrosinase activity when L-DOPA was used as a substrate. Instead, p-coumaric acid inhibited tyrosinase activity when L-tyrosine was used as a substrate. We further analyzed the changes of cAMP responsive element binding protein (CREB) phosp

Rhodiola rosea (Rhodiola) is grown at high altitudes and northern latitudes. It is mainly used clinically as an adaptogen, but antihypertensive effects have been reported for the extract. These have not been well investigated, so in the present study, we evaluated the effect of Rhodiola-water extract on blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) and investigated the potential mechanism(s) for this action. In conscious male SHRs, systolic blood pressure (SBP) and heart rate were recorded using the tail-cuff method. Plasma β-endorphin was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent ass

This study was carried out to investigate the protective effect of an aqueous extract from the root of Rhodiola sachalinensis (RSE) on liver injury induced by repetitive administration of carbon tetrachloride in rats. RSE was given orally to rats at doses of 50, 100 or 200 mg/kg throughout the carbon tetrachloride treatment for 28 days. In rats treated with carbon tetrachloride, the levels of hydroxyproline and malondialdehyde (MDA) in the liver, and serum enzyme activities were significantly increased. RSE treatment significantly reduced the levels of liver hydroxyproline and MDA, and serum e

Different types and ratios of surfactant, co-surfactant, and oil phase, have a greater impact on nanoemulsion preparation. The presence of surfactants in the nanoemulsion can reduce surface tension and characteristic stability. In this study, four groups of oil-in-water (O/W) nanoemulsions (NEs) with different ratios of surfactant and co-surfactant, and two oils were formulated as carriers of Rhodiola rosea. The variable optimization was investigated and then indicated as optimization group A (Opt A) with the formula of 10% of transcutol, 16.63% of tween 80, Opt B with 10% of tween 80, 29.87%
