Prospects for the total eradication of rinderpest.

Rinderpest, a major economic problem of Africa and Asia, is a highly contagious viral disease of cattle and buffalo with greater than 90% mortality in susceptible herds. We have developed an effective vaccinia virus recombinant vaccine for rinderpest which protects cattle against challenge by more than 1000 times the lethal dose of the virus. The vaccine circumvents the major logistical problems of the Plowright tissue culture vaccine that occasioned previous failures to eradicate rinderpest by vaccination. The recombinant can easily be propagated and administered by scarification, using metho

Sporadic bovine meningo-encephalitis-isolation of a paramyxovirus.

Isolation of a viral agent (107) directly from brain explants of a 15-month-old heifer with symptoms of a sporadic encephalomyelitis is described. The virus shares properties with the paramyxovirus family. It grows in a variety of cell cultures from different species, and induces nuclear and cytoplasmic inclusion bodies in infected cells. Nucleocapsids measuring 17 nm in diameter were found in the nucleus and cytoplasm of these cells when studied electron microscopically, thus indicating a close relationship of the agent to the measles-distemper-rinderpest group. No infectious virus was releas

Rinderpest vaccination and the incidence and development of trypanosomosis in cattle.

An investigation was made into whether recent vaccination of cattle with tissue culture rinderpest virus would cause immunosuppression and lead to more frequent or more severe infection with trypanosomes in animals grazing in tsetse-infested areas. Herds of cattle on Galana Ranch in Kenya were divided, with approximately half of each herd being vaccinated with tissue culture rinderpest virus strain Kabete 'O', while the rest remained unvaccinated. The herds were then exposed to the risk of natural infection with trypanosomes on the ranch. Three experiments were performed during different seaso

Recent developments in the diagnosis of rinderpest and peste des petits ruminants.

Effective implementation of control measures for rinderpest and peste des petits ruminants requires that a proper and rapid diagnosis of the disease is made. Peste de petits ruminants (PPR) can be confused clinically with other infections such as pasteurellosis or contagious ecthyma. Rinderpest, in its classical form, is easy to identify clinically; however, mass vaccination in many countries and also the emergence of mild strains of the virus have made clinical diagnosis more difficult. Clinical observations for both diseases should always be confirmed by a laboratory. Diagnostic techniques u

Veterinary Vaccines and Their Importance to Animal Health and Public Health.

Veterinary vaccines have had, and continue to have, a major role in protecting animal health and public health, reducing animal suffering, enabling efficient production of food animals to feed the burgeoning human population, and greatly reducing the need for antibiotics to treat food and companion animals. Prominent examples include rabies vaccines and rinderpest vaccines. Rabies vaccines for domestic animals and wildlife have nearly eliminated human rabies in developed countries. Thanks to the Global Rinderpest Eradication Program which involves vaccination, trade restrictions, and surveilla

The Entangled History of Sadoka (Rinderpest) and Veterinary Science in Tanzania and the Wider World, 1891-1901.

Scholarship on the Tanzanian Rinderpest epizootic of the 1890s has assumed that German colonizers understood from the start that they were confronting the same disease that had afflicted Eurasia for centuries. Outward indicators of the epizootic, known locally as sadoka, especially wildlife destruction, were unknown in Europe, leading German veterinarians to doubt that the African disease was Rinderpest. Financial constraints and conflicting development agendas, especially tension between ranching and pastoralism, deterred early colonial applications of veterinary science that might have led t

Full genome sequence of peste des petits ruminants virus, a member of the Morbillivirus genus.

Peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) causes an acute febrile illness in small ruminant species, mostly sheep and goats. PPRV is a member of the Morbillivirus genus which includes measles, rinderpest (cattle plague), canine distemper, phocine distemper and the morbilliviruses found in whales, porpoises and dolphins. Full length genome sequences for these morbilliviruses are available and reverse genetic rescue systems have been developed for the viruses of terrestrial mammals, with the exception of PPRV. This paper presents the first published full length genome sequence for PPRV. The genome

Rinderpest: at war with the disease of war.

Rinderpest, the legendary cattle plague, has caused devastating losses for centuries and remains the biggest threat to sustainable livestock production in developing countries. Strenuous efforts are now being made to achieve global eradication of this viral disease, a goal made feasible through the use of attenuated live vaccines developed in the 1950s. Their use almost resulted in eradication in the 1970s but left several foci of disease from where the plague then re-emerged. Recent mass vaccination has resulted in the limitation of disease to parts of Africa, Pakistan, Afghanistan, the Middl

[Significance of paramyxovirinae protein F in physiopathology and immunity].

The Paramyxovirinae sub-family contains viruses of major importance for humans (measles and mumps viruses) and animals (Newcastle disease virus, canine distemper virus, rinderpest virus) but also zoonotic viruses (Hendra and Nipah viruses). Newcastle disease virus, a Rubulavirus, which is specific of birds, can be used as a model for understanding the pathogenicity mechanisms of Paramyxovirinae and for the study of vaccination against the diseases they cause. The F protein of pathogenic strains of Newcastle disease virus have a polybasic cleavage site (K/R-Q-K/R-R) which is specific of furine,

Peste des petits ruminants in Africa: Meta-analysis of the virus isolation in molecular epidemiology studies.

Peste des petits ruminant (PPR) is a highly contagious, infectious viral disease of small ruminant species which is caused by the peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV), the prototype member of the Morbillivirus genus in the Paramyxoviridae family. Peste des petits ruminant was first described in West Africa, where it has probably been endemic in sheep and goats since the emergence of the rinderpest pandemic and was always misdiagnosed with rinderpest in sheep and goats. Since its discovery PPR has had a major impact on sheep and goat breeders in Africa and has therefore been a key focus of r

Rinderpest.

Rinderpest, also known as cattle plague, was for centuries the most dreaded bovine plague known and one that changed the course of history and still seriously compromises trade. It can lay waste not only to farming communities but the wildlife heritage of countries also is threatened because its broad host spectrum extends across cattle, Asian buffaloes, yaks, and many other artiodactyls, both domesticated and wild, including swine. This article provides a brief history of rinderpest before describing its clinical, pathologic, epidemiologic, and diagnostic features. In dealing with control, th

A morbillivirus that caused fatal disease in horses and humans.

A morbillivirus has been isolated and added to an increasing list of emerging viral diseases. This virus caused an outbreak of fatal respiratory disease in horses and humans. Genetic analyses show it to be only distantly related to the classic morbilliviruses rinderpest, measles, and canine distemper. When seen by electron microscopy, viruses had 10- and 18-nanometer surface projections that gave them a "double-fringed" appearance. The virus induced syncytia that developed in the endothelium of blood vessels, particularly the lungs.

Ulcerative diseases of animals with an infectious etiology.

The oral lesions of five viral diseases of cattle are compared. Two of the diseases, foot-and-mouth disease and vesicular stomatitis, cause vesicles, and rinderpest, bovine virus diarrhea and malignant catarrhal fever produce sharply demarcated erosive lesions. Gross lesions of different diseases appear similar: however, histologically, there are subtle differences in the development of the lesions.

Experimental peste des petits ruminants (goat plague) in goats and sheep.

In order to study the pathomorphology and immunohistochemistry of peste des petits ruminants, four goats and two sheep were inoculated intranasally with the Malig-Yemen strain of peste des petits ruminants virus. The animals developed fever, nasal discharge, oral erosions, cough and diarrhea. One goat and one sheep died and one moribund goat was killed. Three animals survived the infection. At necropsy, erosive stomatitis, pneumonia and gastroenteritis were found. Histopathologically the pneumonocytes and epithelial cells of the ileum had eosinophilic cytoplasmic and nuclear inclusions. Vaccines produced by conventional means to control major infectious diseases of man and animals.

This chapter reviews the development of some of vaccines and their use in controlling such major diseases as diphtheria, rinderpest, Newcastle disease, smallpox, pertussis, yellow fever, rabies, etc. Park–Williams Number 8 (PW8) strain is used to make diphtherial toxoid for vaccines. As a source of toxin, it is rendered nontoxic by incubation with formalin under alkaline conditions. The product's retention of antigenicity, enabling it to induce antitoxin antibodies, makes it an excellent pediatric vaccine. Vaccine against Rinderpest Virus was developed by Koch in 1897 by administering bile fro

Viral and bacterial diseases in livestock in Mongolia.

This review focuses on the status of infectious diseases that are serious for animal health and have adverse economic effects in Mongolia. Data presented here are limited due to the lack of published or other easily available documents. Foot-and-mouth disease continues to cause substantial economic losses as exemplified by the outbreak of infection with serotype O PanAsia lineage virus. In the case of the 2001 outbreak, a 65% reduction in export revenues was recorded. In order to ascertain the free status of Mongolia from rinderpest, sero-epidemiological surveillance has been carried out since

History of measles.

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease transmitted by aerosols through human-to-human contact. It is often considered as a benign disease, although mortality remains high in developing countries (>5%). Frequent complications (diarrhea, otitis, pneumonia, encephalitis) can be observed. The disease mainly affects young children from 5 to 6 months of age with a mortality peak in the first three years of life. The Persian physician Rhazes gave the first clinical description of the disease in the 10th century, clearly differentiating it from smallpox. Measles spread worldwide from the Renaiss
