Hematologic reference values have been established for captive adult cotton-top tamarins (Saguinus oedipus oedipus) by carrying out full blood counts and fibrinogen estimation on 43 clinically normal animals. Females were shown to have significantly lower hemoglobin levels, red cell counts and packed cell volumes, and higher reticulocyte counts than males. The reference values were used to identify abnormal changes in the blood of 13 clinical cases. Marked neutrophilia was found in animals with localized bacterial infections, and a degenerative left shift was recorded in an individual with str

GB virus B (GBV-B) is a new world monkey-associated flavivirus used to model acute hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Critical for evaluation of antiviral or vaccine approaches is an understanding of the effect of HCV on the liver at different stages of infection. In the absence of longitudinal human tissue samples at defined time points, we have characterized changes in tamarins. As early as 2 weeks post-infection histological changes were noticeable, and these were established in all animals by 6 weeks. Despite high levels of liver-associated viral RNA, there was reversal of hepatic damage o

Spontaneous intracardiac thrombosis is rarely reported in animals, particularly nonhuman primates. The finding of 2 cases of intracardiac thrombi in mustached tamarins (Saguinus mystax) that died as a consequence of congestive heart failure prompted us to do a retrospective study to determine the frequency of this condition. Clinical records, necropsy reports, and tissues from 60 mustached tamarins that died or were euthanized between 1996 and 2009 were reviewed. Of the 60 monkeys whose cases were reviewed, 10 (16.6%) had intracardiac thrombi, and 4 (6.6%) had dissecting aortic aneurysms. Of t

Pheochromocytomas are uncommon neoplasms of the adrenal medulla that are most frequently reported in rats and select mouse strains. In many cases, especially those in man, pheochromocytoma is associated with familial tumor syndromes, because of inherited mutations in a variety of proto-oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes. Nonhuman primates are valuable animal models for a variety of human diseases because of their similar anatomy and physiology; however, cases of pheochromocytomas have only rarely been reported in nonhuman primates. Herein, we characterize the gross, histologic, and immunohis

Cyclical changes in concentration of plasma progesterone, urinary oestrone-conjugates and urinary luteinizing hormone (LH) were compared in young and older cotton-top tamarins (Saguinus oedipus) and saddle-backed tamarins (S. fuscicollis). A group of six young adult tamarin females (4-5 years of age) was sampled over eight periods of 6-8 weeks and six older (14-20 years of age) females were sampled over thirteen periods. There was hormonal evidence of ovulation in all of the sampling periods for young females; in five of thirteen periods, older females displayed no evidence of ovulation. Of th

Quantitative data on the gut proportions of the recently-described black-headed marmoset (Callithrix nigriceps) from western Brazilian Amazonian are presented. Like other marmosets, C. nigriceps exhibits a relatively large caecum and colon associated with adaptations for gummivory. The degree of gut specialisation recorded is greater than that for any other platyrrhine for which quantitative data are available. Gum was found in the stomach contents of all four individuals examined, although the fruit/seeds of as many as seven different plant taxa were also encountered, in addition to insects o

Female rhesus monkeys and marmosets were fed a diet containing blighted potatoes (Phytophthora infestans) at a level of 10g/kg per day for at least two weeks prior to breeding and six weeks following conception in order to gain additional information on the association of blighted potatoes and the development of anencephaly and spina bifida in primate species. There was an absence of either of these neural-tube defects in 32 rhesus and 14 marmoset infants whose mothers had received a blighted potato diet. In addition there were no cranial osseous defects. There were, however, two rhesus monkey

A wild-caught, research-naïve, adult male mustached tamarin (Saguinus mystax) experienced sudden onset of bilateral hindlimb paresis. Physical examination established the presence of paralysis and the lack of femoral pulses and deep pain in both legs. There were no signs of external trauma and, due to a poor prognosis, euthanasia was elected. Necropsy findings included pleural effusion, partial pulmonary atelectasis and congestion, dilatatory cardiomyopathy, a renal hemorrhagic infarct, and a thromboembolus located at the trifurcation of the distal abdominal aorta. The clinical and histologic

This report describes postmortem findings after the sudden death of a captive-bred middle-aged male cotton-top tamarin (Saguinus oedipus). A firm structure was attached to the pleura in the chest cavity and was assessed as a primary tumor without obvious metastasis. Histologically, the mass showed heterogenicity with immunohistochemistry (IHC) reactivity to vimentin, suggesting a diagnosis of fibrosarcoma of mesenchymal origin.

Mesocestoides spp. are tapeworms harbored in the intestine of many domestic and wild carnivores, birds of prey and, rarely, of humans. The life cycle is assumed to involve three hosts and the metacestode juvenile stage (tetrathyridium) may reproduce asexually, provoking severe systemic infections. In the present study, a case of a peritoneal infection by Mesocestoides sp. occurred in a captive gold-handed tamarin (Saguinus midas) is described. Phylogenetic positions based on CO1 and 12S loci were analysed to describe in details this unusual finding of Mesocestoides in a callitrichid monkey. Th

OBJECTIVES: Skeletal asymmetries reflect developmental stability and mechanical, functional, and physiological influences on bone growth. In humans, researchers have documented the greatest limb bone bilateral asymmetry in diaphyseal breadths, with less asymmetry in articular and maximum length dimensions. However, it remains unclear as to whether the pattern observed for humans is representative of nonhuman primates, wherein bilateral loading may minimize directional asymmetry. This study adds to the small body of asymmetry data on nonhuman primates by investigating patterns of long bone asym

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Spontaneous colitis and colon cancer in the cotton-top tamarin have been shown to resemble human ulcerative colitis and its associated cancer. The effect of environment and diet on the evolution of the disease was studied in animals from birth to 5 years of age.
METHODS: Newborn tamarins were assigned to three groups reared in (1) a colony in which colitis was highly prevalent and fed a standard diet; (2) an isolation unit and fed a standard diet or one of two semipurified diets; and (3) a multispecies nursery, returned to the colony, and fed the same semipurified diets. The establishment of baseline data on parasites from wild primates is essential to understand how changes in habitat or climatic disturbances will impact parasite-host relationships. In nature, multiparasitic infections of primates usually fluctuate temporally and seasonally, implying that the acquisition of reliable data must occur over time. Individual parasite infection data from two wild populations of New World primates, the saddleback (Leontocebus weddelli) and emperor (Saguinus imperator) tamarin, were collected over 3 years to establish baseline levels of helminth prevalence and parasi

Reproduction is restricted to a small number of animals within both captive and wild groups of callitrichid monkeys (marmosets and tamarins). Sexual development of nonbreeding group members might differ from that of active breeders. Measurements of physical growth typically involve animal handling. However, capture and restraint of callitrichid monkeys can disrupt natural behaviors and physiology. This study introduces a method for estimating size of external genitalia by measuring frontal scrotum width of unrestrained cotton-top tamarin males. We examined whether scrotum width was a reliable

Prior studies have shown that female cotton-top tamarins usually do not ovulate while living with natal groups, and most females do not ovulate until they are paired with an unfamiliar adult male. To examine the role of unfamiliar adult males on stimulating ovarian function, four cotton-top females were studied during three conditions: females living with their natal group for six weeks, living alone but exposed to a single unfamiliar adult male located 15 cm away from the female's cage for four weeks, and living with an unfamiliar adult male for six weeks. Behavior and urinary hormonal concen

Six Dipetalonema species have been reported from Neotropical monkeys, Dipetalonema gracile, Dipetalonema graciliformis and Dipetalonema caudispina being the dominant species found in French Guiana primates. Adult filarioids isolated from the abdominal cavity of tamarins (Saguinus midas) in French Guiana were morphologically and molecularly identified as D. graciliformis. Phylogenetic analysis based on DNA and amino acid sequences of the cox1 gene as well as the concatenated sequences of the cox1 and the 18S genes indicated that D. graciliformis belongs to the clade 4 (ONC4) of Onchocercidae. Twelve young adult captivity-born tamarin monkeys (Saguinus fuscicollis) were each exposed to 150 cercariae of Schistosoma mansoni (KEB strain): 6 by the percutaneous (pc) and 6 by the subcutaneous (sc) route. The prepatent period, as determined by eggs in the feces, was 34-39 days for both groups. Weekly quantitative fecal examinations revealed that although both groups actively passed eggs for as long as the duration of the experiment (18 months), the sc group excreted a significantly higher number of eggs/gram/day in the feces than did the pc group. Eggs recovered from the feces of both gro

In cooperatively breeding groups of mammals, reproduction is usually restricted to a small number of individuals within the social group. Sexual development of mammals can be affected by social environment, but we know little regarding effects of the cooperative-breeding system on males. Cotton-top tamarin (Saguinus oedipus oedipus) offspring typically do not reproduce in their natal group, even though they may be physically mature. We examined neonatal and pubertal development in captive male cotton-top tamarins as an example of reproductive development within a cooperative-breeding system an

Enteroparasites were investigated in free-ranging Saguinus ursulus from the eastern Brazilian Amazon. Parasites were detected in 76.5% (13/17) of capture events, with Prosthenorchis sp. most frequently detected (58.8%; 10/17). Animals showed good body condition and no clinical abnormalities. This is the first report of Prosthenorchis sp. infection in S. ursulus.
