Outbreak of pasteurellosis in captive Bolivian squirrel monkeys (Saimiri boliviensis).

In September 2012, five Bolivian squirrel monkeys housed in a zoological park died within sequential several days without obvious clinical signs. In a necrospy, one monkey presented swelling of the kidney with multifocal white nodules in the parenchyma, and other two had pulmonary congestion. Histopathologically, multifocal bacterial colonies of gram-negative coccobacillus were found in the sinusoid of the liver in all monkeys examined (Nos.1-4). Additionally, purulent pyelonephritis, pneumonia and disseminated small bacterial colonies in blood vessels were observed. Immunohistochemically, the

Nesidioblastosis associated with hyperglycemia in two squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus).

Nesidioblastosis associated with progressive weight loss and hyperglycemia was diagnosed in two mid-adult, wild-caught, male squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus). Hyperglycemia, glucosuria, and abnormal glucose tolerance test results were found when the monkeys were presented for clinical evaluation for chronic weight loss, episodic dehydration, hypothermia, and lethargy. Immunohistochemical studies of the pancreatic tissue demonstrated that the proliferating endocrine cells stained predominantly glucagon-positive in the most severely affected monkey.

Preliminary quantitative studies of prehension in squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus).

Squirrel monkeys were filmed in the act of prehending objects of various sizes, shapes, and states of motion. Subsequent three-dimensional analyses indicated that general aspects of prehension do not vary grossly across individuals nor as a function of the object to be prehended, at least at the level of measurement used in these studies. The monkeys exhibited only whole-hand control, even with small or moving objects. However, in comparison with stationary objects, moving objects did elicit variations of arm and hand positions, and were associated with higher frequencies of blinking than nonm

Characterization of Gilbert-like syndrome in squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus).

Bolivian squirrel monkeys, unlike those of Brazilian origin, exhibit a marked fasting hyperbilirubinemia (FH) similar to that observed in Gilbert's syndrome in man. Since no delays in the hepatic clearance of sulfobromophthalein or indocyanine green are present, the Bolivian monkey appears to be similar to Gilbert's type I syndrome. FH can be significantly decreased by either phenobarbital or tin-protoporphyrin pretreatment. Nicotinic acid-induced hyperbilirubinemia and delayed tolbutamide clearance were not observed as in the human syndrome.

Paracoccidioidomycosis (South American blastomycosis) in a squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus).

A female squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus) had granulomatous lesions in the liver and colon. There were many fungal organisms in sections of liver and many of these organisms had multiple buds on their surface. Although we did not prepare fungal cultures, the appearance of the organisms was sufficient to identify them as Paracoccidiodes brasiliensis, the cause of paracoccidioidomycosis (South American blastomycosis).

An assay of drug-induced emesis in the squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus).

BACKGROUND: Emesis has significant evolutionary value as a defense mechanism against ingested toxins; however, it is also one of the most common adverse symptoms associated with both disease and medical treatments of disease. The development of improved antiemetic pharmacotherapies has been impeded by a shortage of animal models. METHODS: The present studies characterized the responses of the squirrel monkey to pharmacologically diverse emetic drugs. Subjects were administered nicotine (0.032-0.56 mg/kg), lithium chloride (150-250 mg/kg), arecoline (0.01-0.32 mg/kg), or apomorphine (0.032-0.3

Fatal toxoplasmosis in a captive squirrel monkey (Saimiri boliviensis) in Portugal.

New World monkeys are especially vulnerable to develop severe clinical manifestations and succumb to acute toxoplasmosis. This study aimed to describe the histopathological findings and genotypic characterization of the Toxoplasma gondii strain involved in a lethal case occurring in a zoo-housed black-capped squirrel monkey (Saimiri boliviensis) in Portugal. Cyst-like structures suggestive of Sarcocystidae parasites and acute injuries in liver and brain were observed by light microscopy examination. By immunohistochemistry, calprotectin, T. gondii antigen and Iba1 antigen had a positive signal

An outbreak of toxoplasmosis in squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) in South Korea.

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) is an intracellular protozoan parasite that can infect warm-blooded animals including humans. New World monkeys, such as squirrel monkeys, are more susceptible to T. gondii than Old World monkeys, often developing fatal disease. METHODS: In this study, seven of thirteen dead squirrel monkeys at Seoul Grand Park were tested to find the cause of sudden death. RESULTS: The main histopathological findings included interstitial pneumonia, necrotizing hepatitis, and splenitis. Periodic acid-Schiff staining of liver, spleen, and lung revealed cyst structure

Outbreak of toxoplasmosis in four squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) in Japan.

Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan parasite that causes fatal disease in New World monkeys. Several reports have described outbreaks of toxoplasmosis in squirrel monkeys. Here, we report the death of four squirrel monkeys in a captive colony from acute toxoplasmosis, one of which developed toxoplasmosis about 1 year after the initial outbreak. Serum anti-T. gondii antibody was detected by a latex agglutination test in the animals, and one presented seropositive before clinical signs were observed. Macroscopically, the lungs were severely affected and three animals showed pulmonary edema. Microsc

The first report of peritoneal tetrathyridiosis in squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus).

This report describes a case of peritoneal larval cestodiasis caused by tetrathyridia of Mesocestoides sp. in an adult female squirrel monkey. The monkey had lived in a zoological garden in Japan and had a clinical history of wasting. At necropsy, numerous whitish oval masses were found in the liver and peritoneal cavity. These masses contained larval cestodes. Morphological observation and molecular analyses of the mitochondrial 12S ribosomal RNA gene and cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene sequences allowed us to identify the larva as the tetrathyridium of Mesocestoides sp. This is the first

An epidemic of toxoplasmosis in a captive colony of squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus).

An epidemic of acute, disseminated toxoplasmosis caused 30 per cent mortality and an apparent 100 per cent morbidity in a captive colony of squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus). The source of the infection could not be elucidated. Although most deaths were due to pulmonary oedema, one monkey probably died of heart and liver failure. These findings support the view that New World monkeys are unusually sensitive to Toxoplasma gondii infection. The similarity of the disease in these monkeys with that in immunocompromised human beings is an observation worthy of further investigation.

Prehension in Cebus and Saimiri: I. Grip type and hand preference.

Prehension was examined in tufted capuchins (Cebus apella) and squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus). Individual subjects were videotaped from frontal and sagittal planes while they grasped small objects presented in several ways (in view, out of view, embedded, moving). Capuchins used a precision grip in 30% of trials and in more than half of trials with stationary objects. Most (54%) of the precision grips used were opposition of the thumb to the index finger; however, eight other forms were also observed. Squirrel monkeys never used a precision grip. Data on hand preference, preliminary data

The somatotopic organization of the ventroposterior thalamus of the squirrel monkey, Saimiri sciureus.

Multiunit microelectrode mapping techniques were used to investigate the organization of the somatosensory thalamus in squirrel monkeys. Receptive fields and response characteristics were determined for closely spaced recording sites along arrays of electrode penetrations that passed through the ventral thalamus dorsoventrally, rostrocaudally, or lateromedially. The results were related to thalamic architecture and led to the following conclusions: (1) A large, single, systematic representation of the body surface occupied most or all of the ventroposterior nucleus, VP. The nucleus was further

Oxygen consumption and thyroid function in the squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus).

Thyroidal accumulation of 125I and the biological half-life of 131I-thyroxine were determined in the squirrel monkey. Oxygen consumption and the respiratory quotient were also measured. A peak uptake of 131I by the thyroid of 45.3% of the injected isotope occurred 4 hours after administration of the radioisotope. The biological half-life of the 131I-thyroxine was 22-24 hours. Oxygen consumption was 1.02 cm3 O2/g/hour and the respiratory quotient was 0.82. It was concluded that the squirrel monkey is hypermetabolic when compared with other laboratory animals of the same size.

Downregulation of p56(lck) tyrosine kinase activity in T cells of squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) correlates with the nontransforming and apathogenic properties of herpesvirus saimiri in its natural host.

Herpesvirus saimiri is capable of transforming T lymphocytes of various primate species to stable growth in culture. The interaction of the T-cellular tyrosine kinase p56(lck) with the transformation-associated viral protein Tip has been shown before to activate the kinase and provides one model for the T-cell-specific transformation by herpesvirus saimiri subgroup C strains. In contrast to other primate species, squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) are naturally infected with the virus without signs of lymphoma or other disease. Although the endogenous virus was regularly recovered from periph
