BACKGROUND: Registered nurses are primary care providers during most patient transfers from rural areas. Various local conditions and circumstances impact the provision of nursing care prior to and during transportation. These include clinic staffing, uneven access to functioning equipment and other necessary infrastructure across settings, the wide-ranging clinical need for specialty care, and complex social and interpersonal circumstances that play a role in care-seeking and transport decision-making. This study explored the experiences of nurses with emergency patient transport in rural hea

BACKGROUND: Globally, an estimated 40.8 million people were living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) in 2024, with approximately 8.15 million reported in South Africa by 2025. Pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) remains a prevalent opportunistic infection among people living with HIV. There is a paucity of research on the experiences of professional nurses in managing HIV and PTB co-infection.
AIM: This study aimed to explore and describe the experiences of professional nurses in managing newly diagnosed patients living with HIV and PTB co-infection in the rural primary health care (PHC) clini

Educational strategies that allow students to experience patient care in both rural and urban settings are imperative to the recruitment and retention of nurses for medically underserved populations or health professional shortage areas. Two state schools of nursing (one urban-oriented and one rural-oriented) in the Mid-Atlantic region were awarded Health Resources and Service Administration (HRSA) project funding to educate nursing students and registered nurses in community-based primary care settings. This article will discuss an innovative rural-urban baccalaureate nursing student exchange

BACKGROUND: Burnout and anxiety compromise physical and mental well-being of nurses and jeopardize patient safety. Personal, professional, and workplace characteristics have been associated with burnout and anxiety across diverse practice settings, yet none in rural, community trauma centers. We sought to identify the severity and predictors of burnout and anxiety in the trauma nursing staff of a rural Level I trauma center.
METHODS: A convenience sample of trauma nurses from the emergency department (ED), intensive care unit (ICU), and trauma ward was voluntarily surveyed using a demographic

Honoring individual preferences, like going outside, can enhance the health of nursing home (NH) residents living with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD). Although a hallmark of person-centered care, honoring ADRD residents' preferences is often restricted when they are perceived to be high-risk for harm by NH staff. Accessible and efficient strategies are needed to help NH staff balance harmful risks to health and safety against the residents' right to make autonomous choices, especially in under-resourced rural areas. This pilot study (NCT05618678) evaluated the feasibility of

Chronic pain, mainly associated with musculoskeletal diagnoses, is inadequately and often inappropriately treated in nursing home residents. The purpose of this descriptive study is to identify the musculoskeletal diagnoses associated with pain and to compare pain management of a sample of nursing home residents with the 1998 evidence-based guideline proposed by the American Geriatrics Society (AGS). The sample consists of 215 residents from 13 rural Iowa nursing home homes. The residents answered a series of face-to-face questions that addressed the presence/absence of pain and completed the

BACKGROUND: Frailty is a multidimensional condition with symptoms relating to falls, immobility, incontinence, impaired memory and medication side-effects. With increasing numbers of frailty, particularly in rural areas, healthcare systems are being challenged globally. Moreover, frailty may be more common in rural communities as a consequence of transportation issues, limited access to healthcare services and health promotion activities. Advanced Nurse Practitioners are ideally placed to undertake comprehensive geriatric assessments and identify frailly syndromes.
AIMS: Explore the function

PURPOSE: Diabetic foot ulcers afflict a quarter of type-2 diabetes mellitus patients and are associated with higher mortality rates among people with diabetes. Routine primary and preventive care is essential to both prevent and treat foot ulcers before they can contribute to further adverse outcomes. One approach for expanding this care to people with diabetes in rural communities is increasing the practice authority of nurse practitioners. This study examines whether the presence of nurse practitioner practice authority is associated with fewer foot ulcer complications in rural populations a

CONTEXT: A 3-year pilot program to expand the role of nurse practitioners (NPs) in the Washington State workers' compensation system was implemented in 2004 (SHB 1691), amid concern about disparities in access to health care for injured workers in rural areas. SHB 1691 authorized NPs to independently perform most functions of an attending physician.
PURPOSE: The aims of this study were to (1) describe the contribution by NPs to Washington's workers' compensation provider workforce, (2) evaluate change in provider availability attributable to SHB 1691, and (3) evaluate the effect of SHB 1691 o

AIM: To assess mental health literacy and its association with professional variables among community health center (CHC) nurses.
BACKGROUND: Mental health problems are highly prevalent in post-conflict countries, but access to treatment is acutely limited. The integration of mental health care into primary healthcare (PHC) is one of the key recommended strategies to scale up access to treatment. However, little is known about PHC nurses' mental health literacy (MHL).
METHOD: Seventy-four nurses (46 women, 28 men) were recruited from 13 CHCs in the western province of Rwanda. Participants an

Clinical outcomes in patients with chronic heart failure (HF) remain suboptimal, even in the contemporary era of guideline-directed medical therapy. HF nursing clinics may offer additional benefits by enhancing self-management and improving quality of life in this population. We retrospectively analyzed prospectively collected clinical data regarding a monthly HF nursing clinic conducted between April 2023 and March 2025. The clinic was operated by certified HF nurses and certified HF educators, who consistently followed patients with chronic HF following discharge from an index HF hospitalizat

BACKGROUND: There is a shortage of primary and mental health care providers in rural U.S. communities, contributing to poor health outcomes among rural populations. We developed a Regional Delivery Model as part of a Doctor of Nursing practice (DNP) program to address this shortage.
METHOD: Annual surveys for rural students included a Likert-type scale and open-ended questions. We tracked enrollment, dropout and graduation rates, and employment data. Descriptive statistics were calculated for all survey responses. Qualitative descriptive analysis was conducted for open-ended responses.

BACKGROUND: There are persistent gaps in access to sexual assault nurse examiners (SANEs) in rural and underserved areas, yielding health and legal disparities for survivors. These inequities prompted federal investment in novel telehealth programs to improve SANE access.
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to examine program case studies from two sexual abuse/assault (SA) telehealth centers, illuminating successes, challenges, and lessons learned.
METHODS: Two state SA telehealth program directors used a collective instrumental case study approach to understand telehealth SANE (teleSANE) pro

Increased numbers of primary care and advanced practice nurses with unique generalist skills will be required to meet the accelerating physiologic and sociocultural health care needs of rural populations. Several factors have been identified that will influence the demands and position of community-based nurses in rural practice settings during the next decade. A back-to-basics type of health care offered out of a growing elderly population; technological breakthroughs that make it possible for more chronically ill patients to live at home; serious substance abuse and other adolescent problems

Although mental illness among elderly living in nursing homes is a substantial and growing concern, the behavioral problems associated with mental illness or threats to mental health are not well understood, tolerated, or effectively managed by nursing home staff. As a result, resident care and quality of life, and staff morale often suffer. The need for geriatric mental health training in long-term care settings has become increasingly apparent. Psychiatric/mental health nurses are in an advantageous position to address this current need and future challenge through the development, implement
