This paper analyzes some pathologies of the submandibular salivary gland that present a special interest for facial aesthetic surgeons. Even up-to-date techniques to correct the aesthetic deformities of the submandibular and cervical regions can be disappointing when the patient presents an increasing volume or ptosis of the submandibular salivary gland. Sometimes, even though the submandibular gland has not been preoperatively identified, it may become evident postoperatively, compromising the submandibular and cervical contour because the musculocutaneous flaccidity has been corrected and th

Adequate salivary secretion is crucial to both oral and general health, since it provides a complex milieu for support of the microbial populations of the mouth, while at the same time containing antimicrobial products that help control these microbial populations. This paper summarizes several aspects of salivary component function, gland secretion mechanisms, and immunopathogenesis as related to oral health and disease. Salivary components mediate microbial attachment to oral surfaces, and also interact with planktonic microbial surfaces to facilitate agglutination and elimination of pathoge

Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is characterised by an autoimmune response that targets the salivary and lacrimal glands, resulting in dry mouth and eyes. In addition to these local manifestations, the systemic involvement of other organs can also occur. Current treatment options primarily focus on replacement therapies and the use of hormones or immunosuppressants to mitigate tissue and organ damage caused by excessive autoimmune reactions. However, these interventions are unable to restore the function of salivary glands that have sustained damage. In recent years, advancements in regenerative medic

Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease of the supporting tissues of the tooth. The host-microbial interaction in periodontitis leads to ulceration of sulcular epithelium which acts as a portal of entry for the bacteria to enter the connective tissue and thus into the systemic circulation. Elimination of causative agent through non-surgical periodontal therapy causes a reduction in inflammation and periodontal microbes. Therefore, it is of interest to examine the effect of scaling on salivary flow rate, pH, salivary protein and calcium concentration. A total 50 patients were selected and they

PURPOSE: This paper describes the technique for balloon dilatation of salivary duct strictures and evaluates the clinical and radiographic findings in a consecutive series of 36 affected glands.
METHODS: Thirty-four patients (36 glands) had balloon dilatation of their salivary duct strictures performed under fluoroscopic control. They were evaluated immediately afterwards and at review by sialography.
RESULTS: In 36 cases attempted, 33 (92%) strictures were dilated. The immediate post-treatment sialogram was available in 28 cases, of which 23 (82%) demonstrated complete and four (14%) partia

Acute and chronic inflammatory diseases of the major and minor salivary glands constitute the most common clinical syndrome of salivary glands. During the past decade, the use of antibiotics along with fluid hydration and electrolyte management has almost eliminated the development of fulminating acute suppurative parotitis in hospital surgical patients. Although acute bacterial and viral sialadenitis persists, the clinical challenge has changed, with more focus on the chronic inflammatory group of diseases. The pathogenesis of the chronic salivary inflammatory disease spectrum has also change

Sialendoscopy (SE) represents nowadays one of the standard diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in the treatment of major salivary glands lithiasis. We know from experience that it is successful only in small percentage of patients, when used in monotherapy. However, it represents an indispensable part of all of the combined minimally invasive gland-preserving treatment techniques, the success rate of which is around 90%. In this work, we focused on the role of sialendoscopy in the treatment of patients with larger inflamed fixed stones in glandula parotis. We conducted a total of 364 sialend

The stimulation of the superior cervical ganglion increased the salivary flow rate (about five-fold) in all 35 rabbits studied but two. The administration of alpha or beta adrenoceptor blocking drugs was unable to eliminate the positive effect of the sympathetic stimulation on the salivary flow, though the flow rate fell about 50% with the administration of each of the blockers. According to these results both types of receptors may be involved in the secretory response of this gland. Nevertheless it seems that the beta-adrenoceptors play a more important role in the secretory response and the

1. We have studied synapse elimination in the submandibular ganglion of neonatal rats to determine the effects of retarded target growth on synaptic development. Neurons of this ganglion provide parasympathetic innervation to the submandibular and sublingual salivary glands. 2. Ligating the main salivary ducts 2-4 days after birth at a point where nerve fibers were not damaged reduces gland weight by 55% during the 2nd wk after birth and 80% by adulthood. 3. In control animals, the average number of preganglionic inputs/neuron normally declines steadily during the first few weeks after birth,

Red, nonulcerated, uncomfortable oral mucosal lesions that are often thought to be caused by chronic xerostomia develop in some patients with Sjögren's syndrome (SS). However, we find that these lesions (1) clinically resemble chronic atrophic candidiasis (CAC), (2) usually yield Candida species from their surface, and (3) can be eliminated by topical antifungal drugs in spite of continuing xerostomia. In 246 patients who had primary or secondary SS, we correlated the presence or absence of atrophic oral mucosal lesions with the patient's salivary function and other clinical features. The 91 p

This study aimed to evaluate the impact of Nystatin oral rinse on salivary and supragingival microbiota in adults with oral candidiasis and identify predictive factors related to individuals' responses to Nystatin. The trial involved twenty participants who used 600,000 International Units/application of Nystatin oral rinse for seven days, four times a day, and were followed up at one week and three months after the rinse. The salivary and plaque microbiome of the participants were assessed via 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing. Overall, salivary and plaque microbiomes remained stable. However, amo

Primary Sjogren's Syndrome (SS) is an autoimmune disease characterized by dry eyes and dry mouth due to lymphocytic infiltration of lacrimal and salivary glands. Biopsies of their salivary glands provided an opportunity to characterize the phenotypic and functional properties of inflammatory site lymphocytes. We found that the salivary gland lymphocytes (SGL) of SS patients differed from the peripheral blood lymphocytes of the same patients because: a) SGL lacked lymphocytes reactive with anti-Leu-7 and anti-Leu-11 monoclonal antibodies; b) SGL lacked natural killer (NK) activity; and c) SGL l

The influence of cimetidine (400 mg) on the salivary pharmacokinetics of oral paracetamol (1 g) was studied in 8 healthy subjects under two protocols--concomitant and delayed administration of cimetidine. There were no significant changes in the salivary pharmacokinetics of paracetamol when the two drugs were concomitantly administered (P > 0.100). Delayed administration of paracetamol 1 h after cimetidine, on the other hand, was associated with significant changes as compared to control. The peak salivary concentration (Cmax) and absorption rate constant (Kab) were significantly reduced (P <

The constant ratio between saliva and plasma acetaminophen concentrations (S/P) during the elimination phase is assumed to result from the equilibrium established among the free-drug concentrations in the arterial blood, venous blood and saliva. Salivary secretion of acetaminophen is assumed to result from a passive diffusion of the drug to saliva from the blood that supplies the salivary glands. However, the constant S/P ratio during acetaminophen disposition and the finding that P-glycoprotein (P-gp), a protein recognized to pump substrates out of the cell, is expressed in duct cells of the

Mucocele is a common benign cyst pathology of minor salivary glands of the oral mucosa. The most common location for these lesions is the lower lip. It mainly occurs due to chronic trauma or habit of lip biting or sucking. Such parafunctional habits lead to the alteration of minor salivary glands and mucous accumulation. This case report presents a patient with lower lip mucocele resulting from a lip-sucking habit due to the presence of maxillary central incisor midline diastema. The mucocele removal was performed with a diode laser, and the midline diastema was closed with composite in order

Sialadenitis (Iodide Mumps) is a rare complication following the administration of iodinated contrast media. It is characterized by the painless bilateral enlargement of the submandibular salivary glands. The pathogenesis of this adverse reaction remains unclear. It may be due to an idiosyncratic reaction or related to toxic accumulation of iodide in the ductal systems of the salivary glands. Iodide mumps may occur after administration of any iodinated contrast agent: 98% of injected iodide is eliminated by the kidneys and only 2% is excreted from other organs such as salivary, sweat and lacri

Previous studies based on animal models demonstrated that N-acetylcysteine (NAC) prevents oxidative stress and improves salivary gland function when the NAC supplementation starts simultaneously with insulin resistance (IR) induction. This study is the first to evaluate the effect of a 4-week NAC supply on the antioxidant barrier and oxidative stress in Wistar rats after six weeks of high-fat diet (HFD) intake. Redox biomarkers were evaluated in the parotid (PG) and submandibular (SMG) salivary glands and stimulated whole saliva (SWS), as well as in the plasma and serum. We demonstrated that t

Followed by developing modern medicine, leeches did not have extensive use as before; however, in the late 19th century, they were still used in most countries all over the world. Thus far, leeches were utilized in treating various diseases like skin disorders, arthritis, and cancer. In Egypt, using leeches for treatment dates back to early 1500 BC. A medical leech's salivary glands involve over 100 bioactive proteins and the salivary gland secretion contains bacteriostatic, analgesic, and anticoagulation influences; with resolving activity, it causes microcirculation disorders elimination, re

Salivary pharmacokinetics provide a non-invasive alternative to blood sampling and are widely applied for the investigation of formulation performance and physiological processes such as gastric emptying. In this context, caffeine is an established salivary marker due to its robust and well characterised pharmacokinetic behaviour and low susceptibility to postprandial physiological changes, allowing its use under both fasted and fed conditions. Recently, methylliberine has been introduced as a novel salivary marker and shown to be suitable for the assessment of gastric emptying under fasted co

The clinical manifestations of oral reactions to the more commonly prescribed drugs have been presented. These reactions include the following conditions: stomatitis, ulceration and necrosis, opportunistic infections, hemorrhage, gingival hyperplasia, pigmentation, altered salivary function, and altered taste sensation. A patient who complains of any of these signs and symptoms should be thoroughly questioned regarding medication. If an offending drug can be identified, its alteration or elimination, in consultation with the prescribing clinician, will often result in resolution of the clinica
