Can hyperglycemia be associated with caries activity and root caries in adults?

AIMS: A previous meta-analysis showed that individuals with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) have a greater chance of developing both coronal caries and root caries than systemically healthy ones, which can be influenced by hyperglycemia per se. This study aimed to associate blood and salivary glucose levels with caries. METHODS: This research is a subset of a cross-sectional study. N = 39 individuals underwent a dental examination and salivary glucose, fasting blood glucose (FBG) and glycated hemoglobin (A1c) measurements. RESULTS: The prevalence of active coronal caries was 10.2%, and that o

The prevalence of root caries in a diabetic population.

The objective of this study was to assess the level of root caries in a population of diabetic adults. Diabetics are of special interest because they are alleged to be periodontally compromised and have atypical patterns of refined carbohydrate ingestion. Diabetic subjects were patients of the Joslin Diabetic Center in Boston and had significantly elevated blood glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin levels over at least a ten-year period. Eligible subjects had to be between the ages of 45 and 65 and have a minimum of ten teeth and three sites with recession. Data were collected on coronal caries

Neutrophil activity compromises root caries remineralization and alters caries-affected-like dentin.

OBJECTIVES: Root caries (RC) progression involves the dentin extracellular matrix (dECM) degradation by proteolytic enzymes. As neutrophil-derived enzymes have been systemically associated with ECM degradation, we hypothesized that neutrophil activity would: (i) inhibit RC remineralization; and (ii) alter the caries-affected-like dentin. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In vitro RC were created on human dentin specimens. Half each lesion was covered to keep the initial lesion (IL). The other half (final lesion; FL) was exposed to one of the following groups (n = 10): Control (buffer solution; C); Neutr

[Prevention and treatment of root surface caries].

With the acceleration of population aging in China, the incidence of root surface caries is increasing year by year. Different from coronal caries, lesions of root surface caries mostly occur on the exposed root surfaces after gingival recession in elderly patients, mainly involving cementum and dentin. Root surface caries shows specificity in the pathogenic characteristics, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. This review mainly summarizes the etiology and prevalence, pathology and clinical manifestations, classification, as well as three-level-prevention of root car

Thermal Imaging of Root Caries In Vivo.

Improved methods are needed to assess the structure and activity of lesions on root surfaces in order to improve clinical decision making. Conventional visual and tactile methods for assessing lesion activity are not reliable, and the clinician is often unable to evaluate if the lesion is progressing or has remineralized. An important marker of an arrested lesion is a highly mineralized surface zone that forms when mineral is deposited in the outer layer of the lesion. In vitro studies have shown that a mineralized surface zone influences the kinetics of water evaporation and the surface tempe

Ecological Hypothesis of Dentin and Root Caries.

Recent advances regarding the caries process indicate that ecological phenomena induced by bacterial acid production tilt the de- and remineralization balance of the dental hard tissues towards demineralization through bacterial acid-induced adaptation and selection within the microbiota - from the dynamic stability stage to the aciduric stage via the acidogenic stage [Takahashi and Nyvad, 2008]. Dentin and root caries can also be partly explained by this hypothesis; however, the fact that these tissues contain a considerable amount of organic material suggests that protein degradation is invo

Root caries in a sample of elderly persons.

With the anticipated increase in the aged adult population and the associated gingival recession, the prevalence of root caries is expected to increase. The purpose of this study was to determine the experience and distribution of root caries in a group of aged adults living in Kayelitsha. All non-institutionalized elderly black adults participating in a community geriatric programme were examined. Root caries was recorded using visual and tactile criteria and expressed as the root caries index (RCI) rate. The mean age of the subjects was 65.2 years, the mean number of teeth present was 17.3 a

Artificial caries around restorations in roots.

An artificial caries technique was used to produce caries-like lesions in the cavity walls adjacent to microfilled resin restorations with and without dentin bonding agent, and glass-ionomer cement restorations, in the roots of extracted teeth. The lesions had histological characteristics similar to those of natural lesions and to those of the lesions produced by other experimental methods. The zonal pattern of the lesions was examined by means of polarized light microscopy and microradiography, and the depth of the lesions was measured for assessment of the microleakage around the restoration

Human root caries: histopathology of arrested lesions.

The histopathology of arrested root caries lesions was examined in extracted human teeth. The main structural characteristics of arrested lesions were the completely mineralized surface area and the formation of a distinct sclerosis of the dentinal tubules. Intertubular dentin was, with the exception of the dentinal tubules, fully mineralized up to the surface. Dentinal tubules near the surface were either filled with ghosts of microorganisms or with crystals of different shapes. Sclerosis of the dentinal tubules was characterized by the presence of three different patterns of intratubular min

[Gingival recession, root caries and its prevalence].

In our study 150 referred patients were assessed for the presence of gingival recession and root caries. The mean age of the patients was 40 +/- 9 years. On average they failed 6.8 teeth. Gingival recession was present in all patients, with mean value of 55.5% denuded dental root surfaces, the most frequently expressed on buccal root surfaces. Number of denuded dental root surfaces increases with patient's age. The root caries lesion was found in 75% of patients. Patients had on average 5.7 treated and untreated caries lesions. The number of root caries lesions increases with age of the patien

Association of Root Biofilm Bacteriome with Root Caries Lesion Severity and Activity.

INTRODUCTION: This research aimed to assess the association of root biofilm bacteriome with root caries lesion severity and activity in institutionalised Colombian elderlies and was conducted to gather data on the root caries bacteriome in this population. METHODS: A bacteriome evaluation of biofilm samples from sound and carious root surfaces was performed. Root caries was categorised (ICDAS Root criteria) based on severity (sound surfaces, initial: non-cavitated, moderate/extensive combined: cavitated) and activity status (active and inactive). DNA was extracted and the V4 region of the 16S

Effect of saliva composition on experimental root caries.

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of saliva composition on caries lesion development independently of the flow rate of unstimulated whole saliva (UWS) and other caries-related variables such as lesion progression time, oral hygiene level, and fluoride exposure. We hypothesized that this could be done by developing experimental root caries under carefully controlled conditions in situ in test subjects with UWS flow rates within a narrow window of normalcy. Fifteen female and 5 male subjects (66 +/- 6 years) were selected for the study according to their UWS flow rates between 0.

Root Surface Caries - Rationale Behind Good Diagnostic Practice.

Root surfaces, which with increasing age become exposed to dental biofilms, will react to the intermittent pH fluctuations at the interface between the biofilm and the cementum/dentin surface. If dental biofilm is left undisturbed in stagnation sites in the dentition, the underlying mineral surfaces may gradually develop dental caries characterized by a subsurface loss of mineral. In root surfaces, the demineralization is accompanied by microbial invasion of the cementum and dentin resulting in a pulpo-dentinal defense reaction. Most lesions progress slowly and experimental in situ studies as
