BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic data in professional sport is becoming an increasingly valuable tool in identifying frequently occurring injuries and developing strategies to reduce their occurrence. Currently, there is a paucity of literature on the epidemiology of knee injuries in professional male rugby league players.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed medical records from a single male professional rugby league team (Newcastle Knights), competing in Australia, and evaluated knee injuries and time to return to play.
RESULTS: In total, 89 knee injuries occurred, with an injury incidence of 61

We describe the mechanisms, pattern of injuries, management and outcomes of severe injuries to the brachial plexus sustained during the play of rugby. Thirteen cases of severe injury to the brachial plexus caused by tackles in rugby had detailed clinical assessment, and operative exploration of the brachial plexus. Seventeen spinal nerves were avulsed, two were ruptured and there were traction lesions in continuity of 24 spinal nerves. The pattern of nerve lesion was related to the posture of the neck and the forequarter at the moment of impact. Early repair by nerve transfer enabled some func

BACKGROUND: Studies of rugby injuries in countries where rugby is not popular are rare. The aim of the study was to analyze the epidemiology and other characteristics of injuries in the first Croatian-Slovenian rugby league (CSRL) and the influence of anthropometric characteristics, body composition and constitution on the epidemiology of injuries.
METHODS: Eleven anthropometric measures for the assessment of anthropometric characteristics, body composition and constitution were obtained in a sample of 111 voluntarily participating rugby players from the CSRL in the middle of the season 1996/

The purpose of this study was to determine the ability of individuals with a cervical spinal cord injury to achieve and sustain a cardiorespiratory training intensity during wheelchair rugby. Nine wheelchair rugby players completed a continuous peak exercise test on a SciFit Pro I arm ergometer with stage increases each minute to determine peak heart rate and power output. Approximately one week after peak exercise testing, heart rate was recorded (every 5 s) during three regularly scheduled rugby training sessions. Data were analysed to determine the number of continuous minutes that particip

OBJECTIVES: We used objective assessment tools to detect subtle neurological deficits that accompany repetitive and mild head impacts in contact sport across a season.
METHODS: Female participants (n=13, 21±1.8 years old; 167.6±6.7 cm; 72.8±6.1 kg) completed assessments pre and post the varsity rugby season. A commercial balance board was used to assess static balance and response to dynamic postural challenge. Spinal cord excitability via the soleus H-reflex was assessed in both legs. Video analysis was used to identify head impact exposures.
RESULTS: A total of 172 potential concussive eve

The Rugby Injury and Performance Project (RIPP) is a prospective cohort study by a multidisciplinary research group. Rugby injuries constitute an important area for research because rugby union is New Zealand's national sport and because of the considerable cost of all sports injury acknowledged by the Accident Rehabilitation and Compensation Insurance Corporation (ACC). The initial phase of data collection in the RIPP involved a pre-season questionnaire which, among other things, sought to establish variables relating to the past injury experience of players. The influence of previous injury,

OBJECTIVES: Primary prevention of concussions is a priority in contact sports, with growing interest in the role of neck strength in mitigating the risks of concussion. The aim of this study was to determine if neck function was associated with in-season concussions in adolescent rugby union and league athletes, and to establish clinical values to identify players with increased risk of sustaining a concussion.
DESIGN: Prospective cohort study.
METHODS: Assessment of neck function included isometric strength, endurance and proprioception. In-season concussion injuries were recorded. Prelimin

Rugby is played by more than 3 million people in over 100 countries on 5 continents. Playing rugby can result in 2-3 times more dental and facial trauma than American football or other contact sports. Facial trauma in sports has been associated with the development of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). This study aimed to determine the prevalence of TMDs in rugby players. The Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders were used to assess 30 rugby players (group 1) and 28 nonathletes (group 2) for TMDs. The chi-square test was used to compare the groups, and a significance le

A 20-year-old female rugby player was injured when an opponent landed on her leg during a match. Twelve days after injury, the team's certified athletic trainer referred the patient to a physical therapist due to continued pain. Following fluoroscopic imaging, which was utilized by the physical therapist because standard radiographs were unavailable in close proximity, she was referred for radiographs, which demonstrated a midfibular diaphyseal fracture. J Orthop Sports Phys Ther 2016;46(7):608. doi:10.2519/jospt.2016.0411.

Exercise-associated muscle cramps (EAMC) in the calf are common in rugby league. To date, the etiology and predictors of calf cramping are poorly understood. The aim of this study was to undertake a prospective investigation to identify predictors of calf cramping in rugby league players. Demographic and anthropometric data and calf cramp and injury history were collected in the preseason. Hydration status, number of games played, and calf cramps were recorded on game days. Male rugby league players (n = 103, mean age 18.8 ± 4.1 years) were classified as either EAMC (experienced at least 1 inc

Rugby is a popular contact sport worldwide. Collisions and tackles during matches and practices often lead to traumatic injuries of the shoulder. This review reports on the epidemiology of injuries, type of lesions and treatment of shoulder injuries, risk factors, such as player position, and return to sport activities. Electronic searches through PubMed (Medline), EMBASE, and Cochrane Library retrieved studies concerning shoulder injuries in rugby players. Data regarding incidence, type and mechanisms of lesion, risk factors and return to sport were extracted and analyzed. The main reported d

Rugby is a high-impact collision sport, with impact forces. Shoulder injuries are common and result in the longest time off sport for any joint injury in rugby. The most common injuries are to the glenohumeral joint with varying degrees of instability. The degree of instability can guide management. The three main types of instability presentations are: (1) frank dislocation, (2) subluxations and (3) subclinical instability with pain and clicking. Understanding the exact mechanism of injury can guide diagnosis with classical patterns of structural injuries. The standard clinical examination in

OBJECTIVES: To measure the frequency and nature of injuries occurring in competitive matches since professionalism was introduced in rugby union.
METHODS: The cohort study previously conducted in players from senior rugby clubs in the Scottish Borders in 1993-1994 when rugby union was an entirely amateur sport was repeated in 1997-1998. The same injury definition, outcome criteria, and method of calculating playing hours were used. In total, 803 (84%) of 960 eligible players participated, including all 30 adult players who played professionally for the Scottish Rugby Union or Border Reivers D

In 1984 JR Silver reported on 63 patients who had sustained serious injuries of their cervical spine as a result of games of rugby between the years 1952 and 1982. In this paper his results have been brought up to date. A further 19 players who were treated personally are reported, sustaining their injuries between 1983 and 1987. The mechanism of injury was still blows to the head or the head being driven into the ground. Seven injuries occurred in the scrums all were front row forwards. One was injured when the players charged, two players were inexperienced and the other cases all followed a

123 cases of maxillo-facial injuries due to rugby and treated in the Department of Maxillo-Facial Surgery at the University Teachers Hospital (C.H.U.) of Bordeaux between 1981 and 1984 are analyzed. The high rate of injuries decreases considerably if accidents caused by intentional brutality are excluded. This then approaches the rate for other team sports. Rugby is not basically a violent sport but can be made so by the unfairness of certain players. It would be most advisable to educate players along these lines.
