Endocarditis caused by Rhodotorula successfully treated with 5-fluorocytosine.

A 7-year-old boy suffering from aortic regurgitation and mitral stenosis and regurgitation was admitted with endocarditis caused by Rhodotorula pilimanae and was treated successfully with orally administered antifungal agent, namely 5-fluorocytosine (5-FC). A dose of 100 mg per kg body weight, divided into four equal parts, was prescribed. After a prolonged febrile period his temperature dropped to normal on the fourth day of 5-FC therapy. Review of the published reports disclosed few cases of endocarditis due to Rhodotorula spp. and this case seems to be the first treated with 5-FC. Follow-up

Meningitis due to Rhodotorula glutinis in an HIV infected patient.

Rhodotorula spp, though considered a common saprophyte, recently has been reported as causative agent of opportunistic mycoses. We present a case of meningitis in an immunocompromised human immunodeficiency virus infected patient who presented with longstanding fever. He was diagnosed as a case of chronic meningitis. Diagnosis was confirmed by cell cytology, India ink preparation, Gram staining and culture of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) sample. CSF culture grew Rhodotorula glutinis. Therapy with amphotericin B was successful in eliminating the yeast from CSF and the patient was discharged after

Rhodotorula glutinis meningitis: a case report and review of literature.

Rhodotorula is ubiquitous saprophytic yeast belonging to phylum Basidiomycota. These encapsulated basidiomycetes are being increasingly recognised as important emerging human pathogens. There are scanty reports of meningitis caused by Rhodurorula spp in HIV infected patients. We present one such case of meningitis by Rhodutorula glutinis in HIV-infected patient. The patient also had a past history of abdominal tuberculosis. The diagnosis of Rhodotorula was confirmed by Gram staining and culture of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Contamination was ruled out by repeated culturing of CSF from the

Molecular identification, biofilm formation and antifungal susceptibility of Rhodotorula spp.

Luliconazole is an imidazole antifungal agent used in topical form for the treatment of onychomycosis and dermatophytosis. In vitro activity of luliconazole against dermatophytes, Candida, black fungi, Fusarium and Aspergillus species have been investigated. Rhodotorula spp. are environmental yeasts and emerged as opportunistic pathogens among immunocompromised patients. Rhodotorula's human infections are usually resistant to treatment with antifungal drugs especially triazoles and echinocandins. The present study aimed at the molecular detection of environmental isolates of Rhodotorula spp. T

Rhodotorula infection. A systematic review of 128 cases from literature.

Rhodotorula is an emerging opportunistic pathogen, particularly in immunocompromised patients. Many cases of fungemia associated with catheters, endocarditis, peritonitis, meningitis, and endophthalmitis are infections incited by this yeast. The main purpose of this study was to review all cases of Rhodotorula infection reported in the literature and to describe risk factors, underlying conditions and outcome. From 128 cases, 79% were fungemia (103 cases), 7% eye infections (nine cases) and 5% (six cases) peritonitis associated with continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis. Eighty seven perce

Metabolic unlocking of lycopene accumulation in the oleaginous yeast Rhodotorula toruloides.

Lycopene is a high-value carotenoid with broad applications in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. The oleaginous yeast Rhodotorula toruloides naturally synthesizes mixed carotenoids but fails to accumulate lycopene, primarily due to the bifunctional activity of lycopene cyclase/phytoene synthase Car2, which efficiently converts lycopene into downstream cyclic carotenoids. Here, we engineered R. toruloides for efficient lycopene production using a combinatorial strategy that includes pathway blocking, heterologous enzyme screening, precursor enhancement, and fermentation optimiz

Effects of Rhodotorula mucilaginosa on the Immune Function and Gut Microbiota of Mice.

As a dominant species among marine yeasts, Rhodotorula benthica accounts for ~50% of all marine yeasts. Rhodotorula is rich in a variety of bioactive substances and commonly used in the production of carotenoids by microbial fermentation and is worth developing. Therefore, the present study used a strain of Rhodotorula mucilaginosa isolated from the coastal waters of the South China Sea as the target yeast to investigate its impact on the immune function and gut microbiota of mice. A total of 200 mice were randomly divided into gavage groups and control group and garaged for 30 consecutive day

Rhodotorula species peritonitis in a liver transplant recipient: a case report.

A 62-year-old man with a six months status post liver transplant due to hepatitis C infection, was admitted with ascites and pyrexia of unknown origin. Despite extensive investigations, his fever remained undiagnosed, so he was started empirically on anti tuberculous agents, ganciclovir and trimethoprim/sulfa. The liver function deteriorated and a liver biopsy showed evidence of allograft rejection for which the patient was started on systemic steroids. Later, yeast grew from the ascitic fluid, which was identified as Rhodotorula species. The draining peritoneal catheter was removed and the pa

[Fungemia caused by Rhodotorula mucilaginosa in relation to total parenteral nutrition].

BACKGROUND: Fungal infections are nowadays more common in clinical practice. The most frequently isolated fungi are Candida and Cryptococcus. Infection due to Rhodotorula mucilaginosa is very uncommon. We describe here our experience with R. mucilaginosa fungemia, with emphasis on total parenteral nutrition related episodes. METHOD: A retrospective review identified 3 patients with R. mucilaginosa, and predisposing conditions, clinical features, treatment used and outcome were analyzed. The case definition includes the repeated isolation of R. mucilaginosa in several blood-cultures and/or the

Engineering of xylose metabolic pathways in Rhodotorula toruloides for sustainable biomanufacturing.

The oleaginous yeast Rhodotorula toruloides is a promising microbial cell factory for the sustainable production of biofuels and value-added chemicals from renewable carbon sources. Unlike the conventional yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, R. toruloides can naturally metabolize xylose, the second most abundant sugar in lignocellulosic hydrolysates. However, its native xylose metabolism is inefficient, characterized by slow xylose uptake and accumulation of D-arabitol. Moreover, despite its phenotype, research on the enzymes involved in xylose metabolism has yet to reach a consensus. Therefore, t

Infection by Rhodotorula sp. in children receiving treatment for malignant diseases.

Rhodotorula sp. are commensal yeasts that may cause opportunistic infections. There have been only a few case reports of Rhodotorula fungemia in children with cancer, and in all of them the patients had a central venous catheter inserted. The authors report three nonfatal cases of fungemia by Rhodotorula in patients with post-chemotherapy neutropenia. Two of three patients required catheter removal, and a response was achieved with systemic antifungal therapy. Aggressive therapy may be required for selected high-risk patients.

Neglected Pulmonary Infection Caused by Exophiala dermatitidis Misidentified as Rhodotorula spp.

Exophiala dermatitidis is an emerging black fungus that causes pulmonary infections that may be underestimated by conventional culture methods. We encountered one case that initially appeared to be yeast and was misidentified as Rhodotorula spp. using a commercial identification kit. Thus, genetic identification and clinical background investigations were conducted on 46 strains of Rhodotorula spp. The sequences of the internal transcribed spacer and large-subunit RNA genes (D1/D2 regions) of 43 isolates, excluding two environmental isolates and one difficult-to-culture isolate, were determine

Fungal coexistence in the skin mycobiome: a study involving Malassezia, Candida, and Rhodotorula.

Evidence of fungal coexistence in humans points towards fungal adaptation to the host environment, like the skin. The human commensal Malassezia has evolved, especially residing in sebum-rich areas of the mammalian body where it can get the necessary nutrition for its survival. This fungus is primarily responsible for skin diseases like Pityriasis versicolor (PV), characterized by hypo or hyperpigmented skin discoloration and erythematous macules. In this manuscript, we report a 19-year-old healthy female who presented with a one-year history of reddish, hypopigmented, asymptomatic lesions ove

Isolation of Rhodotorula mucilaginosa from blood cultures in a tertiary care hospital.

Rhodotorula species have traditionally been considered as one of common non-virulent environmental inhabitant. They have emerged as an opportunistic pathogen, particularly in immunocompromised hosts and most infections have been associated with intravenous catheters in these patients. We review the isolates in blood cultures of Rhodotorula mucilaginosa in our Hospital. We describe the demographic and clinical features of the cases and the antifungal susceptibility profiles of the isolates. Selected patients had an isolation of R. mucilaginosa in blood cultures in our tertiary care Hospital. Al

Purification and properties of the NAD(P)H:nitrate reductase of the yeast Rhodotorula glutinis.

The assimilatory nitrate reductase from the yeast Rhodotorula glutinus has been purified 740-fold, its different catalytic activities have been characterized and some inhibitors studied. The purified enzyme (150 units per mg protein) contains a cytochrome of the b-557 type. An S20,w of 7.9 S was found by the use of sucrose density gradient centrifugation, and a Stokes radius of 7.05 nm was determined by gel filtration. From these values, a molecular weight of 230 000 was estimated for the native enzyme. The purified preparation consisted of two electrophoretically distinguishable proteins, bot
