The Normalization of Violence in Commercial Kitchens Through Food Media.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that there are 2.53 million cooks and chefs in the United States. Of those, one in four reports experiencing physical violence in the workplace-roughly 632,500 victims. While shocking, this figure fails to account for the psychological and sexual violence that also plagues commercial kitchens. Workplace harassment and bullying is not limited to the United States and has been documented in Scottish, English, Scandinavian, French, Malaysian, Korean, and Australian kitchens. Why is violence so prevalent in kitchens, and how has it become a behavioral norm?

Existential suffering at the end of life in long-term care: A critical essay on recognition, dignity, and witness.

Existential suffering is widely acknowledged in palliative care, but it remains inconsistently recognized and unevenly addressed in long-term care. This critical essay argues that the gap is not caused by clinician indifference, but by a persistent mismatch between whole-person ideals and care systems organized around measurable symptoms, risk management, task completion, and professional uncertainty. Drawing on literature on suffering, existential loneliness, dignity, spiritual care, and recent critiques of impersonal care systems, the essay identifies three interrelated shortcomings: the red

Amedeo Modigliani and his "great secret": a brief history of medical and social aspects of tuberculosis in the nineteenth and early twentieth century.

The pathography of the famous painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920) shows that he had tuberculosis and died of tubercular meningitis aged 35. The nineteenth century was characterized by numerous milestones in the history of tuberculosis. In 1853, Hermann Brehmer, first used the term tuberculosis referred to at the time as "phthisis". In 1865, Jean Antoine Villemin demonstrated the infectious etiology of the disease. This was confirmed in 1882 by Robert Koch by identifying the tubercle bacillus. Koch also invented the diagnostic tuberculin test. Charles Mantoux and Florence Seibert

Dysfunctional romantic beliefs of heterosexual women undergraduate students: the role of traditional media and social media.

This study aimed to explore dysfunctional romantic beliefs among women undergraduate students and the meanings they attribute to romantic messages received from traditional media and social media. Using a qualitative research design, twenty heterosexual undergraduate women participated in in-depth semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed using content analysis, and findings were supported with participants' direct quotations to enhance interpretive depth. The findings indicated that participants perceived both traditional and social media as influential sources of messages about romance.

"They think the sea a true medow": calenture of the brain.

Calenture's once-famous symptom of hallucinated pastures at sea, perhaps first attested in Kenelm Digby's poorly datable manuscript Loose Fantasies, entered the medical literature in a 1648 work by James Cooke (1614-1694). The eventually canonized case being sailors drowning at night for puzzling reasons, descriptions remained few and contested, not least because febrile and afebrile variants were alleged. At least three seventeenth-century authors (Henry Stubbes, John Moyle, and William Oliver) explicitly construed calenture as a distemper of the animal spirits, formalizing its preexistent ve

Male adolescent rites of passage: positive visions of multiple developmental pathways.

Unlike the separation-based, stereotyped views of boys' developmental movement into adulthood, this paper will argue that there are more modern and relational models, as well as multiple pathways, for young males to journey through such rites of passage. Indeed, it will be suggested and supported by both qualitative and quantitative data that the more classic models depend on a "boy code" of traumatic separation from mother and the feminine, a process that is not only negative rather than positive in its developmental trajectory, but also likely to create a premature traumatic separation, leav

From illness to stillness: on becoming (a) patient.

Illness is often understood as a disruption of ordinary temporality, fracturing narrative continuity, constricting horizons of possibility, and immersing sufferers in the slow, uncertain rhythms of waiting. Drawing on phenomenology, existential philosophy, pathography, and East Asian wisdom traditions, this article examines the relationship between growing ill and growing still, being a patient and developing patience. While contemporary accounts of illness have richly described experiences of temporal distortion, boredom, loss, and desynchronization, less attention has been given to the possi

Human-Animal Therapeutic Relationships: Communication, Welfare and Interpretative Asymmetry.

Human-animal therapeutic relationships are commonly evaluated through their effects on human psychological, emotional and social well-being, whereas the experiences and welfare of non-human animals remain less consistently examined. This narrative interdisciplinary review analyses such relationships through interpretative asymmetry, integrating human-animal studies, ethology, animal welfare science and biological approaches to interspecies communication. Selected cultural examples are used only as illustrative boundary narratives. Interpretative asymmetry is defined not as a statistically meas

Pleasure, prophylaxis and procreation: a qualitative analysis of intermittent contraceptive use and unintended pregnancy.

CONTEXT: Although pregnancy ambivalence is consistently associated with poorer contraceptive use, little is known about the sexual, social and emotional dynamics at work in pregnancy ambivalence. METHODS: During in-depth sexual and reproductive history interviews conducted in 2003, 36 women and men were asked about the relational and emotional circumstances surrounding each pregnancy, as well as their thoughts about conceiving a baby with both current and previous partners. An ethnographic, inductive approach was used to analyze the data. RESULTS: Half of respondents had experienced at least

Femicide is a crime of power: learning a new vocabulary.

Femicide represents an unparalleled criminal phenomenon both in Italy and worldwide, characterized by tolerance and substantial impunity rooted in a culture shared even by institutions. With Law No. 181 of 2025, Italy stands among the few European countries to have included the crime of femicide into the penal code, clearly defining the discriminatory structure of a crime too often romanticized and reduced to a private matter. Article 577-bis punishes anyone who causes the death of a woman with life imprisonment when the crime is committed as an act of hatred, discrimination, abuse, control, p

The intentional brain--a short history of neuropsychiatry.

Neuropsychiatry has had different meanings at different times in the history of clinical neuroscience. In this article, the origins of what has become today's neuropsychiatry are briefly explored, hopefully revealing a number of pioneers of the discipline, some of the names being familiar to many readers, others however being less recognized or even unknown to those who today would wish to carry the moniker of a neuropsychiatrist. It explores the rise of what I refer to as modern or today's neuropsychiatry, and empathizes a phenomenological approach to clinical understanding, and the fact that

From Subtle Control to Severe Threats: Emotional Intimate Partner Violence (EIPV) Recognition and Myth Acceptance Among Young Adults.

Prior research has been limited in examining emotional intimate partner violence (EIPV) related attitudes and cognitions. To address these research gaps, the current study aimed to build a better understanding of EIPV recognition and myth acceptance. First, we developed and investigated reliability and factor structure, including factorial invariance for sex groups, of the Emotional Intimate Partner Violence Recognition (EIPV-R) Scale and the Emotional Intimate Partner Violence Myth Acceptance (EIPV-MA) Scale. Second, we explored associations between EIPV-R and EIPV-MA scores and external crit

Rethinking ADHD as a neurointestinal syndrome: a gut-brain-parasite hypothesis.

Neurodevelopmental conditions such as Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are usually framed as brain-based disorders driven by genetics and neurotransmitter imbalance. At the same time, converging evidence implicates the gut-brain axis and intestinal immunity in shaping cognition and behavior. In this Hypothesis and Theory article, I propose that a subset of ADHD and related neurodivergent profiles can be usefully conceptualized as neurointestinal syndromes, emerging from co-evolutionary interactions between the gut microbiota, intestinal parasites, and host immunity. Drawing on d

Beyond Filipino Resilience: A Conceptual Analysis of Spiritual Survival, Religious Meaning-Making, and Post-Disaster Health.

Disaster recovery in the Philippines is narrated through resilience, yet praise for endurance may obscure grief, health needs, unequal support, and institutional responsibility. This conceptual article develops the Critical Filipino Spiritual Resilience Framework through integrative conceptual analysis, comparison with adjacent constructs, and synthesis of the Meaning-Making Model and Social-Ecological Resilience Theory. Spiritual survival is proposed as the relationally situated process through which disaster-affected persons and communities preserve, contest, or reconstruct sacred or spiritu

Hypnosis in psychotherapy, psychosomatics and medicine. A brief overview.

Aspects of hypnosis and its application in psychotherapy, psychosomatics and medicine are examined and contextualized in the 250-year history of hypnosis. Imagination as an essential element of hypnotic treatments appeared as early as 1784 as an argument rejecting the theory of animal magnetism of Franz Anton Mesmer. In somnambulism of German romanticism, another proto-form of hypnosis after 1800, concepts of the mind-body problem were dealt with, which still characterize the understanding of unconscious mental processes today. Hypnosis was at the beginning of psychoanalysis, but was not pursu

Psychosocial adaptation of siblings of autistic individuals: current evidence, controversies, and future directions.

This mini review synthesizes current evidence on the psychosocial adaptation of non-autistic siblings of autistic children, adolescents, and adults. We searched PubMed, PsycINFO, and Web of Science (January 2021-March 2026) and synthesized the retrieved literature narratively along three organizing axes: ecological level, developmental stage, and the risk-resilience continuum. Existing research shows a heterogeneous profile in which vulnerability and resilience coexist: siblings may experience loneliness, anxiety, depressive symptoms, and role strain, but may also report empathy, maturity, and

Depictions of older adults residing in nursing homes: a Goffman-inspired thematic analysis of children's picture books in a Danish context.

INTRODUCTION: Some children may witness their grandparents or great-grandparents spending their final days in a nursing home, while others have peers with older relatives living in nursing homes. Children learn about ageing through experience and exposure, where picture books can also shape their perceptions and attitudes toward older adults residing in nursing homes. AIM: To explore the underlying beliefs and attitudes about ageing and older adults residing in nursing homes depicted in children's picture books in a Danish context. METHODS: A systematic search of children's picture books was

Wendigo Psychosis and Psychiatric Perspectives of Cannibalism: A Complex Interplay of Culture, Psychology, and History.

Our review paper delves into the intricate and multifaceted realm of cannibalism, with a focused exploration of its manifestations in Wendigo psychosis. We aim to explore the implications of cannibalism within the realms of psychiatry, anthropology, psychology, and sociology by navigating the complexities of cultural beliefs, psychological underpinnings, historical contexts, and contemporary significance surrounding cannibalism. Cannibalism is deeply ingrained in the cultural and mythological heritage of Algonquian-speaking tribes; it is closely associated with the symbolic figure of the Wendi
