Oil body bound oleosin-rhFGF9 fusion protein expressed in safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) stimulates hair growth and wound healing in mice.

BACKGROUND: Fibroblast growth factor 9 (FGF9) is a heparin-binding growth factor, secreted by both mesothelial and epithelial cells, which participates in hair follicle regeneration, wound healing, and bone development. A suitable source of recombinant human FGF9 (rhFGF9) is needed for research into potential clinical applications. We present that expression of oleosin-rhFGF9 fusion protein in safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) seeds stimulates hair growth and wound healing. RESULTS: The oleosin-rhFGF9 expressed in safflower seeds, in which it localizes to the surface of oil bodies. The expr

Lifelong n-3 PUFA Consumption Reduces HER2+ Mammary Tumour Growth and Alters Immune Markers Compared to Safflower- or Corn Oil-Based Sources of n-6 PUFA.

BACKGROUND: n-3 PUFA derived from marine sources, including eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), exhibit potential for breast cancer prevention. In contrast, higher dietary intakes of n-6 PUFA, such as linoleic acid (LA), have been implicated in promoting mammary tumourigenesis. However, there is a need for further exploration into how n-3 PUFA influence breast cancer development in comparison to different amounts and sources of LA. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of n-3 PUFA-enriched diets versus n-6 PUFA diets differing in LA content, i

Effect of major nutrient substitutions on body weight gain, blood glucose and cholesterol levels, and the rate of drug metabolism in the liver.

Rats were fed diets resembling a normal human diet, except that, in a complete factorial fashion, safflower oil and/or mineral oil were substituted for part of the fat, while fructose, lactose and/or cellulose were substituted for carbohydrate, and zein was substituted for milk protein. Food intake and weight gain were not influenced by cellulose and mineral oil, but zein decreased both substantially. Plasma cholesterol was unchanged by safflower oil or mineral oil but was decreased by fructose. Plasma glucose was reduced as the starch-to-sugar ratio increased. The rate of aniline metabolism w

Quantitative and qualitative changes in phospholipid in the intestine of the gerbil and the development of lipodystrophy.

Female gerbils fed a diet containing 20% coconut oil develop an intestinal lipodystrophy that is not seen in animals fed a diet containing 20% safflower oil or a diet of 20% coconut oil supplemented with 0.1% inositol. The coconut oil diets contained 1.5% safflower oil to prevent essential fatty acid deficiency. The level of inositol in the intestinal tissue of animals fed the coconut oil diet not supplemented with inositol has been shown to be decreased. Phospholipid analyses of the intestinal tissue were undertaken to determine if this decrease in total inositol was reflected in a decrease i

Protective effect of coconut oil on renal necrosis occurring in rats fed a methyl-deficient diet.

Weanling rats fed a methyl-deficient diet develop renal necrosis with acute renal failure. The aim of this experiment was to explore further the role of coconut oil in this experimental model. Weanling Wistar male rats were fed methyl-deficient and their controls were fed methyl-supplemented diets. Coconut oil was fed at 14% and 20%, the latter concentration with and without 1% safflower oil (rich in linoleic acid); other groups received similar diets but instead of coconut oil, a mixture of hydrogenated vegetable oil and corn oil (rich in unsaturated fatty acids) was employed. Coconut oil fed

Effects of dietary oil source in pre-starter diets on growth performance, nutrient utilization, and organ weights in broiler chickens.

After hatching, broiler chicks transition from relying on yolk lipids to dietary nutrients. Providing dietary oils with a fatty acid profile similar to that of the yolk, particularly rich in oleic acid, may facilitate this metabolic shift. This study evaluated the effects of different oil sources in the pre-starter diet on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, and organ development in broiler chickens. A total of 2,016 one-day-old male Ross-308 broilers were allocated to three pre-starter diets (0-4 d) containing 30 g/kg of soybean oil, safflower oil, or sunflower oil (12 replicates of 5

Influence of dietary lipids on the effect of chlorpromazine on membrane properties of rabbit red cells.

The effect of diets containing different types of common natural oils on physical properties of red cells was investigated by using rabbits. The rabbits were fed for 18 months on a standard diet in which 8% of its energy content was provided by safflower oil and 32% energy by either more safflower oil or fish oil, linseed oil, olive oil or palm oil. Erythrocyte deformability was significantly decreased by the fish oil diet compared with each of the other diets. Osmotic fragility was significantly less (66 mM) for red cells from rabbits fed on the linseed oil diet, and significantly greater (71

Transcutaneous application of oil and prevention of essential fatty acid deficiency in preterm infants.

The topical application of vegetable oil was assessed as an alternative means of providing essential fatty acids (EFA) to parentally fed preterm infants who were not receiving lipid. Three infant pairs ranging in gestational age from 26-32 weeks were studied. Safflower oil or safflower oil esters (1 g linoleic acid/kg/day) were applied to available areas daily. All infants rapidly developed biochemical EFA deficiency. The plasma fatty acid profiles were similar in infants with or without topical oil, and all returned to normal once parenteral lipid was introduced. We found no evidence to sugge

Transcriptomic and metabolomic analysis reveals key transcription factors regulating lignin biosynthesis in safflower hull.

Safflower has recently garnered increasing attention as a promising oil crop. The oil content of safflower achenes and the efficiency of subsequent oil extraction are significantly influenced by the hull/pericarp percentage (the ratio of the pericarp weight to the total achene weight). However, the genetic regulation mechanism controlling the hull development remains largely unexplored. In this study, we conducted phenotypic, metabolomic, and transcriptomic analyses on two safflower varieties with distinct hull percentage: normal hull (NH) and thin hull (TH). Our results revealed that the high

Dietary fish oil, and to a lesser extent the fat-1 transgene, increases astrocyte activation in response to intracerebroventricular amyloid-β 1-40 in mice.

OBJECTIVES: Increases in astrocytes and one of their markers, glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) have been reported in the brains of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). N-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) modulate neuroinflammation in animal models; however, their effect on astrocytes is unclear. METHODS: Fat-1 mice and their wildtype littermates were fed either a fish oil diet or a safflower oil diet deprived of n-3 PUFA. At 12 weeks, mice underwent intracerebroventricular infusion of amyloid-β 1-40. Astrocyte phenotype in the hippocampus was assessed at baseline and 10 days post-

Fish oil regulates adiponectin secretion by a peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma-dependent mechanism in mice.

Adiponectin has insulin-sensitizing, antiatherogenic, and anti-inflammatory properties, but little is known about factors that regulate its secretion. To examine the effect of fish oil on adiponectin secretion, mice were fed either a control diet or isocaloric diets containing 27% safflower oil or 27, 13.5, and 8% menhaden fish oil. Within 15 days, fish oil feeding raised plasma adiponectin concentrations two- to threefold in a dose-dependent manner, and the concentrations remained approximately twofold higher for 7 days when the fish oil diet was replaced by the safflower oil diet.
