Ipsilateral-Dominant Control of Limb Movements in Rodent Posterior Parietal Cortex.

It is well known that the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) and frontal motor cortices in primates preferentially control voluntary movements of contralateral limbs. The PPC of rats has been defined based on patterns of thalamic and cortical connectivity. The anatomical characteristics of this area suggest that it may be homologous to the PPC of primates. However, its functional roles in voluntary forelimb movements have not been well understood, particularly in the lateralization of motor limb representation; that is, the limb-specific activity representations for right and left forelimb moveme

Problems associated with the control of rodents in tropical Africa.

As elsewhere in the world, rodents are responsible for very considerable economic losses in tropical Africa because of their depredations on both growing crops and stored food products. Unfortunately, few accurate data are available on the extent of these losses but there is evidence that they are considerable. The public health importance of rodents, both as reservoirs and vectors of disease in tropical Africa, is also great; plague, leptospirosis, murine typhus, and Lassa fever are among the diseases associated with rodent hosts. Scientifically based rodent control programmes have been carri

Adrenergic Control of P2Y6 Receptor-Dependent Phagocytosis in Rodent and Human Microglia.

Microglia, the resident immune cells of the central nervous system (CNS), are in constant survey of their environment. Extracellular nucleotides, released by stressed and damaged neurons, act as danger signals to microglia through various purinergic/pyrimidinergic receptors. In the CNS, the UDP receptor P2Y6 is mostly expressed in microglia, where its activation induces phagocytosis, a homeostatic function that is dysregulated in several neurodegenerative diseases and in chronic pain. Yet, modulatory mechanisms impacting P2Y6 activity remain to be identified. The microglial β2 adrenergic recep

Effect of Rodent Control Program on Incidence of Zoonotic Cutaneous Leishmaniasis, Iran.

We report the effect of a rodent control program on the incidence of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis in an endemic region of Iran. A 1-year interruption in rodent control led to 2 years of increased incidence of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis. Restarting rodent control led to a decline of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis.

A model of Leptospirosis infection in an African rodent to determine risk to humans: seasonal fluctuations and the impact of rodent control.

Human leptospirosis (Leptospira spp. infection) is a worldwide public health problem that is of greatest concern for humid tropical and subtropical regions. The magnitude of the problem in these areas is larger because of the climatic and environmental conditions the bacterium face outside their hosts but also because of the frequency of contacts between people and sources of infection. Rodents are thought to play the most important role in the transmission of human leptospirosis. We here model the dynamics of infection in an African rodent (Mastomys natalensis) that is thought to be the princ

It's Premature to Encourage Working Cats for Rodent Control on Australian Dairy Farms.

Rodents are significant agricultural pests in Australia and internationally. Recent proposals to address the Australian problems by allowing farmers to obtain desexed cats, at tax-deductible cost, to control rodents on their properties are, superficially, attractive, especially given enthusiastic endorsement from 15 dairy farmers from nine properties in Queensland and New South Wales. We argue that far stronger evidence is required to take this solution seriously, and for broader ethical and regulatory reasons, it may not be appropriate even if evidence was forthcoming. Evidence via direct pop

Spinal relay neurons for central control of autonomic pathways in a photoperiodic rodent.

Location and distribution of spinal sympathetic preganglionic neurons projecting to the superior cervical ganglion were investigated in a rodent model organism for photoperiodic regulation, the Djungarian hamster (Phodopus sungorus). Upon unilateral injection of Fluoro-Gold into the superior cervical ganglia, retrograde neuronal tracing demonstrated labeled neurons ipsilateral to the injection site. They were seen in spinal segments C8 to Th5 of which the segments Th1 to Th3 contained about 98% of the labeled cells. Neurons were found in the spinal cord predominantly in the intermediolateral n

Wartime rat control, rodent ecology, and the rise and fall of chemical rodenticides.

The story of how World War II stimulated the development of DDT, and the ensuing postwar dependence on such chemical insecticides, is well known. However, less recognition has been given to the wartime efforts to synthesize new rodenticides to fight rat-borne epidemics. Baltimore, Maryland served as the site for field tests of the powerful new compound alpha naphthyl thiourea (ANTU) from 1942-1946. This experimental campaign sparked debates over the efficacy of controlling rats via chemical warfare instead of environmental sanitation, which led to the ironic conclusion that urban rat control d

Comparative study of the control of basal acid output from rodent isolated stomachs.

1. Isolated, lumen-perfused, whole stomach preparations from mouse and immature rat produced a stable basal acid output which, although not blocked by histamine H2-, acetylcholine M- or CCKB/gastrin receptor antagonists, was almostly completely blocked by the H+/K(+)-ATPase inhibitor, omeprazole, and the metabolic inhibitor, sodium thiocyanate (NaSCN). 2. Fully-defined concentration-effect curves could be obtained on both assays with the phosphodiesterase inhibitor, isobutyl methylxanthine (IBMX) and with dibutyryl cyclic AMP. 3. On the rat stomach assay, histamine H2-receptor blockade had no

Helminthofauna Diversity in Synanthropic Rodents of the Emilia-Romagna Region (Italy): Implications for Public Health and Rodent Control.

Synanthropic rodents are species well adapted to coexisting in anthropogenically influenced environments. This coexistence raises concerns about the potential risks of pathogen's transmission due to their close proximity to human habitats. This study presents an epidemiological survey of the gastrointestinal helminth fauna in synanthropic rodents (Mus musculus, Rattus rattus, and Rattus norvegicus) from the Emilia-Romagna Region (Italy), aiming to provide updated data on the endoparasitic populations in these species. A total of 111 rodents, sampled from 2019 to 2021 during pest control progra

A strategy to improve rodent control while reducing rodenticide release into the environment.

In addition to having a negative impact on the health of people and domestic animals, rodents often cause enormous damage to the environment by disrupting natural biodiversity. The negative impacts of rodents in urban and rural areas have required intensive use of rodentcides in spite of the proven risk of secondary poisoning of non-target predators and scavengers. Continuous and intensive use of rodenticides has led to environmental pollution through their retention in the environment. Commensal rodents are predominantly managed with anticoagulant rodenticides, which are very persistent in th

Rodent control strategies and Lassa virus: some unexpected effects in Guinea, West Africa.

The Natal multimammate mouse (Mastomys natalensis) is the host of Lassa mammarenavirus, causing Lassa haemorrhagic fever in West Africa. As there is currently no operational vaccine and therapeutic drugs are limited, we explored rodent control as an alternative to prevent Lassa virus spillover in Upper Guinea, where the disease is highly endemic in rural areas. In a seven-year experiment, we distributed rodenticides for 10-30 days once a year and, in the last year, added intensive snap trapping for three months in all the houses of one village. We also captured rodents both before and after th

Adaptive control of movement for neuromuscular stimulation-assisted therapy in a rodent model.

Neuromotor therapy after spinal cord or brain injury often attempts to utilize activity-dependent plasticity to promote functional recovery. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation that activates paralyzed or paretic muscles may enhance passive assistance therapy by activating more muscle mass and enriching the sensory pattern with appropriately timed muscle spindle activation. To enable studies of activity-dependent plasticity, a rodent model for stimulation-assisted locomotor therapy was developed previously. To be effective, however, such a system must allow lengthy sessions of repetitive move

Use of ELISA to reveal rodent infections in plague surveillance and control programmes.

To assess its potential applications in plague surveillance and control programmes, an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) that captures the specific Yersinia pestis F1 antigen was used to determine the amounts of this antigen present in samples of blood and spleens from laboratory rats with acute plague, in the buboes of rats with chronic plague, and in tissues from the carcasses of rats that had died from plague. In rats with acute plague, bacteria and F1 antigen were detected in samples of blood 2-4 days after the rats had been subcutaneously inoculated with virulent Y. pestis. Althou

Developing fertility control for rodents: a framework for researchers and practitioners.

Fertility control is often heralded as a humane and effective technique for management of overabundant wildlife, including rodents. The intention is to reduce the use of lethal and inhumane methods, increase farm productivity and food security as well as reduce disease transmission, particularly of zoonoses. We developed a framework to guide researchers and stakeholders planning to assess the effectiveness of a potential contraceptive agent for a particular species. Our guidelines describe the overarching research questions which must be sequentially addressed to ensure adequate data are colle

Amylinergic control of food intake in lean and obese rodents.

Obesity develops despite a complex and seemingly well orchestrated network that controls eating, energy expenditure and ultimately body weight; many of the involved signals are derived from the gastrointestinal tract. It is assumed that this network as an entity aims at maintaining body weight and body adiposity at a relatively constant level, but the control mechanisms seem to fail at least if an individual is chronically exposed to an oversupply of food. This article summarizes recent findings about the role of amylin in the control of eating in lean and obese rodents. The article gives some

Efficacy of rodenticide baits for the control of three invasive rodent species in Hawaii.

We tested the efficacy and palatability of nine commercial rodenticide bait formulations on Polynesian rats (Rattus exulans), roof rats (R. rattus), and house mice (Mus musculus). Efficacy varied by rodenticide tested and rodent species. Generally, rodenticides were more effective against mice than for either of the rat species, and mice tended to consume more rodenticide bait than the laboratory chow alternative food. Efficacy was generally highest for the second-generation anticoagulants tested; however, this varied across products and one-first-generation rodenticide had similar effectivene
