Background: Little is known about the rate of rib fracture healing after Surgical Stabilization of Rib Fractures (SSRFs). We sought to evaluate the radiographic evidence of rib healing and hypertrophic ossification (HO) in patients after SSRFs. Methods: A single-center retrospective cohort study was conducted on all patients who had undergone SSRFs from 1 January 2010 to 31 March 2023 and had a computed tomography (CT) of the chest performed greater than 6 months after SSRFs. The rib fracture locations were mapped on the initial trauma CT scan and evaluated on the follow-up CT scan for healing

INTRODUCTION: The Rib Injury Guidelines (RIG) were developed to guide triage of traumatic rib fracture patients to home, regular floor, or intensive care unit (ICU) and standardize care. The RIG score is based on patient history, physical examination, and imaging findings. The aim of this study was to evaluate triage effectiveness and health care resources utilization following RIG implementation.
METHODS: This is a prospective analysis at a level I trauma center from October 2017 to January 2020. Adult (18 years or older) blunt trauma patients with a diagnosis of at least one rib fracture on

The operative indications for rib fracture repair have been a matter of debate. However, several reports have suggested that flail chest, pain on respiration, and chest deformity/defect are potential conditions for rib fracture repair. We describe our experience of rib fixation in a patient with severe chest deformity due to multiple rib fractures. A 70-year-old woman was admitted with right-sided multiple rib fractures (2nd to 7th) and marked chest wall deformity without flailing caused by an automobile accident. Collapse of the chest wall was observed along the middle anterior axillary line.

BACKGROUND: 10-15 % of trauma patient has chest injuries. There is a paradigm shift in the last two decades towards rib fixation from conservative management. Rib fixation results in immediate pain reduction in patients. Although rib fixation shows promising results, conservative management is still preferred.
METHODS: The study was carried out in CMH Lahore from Jan 2017 to March 2018. It was a Controlled Prospective study. Convenient sampling was used. 43 patients are included in the study. Patients with four or more fracture ribs were included. Patients followed at one, two and three month

Rib fractures resulting from blunt thoracic trauma are often associated with life-threatening complications of injury to cardiorespiratory systems. Given the risk for morbidity and mortality, the emergency clinician must be swift and thorough in diagnosing and managing these injuries. Society guidelines have been published to assist in determining best-practice approaches to pain control, imaging, and treatment. This issue reviews the recent studies and evidence for multimodal pain control, decision tools for diagnostic imaging, ventilatory support, and operative fixation. Scoring systems to d

INTRODUCTION: Rib fractures are a major problem in trauma patients, and the associated pain is not well understood. Measuring total pain experience, duration, and intensity could facilitate comparisons of treatments. This study was intended to evaluate the feasibility of quantifying pain over the course of an admission and identify factors associated with increased pain experience in adults with rib fractures.
METHODS: Patients admitted to a level I trauma center with rib fractures between 2015 and 2017 were included. Maximum pain score (verbal or nonverbal) was captured for each hospital day

Rib fracture is the most common thoracic injury, present in 10% of all traumatic injuries and almost 40% of patients who sustain severe nonpenetrating trauma. Although rib fractures can produce significant morbidity, the diagnosis of associated complications (such as pneumothorax, hemothorax, pulmonary contusion, atelectasis, flail chest, cardiovascular injury, and injuries to solid and hollow abdominal organs) may have a more significant clinical impact. When isolated, rib fractures have a relatively low morbidity and mortality, and failure to detect isolated rib fractures does not necessaril

First and second rib fractures occurred in 11 (16%) of 69 patients undergoing median sternotomy. Although 6 patients had no symptoms related to the rib fractures, 5 patients had postoperative chest, shoulder, and arm pain suggestive of angina pectoris or postpericardiotomy syndrome. The correct diagnosis of pain related to postoperative upper rib fracture may be made by direct visualization of the fracture on supine anteroposterior radiographs, elicitation of pain by palpation of the rib or motion of the upper extremity, lack of response to nitroglycerin, and negative electrocardiogram and car

Rib plating is well established for severe traumatic rib fractures, but its application in rib stress fractures (RSFs) remains poorly defined. We report the case of a Division I female collegiate rower presenting with recurrent anterior thoracic RSFs and pain refractory to conservative management. She underwent rib plating with chest wall reconstruction by a local muscle flap, with complete pain resolution reported 4 weeks postoperatively. This case suggests that for select patients, particularly those exposed to high thoracic stress loading, rib plating may represent an effective treatment st

OBJECTIVE: To study the indications, methods, and therapeutic effect of absorbable rib-connecting-pins fixation in the treatment of multiple rib fractures.
METHODS: Between March 2007 and September 2009, 40 patients with multiple rib fractures received internal fixation with absorbable rib-connecting-pins, including 8 one-side flail chest and 1 two-side flail chest. There were 32 males and 8 females with an average age of 39.8 years (range, 25-72 years). The injury was caused by traffic accident in 32 cases, falling from height in 6 cases, and blunt hitting in 2 cases. Preoperatively, imaging

OBJECTIVES: To validate a new type of rib fracture score system for treatment decisions in patients with multiple rib fractures.
METHODS: This retrospective study included patients admitted with multiple rib fractures from one clinical center between April 2017 and April 2022. Patients were divided into the conservative group and the surgical group based on their management strategy. The patients were assessed using a novel rib fracture score system based on anatomical and pathophysiological characteristics.
RESULTS: In a study of 564 patients, 290 underwent surgical treatment while 274 rece

BACKGROUND: The first 3 ribs are anatomically well-protected, shielded by the large thoracic muscles, the shoulder girdle, and the arm. A significant force is required to fracture these ribs; thus, such fractures suggest a high-energy trauma and are associated with injuries to vital organs of the thorax, such as the aorta, the heart, the lungs and the great vessels.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted over a 10-year period at a single hospital. The study assessed patients with fractures of the second rib, including their concurrent injuries and the overall severity of their trauma

BACKGROUND: Rib fractures serve as both a marker of injury severity and a guide for clinical decision making for trauma patients. Although recent studies have suggested that rib fractures are dynamic, the degree of progressive offset remains unknown. The purpose of this study was to further characterize the change that takes place in the acute trauma setting.
METHODS: A 4-year (2016-2019) retrospective assessment of adult trauma patients with rib fracture(s) admitted to a level I trauma center was performed. Initial and follow-up computed tomography scans were analyzed to determine the magnit

BACKGROUND: Patients sustaining multiple rib fractures have a significant risk of developing morbidity and mortality. More evidence is emerging that the indication of surgical stabilization of rib fractures (SSRF) should expand beyond flail chest. Nevertheless, little is known about factors associated with poor outcomes after surgical fixation. We reviewed patients with rib fractures to further explore the role of SSRF; we matched two groups by propensity score (PS).
METHOD: A comparison of patients with blunt thoracic trauma treated with SSRF between 2010 and 2020 was compared with those who

Isolated fracture of a cervical rib is a very rare entity. Cervical rib fracture due to heavy backpack usage is a new occupational hazard for students. Cervical rib fracture usually presents as a painless swelling or as thoracic outlet syndrome. We report two patients with cervical rib fractures, one of them secondary to backpack usage, and review the available literature.

Of 267 patients with multiple fractures of the ribs, 69 patients had mobile costal valves. As a rule, the presence of the floatable chest wall site, is a cause of increasing respiratory failure ending in lethal outcome in 40 to 80% of cases. Indications for combined conservative therapy and its scope are specified and efficiency of different methods of restoration the chest wall frame is evaluated. The technique of pericostal ligature fixation of the mobile costal valves to the thorax splint offered by the authors was improved. The performance of this manipulation may be essentially easier tha
