Small ruminant dairy production varies significantly from bovine production in physiology, milk composition, production scale, processing of products, and availability of labeled mastitis treatments, all of which may impact therapeutic decision-making. Extra-label drug use considerations, including extended withdrawal interval recommendations, must be kept in mind, and practitioners should utilize Food Animal Residue Avoidance Databank to provide recommendations to producers. Milk quality evaluation tools such as Dairy Herd Improvement testing, California Mastitis Test, and milk culture can he

In comparison to many other mammalian species, ruminant ungulates have a unique form of placentation. Ruminants initially display an epitheliochorial type of placentation; however, during the period of placental attachment, trophoblast giant binucleate cells (BNC) develop within the chorion to migrate and fuse with the uterine surface epithelium to form syncytial plaques. Binucleate cell migration and fusion continues throughout pregnancy but never appears to breach the basal lamina, beneath the uterine surface or luminal epithelium. Therefore, the semi-invasive type of placentation in ruminan

Sheep and goats are commonly infected with three Cryptosporidium species, including Cryptosporidium parvum, Cryptosporidium ubiquitum, and Cryptosporidium xiaoi, which differ from each in prevalence, geographic distribution, and public health importance. While C. parvum appears to be a dominant species in small ruminants in European countries, its occurrence in most African, Asian, and American countries appear to be limited. As a result, zoonotic infections due to contact with lambs and goat kids are common in European countries, leading to frequent reports of outbreaks of cryptosporidiosis o

Zoonoses are infections that spread naturally between species (sometimes by a vector) from animals to other animal species or to humans or from humans to animals. Most of the zoonoses diagnosed in sheep and goats are transmitted by close contact of man with these animals and are, more often, occupational diseases that principally affect breeders, veterinarians and/or slaughterhouse workers. Some other diseases have an airborne transmission and affect the population in the vicinity of sheep/goat farms. Due to the fact that small ruminants are almost the only remaining animals which are migratin

In the current study, mycotoxicoses of ruminants and horses are reviewed, with an emphasis on the occurrence of these diseases in South America. The main mycotoxicoses observed in grazing cattle include intoxications by indole-diterpenoid mycotoxins (Paspalum spp. contaminated by Claviceps paspali, Lolium perenne infected by Neotyphodium lolii, Cynodon dactylon infected by Claviceps cynodontis, and Poa huecu), gangrenous ergotism and dysthermic syndrome (hyperthermia) caused by Festuca arundinacea (syn. Festuca elatior) infected by Neotyphodium coenophialum (syn. Acremonium coenophialum), and

The physiological response to infections and injuries involves local inflammation and the initiation of events leading to a systemic response, also called acute phase reaction (APR). This multiplicity of changes is distant from the site of injury, and includes fever, leukocytosis and quantitative and qualitative modification of a group of non-structurally related proteins present in blood and other biological fluids, collectively named Acute Phase Proteins (APP). Proteomic investigations of serum or plasma following natural or experimental infection frequently reveal substantial alterations in

Although they differ considerably with respect to their biology, both Giardia duodenalis and Cryptosporidium parvum are common in ruminants, whereas Cryptosporidium andersoni is not. G. duodenalis infections are acquired during the first few months of life, tend to be chronic, and may be a production-limiting disease of ruminants. C. parvum infections remain an important cause of diarrhea in neonatal ruminants. Abomasal cryptosporidiosis, caused by C. andersoni, is an emerging disease of cattle that may affect both beef and dairy herds. This article reviews the life cycles, production impacts,

Caseous lymphadenitis is a contagious bacterial disease that affects sheep and goats. It is characterized by abscess formation in the skin, internal and external lymph nodes, and internal organs. The causative agent is Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis. The disease can become endemic in a herd or flock and is difficult to eradicate by virtue of its poor response to therapeutics, its ability to persist in the environment, and the limitations in detecting subclinically affected animals. The disease causes significant economic impact on the small ruminant industry through decreased meat yield, d

Parturition is a process which, when set into motion, occurs to completion. This review concerns the control of parturition in ruminants. Parturition is an endocrine event, dependent upon the activation of the fetal hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. In sheep and other ruminants, increases in plasma concentrations of cortisol induce the activity of 17-hydroxylase and 17,20 lyase in the placenta, increasing the biosynthesis of oestrogen relative to progesterone. The increase in the so-called E:P ratio increases myometrial activity and culminates in labour and delivery. Much work has bee

Anemia is a clinically important syndrome in small ruminants. Anemia can be divided into regenerative and nonregenerative forms. Differentials for regenerative anemia include hemorrhage owing to gastrointestinal or external parasitism or hemostatic disorders, and hemolysis owing to infectious, osmotic, toxic, and nutritional causes. Differentials for nonregenerative anemia include inflammatory and chronic diseases, renal failure, pancytopenia, copper deficiency, and heavy metal toxicosis. Iron deficiency anemia can be caused by chronic gastrointestinal and external hemorrhage or nutritional de

Cryptosporidium and Giardia are ubiquitous protozoan parasites that infect a broad range of vertebrate hosts, including domestic and wild animals as well as humans. Both parasites are of medical and veterinary importance. Infections with Cryptosporidium and Giardia in ruminants are associated with diarrhea outbreaks, mainly in young animals. Ruminants are potential sources of infection for humans because some species of Cryptosporidium and assemblages of Giardia duodenalis have been isolated from both ruminants and humans. Knowledge of these parasites has greatly expanded in the last 2 decades

Peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) causes a severe contagious disease of sheep and goats and has spread extensively through the developing world. Because of its disproportionately large impact on the livelihoods of low-income livestock keepers, and the availability of effective vaccines and good diagnostics, the virus is being targeted for global control and eventual eradication. In this review we examine the origin of the virus and its current distribution, and the factors that have led international organizations to conclude that it is eradicable. We also review recent progress in the m

Ectoparasites are a common problem in small ruminants of North America. Management of ectoparasites in small ruminants can be challenging for producers and veterinarians. It is important for the veterinarian to make an accurate diagnosis of the type of ectoparasite that is infesting the animal, then to develop a plan that most effectively and economically controls the ectoparasite. Effective and economic control of an ectoparasite infestation begins with an understanding of the ectoparasite's life cycle and how that life cycle affects the animal. It should be noted that climate and geographica

Chlamydophila abortus (formerly Chlamydia psittaci) is one of the most important causes of reproductive failure in sheep and goats, especially in intensively managed flocks. The disease is usually manifested as abortion in the last 2 to 3 weeks of gestation, regardless of when the animal was infected. Ewes that abort are resistant to future reproductive failure due to C. abortus, but they become inapparent carriers and persistently shed the organism from their reproductive tracts during estrus. Chlamydophila pecorum is the other member of the genus that affects small ruminants, and it is recog

Various serological techniques including immunoprecipitation, indirect haemagglutination and the indirect fluorescence antibody test have been successfully applied for the detection of fasciolosis, mainly in experimental infections. Recently, the most frequently used assay is the ELISA technique with somatic or excretory-secretory antigens obtained from adult flukes. Further purification of such antigens has considerably increased both the sensitivity and specificity of the system. However, most data indicate that serodiagnosis is reliable in groups of naturally-infected cattle and sheep but c
