Root Microbiome Assembly Underpins the Ecological Role of Emergent Macrophytes in a Pilot-Scale Constructed Wetland.

Constructed wetlands (CWs) depend on plant-microbe associations for pollutant transformation, yet the processes linking macrophyte identity to rhizosphere microbiome assembly remain insufficiently resolved. We compared bacterial communities associated with C. articulatus (Ca) and T. geniculata (Tg) roots with an unplanted treatment (Up) in pilot-scale CWs on the Colombian Caribbean coast. Bacterial communities were characterized by 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. Co-occurrence networks, taxon-environment correlations, and the phylogenetic bin-based null model iCAMP were used to assess commu

Associative analysis of sludge microbiota and wastewater degradation efficacy within swine farm sludge systems.

Industrial wastewater management is a significant global challenge. Sludge microbiota from swine farms may play a crucial role in enhancing wastewater treatment processes, thereby reducing water pollution from industrial activities. A deeper understanding of this complex community could lead to innovative approaches for improving wastewater treatment methods. Sludge samples were collected from the anaerobic, sedimentation, and thickening tanks of ten swine farms. The microbiota communities were analyzed using 16S rRNA full-length sequencing on the PacBio platform, with subsequent data analysis

Diversity of Betaproteobacteria revealed by novel primers suggests their role in arsenic cycling.

High arsenic concentration in groundwater is a severe environmental problem affecting human health, particularly in countries of South and South-East Asia. The Bengal Delta Plain (BDP) distributed within India and Bangladesh is a major arsenic-affected region where groundwater is the primary source of drinking water. Previous studies have indicated that members of the bacterial class Betaproteobacteria constitute a major fraction of the microbial community in many of the aquifers within this region. Bacteria belonging to this class are known to be involved in redox cycling of arsenic as well a

Ecological assembly of activated sludge microbiomes under contrasting process configurations and influent regimes.

Activated sludge microbial communities are central to pollutant removal and operational stability in petrochemical wastewater treatment plants (PWWTPs). However, in full-scale systems, the relative associations of process configuration and influent composition with microbial community organization and treatment performance remain difficult to disentangle. This study investigated four full-scale PWWTPs in Northeast China, including three oxic systems and one anoxic/oxic system receiving different proportions of petrochemical, mixed industrial, and domestic wastewater inputs. We combined 16S rRN

Nitrous oxide reductase genes (nosZ) of denitrifying microbial populations in soil and the earthworm gut are phylogenetically similar.

Earthworms emit nitrous oxide (N2O) and dinitrogen (N2). It has been hypothesized that the in situ conditions of the earthworm gut activates ingested soil denitrifiers during gut passage and leads to these in vivo emissions (M. A. Horn, A. Schramm, and H. L. Drake, Appl. Environ. Microbiol. 69:1662-1669, 2003). This hypothesis implies that the denitrifiers in the earthworm gut are not endemic to the gut but rather are regular members of the soil denitrifier population. To test this hypothesis, the denitrifier populations of gut and soil from three different sites were comparatively assessed by

Wastewater treatment plant effluent alters particle-associated bacterial assemblages in an intermittent stream.

Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) can be point-sources of nutrients, organic matter, anthropogenic contaminants, and microbes to lotic environments, and the input of WWTP effluent can alter the activity and composition of stream microbial assemblages in the benthos and water column. Within the stream benthos, fine particulate matter (FPM) supports especially high levels of microbial activity, but the effect of WWTP effluents on the microbial communities specifically associated with benthic FPM in rivers has not been studied. The present work sought to address this knowledge gap by analyzing

Dietary l-arginine supplementation ameliorates inflammatory response and alters gut microbiota composition in broiler chickens infected with Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary arginine (Arg) supplementation on the inflammatory response and gut microbiota of broiler chickens subjected to Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium. One hundred and forty 1-day-old Arbor Acres male birds were randomly assigned to a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement including diet treatment (with or without 0.3% Arg supplementation) and immunological stress (with or without S. typhimurium challenge). Samples were obtained at 7 D after infection (day 23). Results showed that S. typhimurium challenge caused histopathological and morphol

Cholest-4-en-3-one-delta 1-dehydrogenase, a flavoprotein catalyzing the second step in anoxic cholesterol metabolism.

The anoxic metabolism of cholesterol was studied in the denitrifying bacterium Sterolibacterium denitrificans, which was grown with cholesterol and nitrate. Cholest-4-en-3-one was identified before as the product of cholesterol dehydrogenase/isomerase, the first enzyme of the pathway. The postulated second enzyme, cholest-4-en-3-one-Delta(1)-dehydrogenase, was partially purified, and its N-terminal amino acid sequence and tryptic peptide sequences were determined. Based on this information, the corresponding gene was amplified and cloned and the His-tagged recombinant protein was overproduced,
