The S100B protein, known for its role in the central and enteric nervous systems, has recently been identified in dietary sources such as milk, dairy products, fruits, and vegetables. Given its potential interaction with the gut microbiota, this study explores the relationship between dietary intake of S100B and microbiota biodiversity across different diets. A comprehensive study was conducted, estimating S100B concentrations in 13 dietary patterns recommended in different countries. This is the first study to provide a comparative estimation of S100B exposure from the diet and to explore its

The aim of this study was to investigate the temporal variations of S100β in the hippocampus, cerebellum and cerebral cortex of neonatal rats (Wistar strain) under anoxic conditions. Real-time PCR and western blotting techniques were used for gene expression and protein analysis. Animals were divided into two groups, a control group and an anoxic group, and further separated at different time points for analysis. After anoxia, S100β gene expression showed a significant peak in the hippocampus and cerebellum after 2 h, followed by a decline compared to the control group at other time points. Th

S100B is a calcium-binding protein mainly expressed by astrocytes, but also localized in other definite neural and extra-neural cell types. While its presence in biological fluids is widely recognized as a reliable biomarker of active injury, growing evidence now indicates that high levels of S100B are suggestive of pathogenic processes in different neural, but also extra-neural, disorders. Indeed, modulation of S100B levels correlates with the occurrence of clinical and/or toxic parameters in experimental models of diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, amyotrophic lateral scl

Neurological disorders (ND) are the central nervous system (CNS) related complications originated by enhanced oxidative stress, mitochondrial failure and overexpression of proteins like S100B. S100B is a helix-loop-helix protein with the calcium-binding domain associated with various neurological disorders through activation of the MAPK pathway, increased NF-kB expression resulting in cell survival, proliferation and gene up-regulation. S100B protein plays a crucial role in Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, Schizophrenia and epilepsy because the high expression of t

Post cardiac arrest Syndrome (PCAS) is a systemic ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) that occurs after the return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC), characterized by endothelial dysfunction, systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), and multiple organ failure (MOF). This review focuses on the pathophysiological mechanisms, dynamic change patterns, and prognostic predictive value of three key categories of biomarkers in PCAS: inflammatory factors, endothelial injury biomarkers, and neuronal injury biomarkers. It covers the dual roles of inflammatory mediators such as Interleukin-6 (IL-6),

In recent years there has been a proliferation of interest in the brain-specific protein S100B, its many physiologic roles, and its behaviour in various neuropathologic conditions. Since the mid-1960s, its wide variety of intracellular and extracellular activities has been elucidated, and it has also been implicated in an increasing number of central nervous system (CNS) disorders. S100B is part of a superfamily of proteins, some of which (including S100B) have been implicated as calcium-dependent regulatory proteins that modulate the activity of effector proteins or cells. S100B is primarily

BACKGROUND: Minor head traumatisms are a common reason for consultation in paediatric emergency departments. The diagnosis of traumatic brain injuries involves performing a cranial computed tomography (CCT), associated with a risk of cancer due to the radiation. The serum S100B is an effective biomarker used to reduce reliance on CCT. While reference ranges have been determined, the limited number of cases regarding infants less than 4months of age has not allowed this biomarker to be used with this age group. Our study aimed to determine reference ranges for serum S100B based on a larger numb

Hypoxia-ischemia constitutes a risk in infants by altering cerebral blood flow regulatory mechanisms and causing loss of cerebral vascular auto-regulation. Hypotension, cerebral ischemia, and reperfusion are the main events involved in vascular auto-regulation leading to cell death and tissue damage. Reperfusion could be critical since organ damage, particularly of the brain, may be amplified during this period. An exaggerated activation of vasoactive agents of calcium mediated effects could be responsible for reperfusion injury, which, in turns, leads to cerebral hemorrhage and damage. These

Activated glial cells play an important role in a variety of neurological disorders. This study examines S100B protein levels in the serum of patients with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome, as potential marker for glial cell function. Two groups of children were examined: 61 reference patients and 33 patients with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome. It was found that S100B serum concentrations in the reference group decrease with increasing age. Furthermore it was found that the mean S100B concentration in serum of children with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome is significantly higher than in the refe

Portal-systemic encephalopathy is the prototype among the neuropsychiatric disorders that fall under the term Hepatic Encephalopathies. Ammonia toxicity is central to the pathophysiology of Portal-systemic encephalopathy, and neuronal ammonia toxicity is modulated by activated astrocytes. The calcium-binding astroglial key protein S100beta is released in response to glial activation, and its measurement in serum only recently became possible. Serum S100beta was determined by an ultrasensitive ELISA in patients (n=36) with liver cirrhosis and transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic stent-shunt.

Lyme borreliosis (LB) is the most common tick-borne infection in Europe, with Lyme neuroborreliosis (LNB) its second most frequent clinical manifestation. Prognostic factors for clinical outcomes in LNB have not been identified. Elevated serum levels of the brain damage markers neuron-specific enolase (NSE) and S100 calcium-binding protein B (S100B) have been associated with poor clinical outcomes in other disorders of the central nervous system. The aim of this study is to assess NSE and S100B in serum as prognostic biomarkers for clinical outcomes in paediatric LNB patients. Children evaluat

Vitiligo, the most common depigmenting disorder, is caused by immune destruction of melanocytes by cytotoxic CD8+ T cells. One weakness in vitiligo management is the lack of an assessment method for active depigmentation. Beginning with reports about increased S100B levels in different inflammatory and tissue damage processes, Speeckaert et al. explored correlations between the S100B dynamics and vitiligo activity, identifying high circulating S100B levels in patients with active depigmentation which were strongly correlated with the extent of affected skin surface. These authors have proposed

The preclinical window for acute brain injury is characterized by its considerable narrowness, thus necessitating the development of clinical evaluation methods that are both highly efficient and sensitive. Herein, we constructed a highly miniaturized photothermal immunoassay platform integrated onto a pipet tip for on-site detection of the central nervous system-specific protein S100β. Signal amplification was performed using a liposome-embedded CuS nano-octahedral framework (CuS NOFs). The template-synthesized CuS NOFs demonstrated a high photothermal conversion efficiency (30.2%). Chitosan

This study aimed to develop and validate a predictive model based on S100 calcium-binding protein B (S100B) and neuron-specific enolase (NSE) as the core of epilepsy secondary to cerebral infarction. For this aim, 156 cases of cerebral infarction from June 2018 to December 2019 were selected. According to the ratio of 7:3, 109 cases were used for training and 47 cases were used for validation. The factors influencing cerebral infarction secondary to epilepsy were analyzed by a univariate analysis comparing the general data of the two groups and binary logistic regression, and the prediction mo
