Ultrasound (US) proved highly effective for detection and localisation of stones in salivary glands. Because of the high accuracy and the possibility to detect non-opaque stones sonography should be performed as a supplementary measure if on plain film the localisation of the calculi is questionable. In this study we report on two patients with stones in the glandula sublingualis.

This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of extracorporeal lithotripsy (ECL) in the treatment of salivary stones. In a prospective study, 15 patients suffering from sialolithiasis were treated by applying extracorporeally generated shock waves. No patients needed general anaesthesia, sedatives, or analgesics. Treatment was effective in 80% of the 15 patients in this series (5 total efficacy, and 7 partial efficacy). Only minor complications were observed. Lithotripsy is a promising nonsurgical therapy for the treatment of sialolithiasis.

Salivary calculi were formed by a laminated mixture of inorganic and organic substancs. However, there was no regular pattern for the growth of stones, as laminal thickness and the arrangement of the laminal component were not uniform. Finger-like radial projections, longitudinal pavements or amorphous structures were seen on the fractured surface of the calculi. No inert foreign body or microorganism was found in the calculi. There were two modes of formation in calculous nucleus, one developed by maturation of a primitive core, the other formed in homogenous mineral mass. X-ray microanalysis

Sialolithiasis is common in salivary glands, especially in the submandibular and parotid ducts. X-Ray diffractometry was the principal technique used for their analysis, sometimes associated with scanning electron microscopy. Hydroxyapatite was the most frequently described constituent, in association with whitlockite and other calcium phosphates as brushite or octocalcium phosphate. Proteic matter was detected, as mucoproteins, albumin, nucleoproteins or as degenerative bacterial matter. This study presents the identification of constituents by mid-infrared spectrometry of 74 sialoliths. Thei

Sialolithiasis is the most common disease of salivary glands. It is a condition characterized by the obstruction of a salivary gland or its excretory duct due to the formation of calcareous concretions, resulting in salivary ectasia and even determining the subsequent dilatation of the salivary gland. The sialolith usually measure from 1 mm to less than 10 mm. They rarely measure more than 15 mm. Infrequently giant salivary gland calculi (GSGC) >15 mm have been reported in the literature. The submandibular gland and its duct appear to be the sites most susceptible to this disease.THE AIMS OF TH

A common pathology of the salivary gland, salivary lithiases are usually removed by open surgery. Most frequently localized in the sub-mandibular gland, calculi can also occur in the parotid gland. We developed a new procedure to treat salivary lithiasis using extracorporeal electromagnetic shock waves. New material was especially adapted for the salivary gland for lithotripsy without anesthesia. Two-hundred patients were treated; 63% had not lithiasis after treatment and 37% had small residual stones measuring less than 3 mm; 97% of the patients were symptom-free and salivary excretion was im

The feasibility of fragmentation of salivary stones by a new extracorporeal piezoelectric lithotripter was investigated. A total of 40 salivary stones were submitted to piezoelectric shockwave treatment. Prior to shockwave application the diameter, weight and volume of all the stones were determined. After shockwave application the chemical composition of the stones was investigated by X-ray diffractometry. Fragmentation was achieved in 35 of 40 (87.5%) stones. Of these 40 stones, 25 (62.5%) were disintegrated adequately (residual fragments less than 1.5 mm). No statistically significant corre

OBJECTIVE: Giant salivary gland calculi (GSGC; >15 mm) are considered rare. Only 14 well-documented cases have been reported in the literature since 1942. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the imaging modality and treatment outcome of patients with GSGC.
STUDY DESIGN: Six personally observed subjects with GSGC were evaluated and treated. Occlusal film, panoramic radiograph, axial computed tomographic (CT) scan, and scintigraphy were used for imaging. Stone location, shape, and size were estimated on occlusal film, panoramic radiograph, and CT scans. Stones were removed with transoral

Salivary gland lithiasis is uncommon in pediatric patients. Color Doppler ultrasonography (US) enables an accurate diagnosis of lithiasis to be made without exposure to the radiation of traditional imaging techniques. The development of minimally invasive techniques in the ENT field has made salivary lithotripsy a feasible alternative to traditional invasive surgery. The safety and efficacy of shock wave lithotripsy for salivary calculi were evaluated in pediatric patients. Seven children (5 males; age 4-15 years) with single calculi (mean diameter 4.4 mm) of the submandibular (n = 4) and paro

Shock wave lithotripsy of salivary gland stones has become more and more efficient in the treatment of sialolithiasis during the last years. We use two different methods in our hospital: Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) and endoscopically intracorporeal lithotripsy (EISL). The results of both therapies are compatible; 60-70% could be successfully treated. The indication is different due to the localisation of the salivary gland stone. Stones that are located in the glandula or very proximal in the duct should be fragmented by extracorporeal lithotripsy. Stones located in the duct a

Piezoelectric lithotripsy was performed in 14 patients with salivary stones. None of the patients required anaesthesia, analgesics or sedatives. All of the salivary stones could be fragmented totally during the first lithotripsy procedure. Three months after treatment with extracorporeal shock waves all the patients were free of symptoms and in 7 out of 14 patients no concrement could be found by sonography. The piezoelectric lithotripsy of salivary stones had caused no serious side effects as proved by clinical, biochemical, sonographic and magnetic resonance imaging examinations. Extracorpor

In this study calculi from human submandibular salivary glands were examined with the method of fluorescence and diffraction of X-rays, as well as the radiocrystallographique method. Beside the already known substances, a significant amount of iodine was found. It is the first time that iodine is found as component of calculi of the human salivary glands. The patients history (thyroid glands etc) didn't give an explanation for the presence of iodine.

Four patients were subjected to sialolithotomy of the submandibular gland in the Department of Otolaryngology, Collegium Medicum, Jagiellonian University in Cracow. The resected calculi were examined under a scanning electron microscope and chemical analysis of their structure was carried out. Results of these studies were compared with clinical observations. It has been found that sialoliths are built up by inorganic salts, mainly calcium compounds. Crystallization processes proceed at variable rates and are related to duration of the disease and intensity of inflammatory reaction.

Sialolithiasis is a common disease of the major salivary glands. A supplement to the traditional therapies is extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy of the calculus. This method has been adopted from the therapy of renal or bladder calculi. Patients with a solitary calculus of parotid or submandibular gland were treated with a specially designed lithotriptor. In a retrospective study the results of this therapy were analysed. The success rate was far better for parotid gland calculi than for submandibular calculi. We could not find better results than those published in literature with other de
