Short-term tissue response to potential root-end filling materials in infected root canals.

The short-term tissue responses to two potential root-end filling materials, a light-cured glass ionomer cement (Vitrebond) and a reinforced zinc oxide-eugenol cement (Kalzinol), were compared with that to amalgam using a previously devised experimental model. In 24 premolar teeth of beagle dogs (47 roots), a collection of endodontic pathogenic bacteria was first inoculated into the root canals to induce periradicular lesions. On each root, an apicoectomy was performed and root-end cavities prepared to receive fillings of each material. The teeth and surrounding jaw were removed after 2 weeks

[Antibacterial properties, biocompatibility, and clinical selection strategies of root canal filling materials for primary teeth].

Root canal treatment for primary teeth is a critical therapy aimed at eliminating infected tissue, relieving pain, and preserving the primary tooth until its natural exfoliation and replacement. The success of this treatment largely depends on the choice of root canal filling materials. In recent years, driven by advances in materials science and biomedicine, research on primary-tooth root canal filling materials has made substantial progress, including optimization of traditional materials such as zinc oxide-eugenol (ZOE) and calcium hydroxide-iodoform mixtures, as well as the development and

Evaluation of various root canal filling materials in primary molar pulpectomies: an in vivo study.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical and radiographic success of zinc oxide-eugenol (ZOE), Calcicur, Sealapex and Vitapex in primary molar pulpectomies. METHODS: 80 primary molars, showing signs of pulpal and/or periapical involvement, with no abnormal mobility, were selected from 76 children aged between 4-9 years-old, free from systemic disease. Radiographic evaluation was done to exclude teeth showing internal or pathological external root resorption and/or inadequate bone support. The selected teeth (20 in each group) were randomly treated with ZOE, Sealapex, Calcicur and Vitapex. The proced

Calcium hydroxide as a root canal filling material in primary teeth--a pilot study.

A pilot study was carried out in five mandibular primary molars using calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) Paste as root canal filling material to find out an alternative to the routinely used zinc oxide eugenol (ZnOE), which is non-resorbable and causes deflection of succedaneous teeth. The six month clinical and radiographic follow-up carried out at 2 months interval, revealed that the treated teeth with Ca(OH)2 as root canal filling material were successful, showing no pain and tenderness to percussion. A tendency for decrease in size of radiolucency was seen. Two teeth showed complete healing of th

Clinical and radiographic evaluation of pulpectomies using three root canal filling materials: an in-vivo study.

Various root canal filling materials are used to preserve a pulpally involved carious primary tooth. But there is no single material so far available to fulfill all the requirements of an ideal root canal filling material for a primary tooth. Hence this study was undertaken to evaluate clinically and radiographically the efficacy of three obturating materials - Calcium hydroxide with Iodoform (METAPEX), Zinc Oxide Eugenol with Iodoform (RC FILL) and Zinc Oxide Eugenol and Calcium hydroxide with Iodoform (ENDOFLAS) for a period of 9 months. Results show ENDOFLAS gave an overall success rate of

Effect of root canal filling material and level of surgical injury on periodontal healing in dogs.

Some divergencies in the literature about periodontal healing after surgical injury stimulated the development of this experiment. The root canals of dogs' teeth were negotiated and filled by the lateral condensation technique with two kinds of sealers: Sealapex and zinc oxide-eugenol cement. In the second session, the bone tissue was exposed and one cavity was made at the apical third of the root and another at the border between the coronal and middle thirds, both penetrating into the root canal. Six months later the animals were sacrificed and the specimens prepared for histopathologic anal

Evaluation of antimicrobial efficacy of various root canal filling materials used in primary teeth: a microbiological study.

The primary goal of endodontic treatment in primary teeth is to eliminate infection, and to retain the tooth in a functional state until their nornal exfoliation time without endangering the permanent dentition or the general health of the child. The complexity of the pulp canal system in primary teeth presents a discerning problem for chemo-mechanical preparation. One of the factors determining the success of endodontic treatment in infected primary teeth is the sealing material that should encompass among other factors a potent bactericidal effect and the capacity to resorb along with the ro

Five-year follow-up of a root canal filling material in the maxillary sinus: a case report.

This report describes the 5-year clinical and radiographic follow-up of an accidental extrusion of a root canal filling material into the maxillary sinus and emphasizes the importance of monitoring of similar cases. The most favorable prognosis is achieved by surgically removing the extruded material from the sinus. Excess zinc oxide-eugenol-based materials in the sinus might cause aspergillosis sinusitis, and this entity often needs many years to develop. In this case, endomethasone was the filling material; however, the patient refused to undergo any surgical intervention. After a follow-up

Mineral trioxide aggregate as a root canal filling material in reimplanted teeth. Microscopic analysis in monkeys.

This study analyzed mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) as a root canal filling material for the immediate reimplantation of monkey teeth. Four adult capuchin monkeys Cebus apella were used, which had their maxillary and mandibular lateral incisors on both sides extracted and reimplanted after 15 min. During the extra-alveolar period, the teeth were kept in saline solution and after reimplantation retention was performed with a stainless steel wire and composite resin for 14 days. After 7 days, the reimplanted teeth were submitted to endodontic treatment with biomechanics up to file n. 30 and irr
