Concurrent pilonidal sinus of the nape of the neck and sacrococcygeal region.

The most common site for a pilonidal sinus is the sacrococcygeal region, typically affecting hirsute males. Hair entrapment beneath the skin triggers a granulomatous reaction, leading to the formation of a sinus tract. Here, we present a rare case of concurrent pilonidal abscess in both the nape of the neck and the natal cleft. To date, only five similar cases have been reported in the literature, making this presentation unique. The patient, in his mid-30s, presented with recurrent swelling and discharging sinuses in both the nape of the neck and the intergluteal region. The surgical intervent

Congenital Melanocytic Nevus Mimicking a Coccygeal Pad in the Sacrococcygeal Region.

Congenital melanocytic nevus (CMN) is a benign melanocytic proliferative lesion that presents at birth or in early infancy. When the lesion extends into the deep dermis or subcutaneous tissue, it can form a mass that is clinically and radiologically indistinguishable from other soft tissue tumors. We report a case of sacrococcygeal CMN mimicking a coccygeal pad. An 18-year-old man presented with a sacrococcygeal mass and tenderness. Magnetic resonance imaging and needle biopsy findings suggested a coccygeal pad. Because of persistent pain and the patient's desire for removal, the mass was exci

Sacrococcygeal teratoma--a 25-year experience in a UK regional center.

BACKGROUND: Sacrococcygeal teratoma (SCT) is uncommon (1:35,000-1:40,000 newborns). We report a 25-year single-center experience with a focus on late effects. METHODS: Surgical and tumor registries identified patients with SCT between 1977 and 2001. Perinatal data, associated anomalies, operative findings, histology, and survival were recorded. Continence was assessed clinically. Urodynamics and anorectal manometry were performed as indicated. RESULTS: Thirty-three patients (28 females) were treated for SCT. Before 1988, 2 of 18 were diagnosed antenatally compared with 8 of 15 between 1988 a

Myxopapillary ependymoma of the cauda equina with extension to the skin of the sacrococcygeal region.

Cutaneous involvement by myxopapillary ependymoma of the cauda equina is described clinically and morphologically. The patient, a young woman, was 12 years old at the time that the neoplasm was diagnosed. Skin involvement developed 12 1/2 years following the initial diagnosis of the primary neoplasm and after the third attempt at surgical extirpation. Involvement of the skin preceded the death of the patient by 11 months.

A rare case of fetus in fetu in the sacrococcygeal region: CT and MRI findings.

BACKGROUND: Fetus in fetu is a rare condition in which a malformed fetus is found in the body of a living twin. The retroperitoneum is the most common location of this condition. However, the sacrococcygeal region is a rare site of the disease. The presence of vertebral bodies and limbs differentiates FIF from teratoma. Imaging modalities are important for diagnosing FIF. CASE PRESENTATION: A 12-months old boy was hospitalized because of a mass in the sacrococcygeal region. CT showed a large, complex mass with bony structure resembling sacrococcygeal bone, hip bone and the femur in the sacroc

Extraspinal ependymoma presenting as a subcutaneous mass posterior to the sacrococcygeal region. Case report.

Ependymal cells may be found within the coccygeal ligament as well as in heterotopic positions and therefore ependymomas may rarely occur in extraspinal locations. Although the cauda equina is the most common location, less than 5% of all spinal ependymomas occur extradurally in the sacrococcygeal region. We report a case of extraspinal myxopapillary ependymoma arising in the subcutaneous soft tissue posterior to the sacrococcygeal region and review the relevant literature.

The prevalence of anaerobic infection in pilonidal sinus of the sacrococcygeal region and its effect on the complications.

Bacteriologic characteristics of pilonidal disease of the sacrococcygeal region were assessed in two groups of patients: patients with disease recurrence (group A), and patients who first ever presented for surgical treatment (group B). The frequency of anaerobic colonization was studied. Bacterial colonization is frequently present in patients with pilonidal disease of the sacrococcygeal region. Samples of the skin over the sacrococcygeal sinus showed the presence of bacterial colonization in 78% and 70% of group A and group B patients, respectively. Analysis of sinus fluid samples revealed t

The human vertebral column at the end of the embryonic period proper. 4. The sacrococcygeal region.

The sacral and coccygeal vertebrae at 8 postovulatory weeks (the end of the embryonic period proper) have been studied by means of graphic reconstructions. The cartilaginous sacrum is now a definitive unit composed of five separable vertebrae, each of which consists of a future centrum and bilateral neural processes. The base of each neural process consists of an anterolateral or alar element, not present in the lumbar region, and a posterolateral part, which includes costal and transverse elements. The usual illustrations, in which the costal component is placed in the alar element, are incor

Recurrent extrarenal Teratoid Wilms tumor in sacrococcygeal region of children after initial surgery: A rare case.

Teratoid Wilms tumor is a very rare tumor, about 70 cases have been reported worldwide. Extrarenal teratoid Wilms tumor is even less common. We reported a child with sacrococcygeal teratoid Wilms tumor who was diagnosed with teratoma at the time of the initial operation and relapsed shortly after the operation; we followed up for nearly two years after the second operation with no tumor recurrence or metastasis. This case tells clinicians that the diagnosis of extrarenal teratoid Wilms tumor needs to be careful, and although the prognosis of the disease is good, the premise is complete surgica

The treatment of pilonidal disease of the sacrococcygeal region by the method of limited excision and open wound healing.

Results of the surgical treatment of the pilonidal disease of the sacrococcygeal region in correlation with anaerobic infection are analyzed. Fifty patients with the disease recurrence (group A) and fifty patients presenting for operative treatment for the first time (group B) were observed. Twenty-five patients from group B were operated on by the method of limited excision and wound healing by open granulation and the other half were operated on by the method of excision and primary suture. The material for bacteriologic examination was obtained during the operative procedure. All patients u

Metastasizing myxopapillary ependymoma of the sacrococcygeal region. A clinico-pathologic, light- and electronmicroscopic, immunohistochemical, tissue culture, and cytogenetic analysis of a case.

A case of recurrent and metastasizing subcutaneous myxopapillary ependymoma of the sacrococcygeal region in a 44-year-old man is reported. The tumor was characterized light microscopically by numerous papillary projections, lined by epithelium-like cells, with a variable degree of polymorphism. Histochemical analysis relating to glucosaminoglycans indicated the presence of hyaluronic acid and chondroitin-4- and/or 6-sulfate. Using immunoperoxidase techniques, glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and S-100 protein were demonstrated within the tumor cells. Ultrastructurally, the tumor cells we
