Surgery for salivary gland tumors requires technical skill, competence in head and neck anatomy, and a familiarity with a variety of tumors. Benign salivary tumors at all sites should be 100 percent curable, with a local recurrence rate of less than five percent; these local failures should be curable with further surgery. The majority of parotid tumors are benign. Sixty-two percent of patients with malignant parotid tumors will be alive at five years, 54 percent at 10 years, and 47 percent at 15 years. These survival rates for malignant parotid tumors are better than those for malignant tumor

A case of solitary intraductal papilloma of a minor salivary gland is presented. The lesion was diagnosed clinically as a mucocele and has not recurred in 6 months of observation. This case is compared, on the basis of clinical data and histomorphologic findings, to three other known cases. Discussion is made of the role this lesion might play in the etiology of ductal obstruction, and the histologic findings of the intraductal papilloma of minor salivary glands and the solitary intraductal papilloma of the breast are compared.

OBJECTIVES: To explore a possible difference in the histology of the minor salivary glands in the peritonsillar space between patients with peritonsillar abscess, acute tonsillitis, or tonsillar hypertrophy. To compare if there were remnants of possible changes in elevated serum amylase and its isoenzymes between these three groups to clarify the ambiguous etiology of peritonsillar abscess.
METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study, in which we analyzed 75 tonsil and blood samples collected from patients with peritonsillar abscess, acute tonsillitis, or tonsillar hypertrophy prior to tonsillec

INTRODUCTION: Tumors of salivary glands are very rare in children overall, and rarely in minor salivary glands. Among them pleoomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common benign tumor of salivary glands in children and it acounts 60% of all salivary neoplasms, frequently found in major salivary glands (85 %) and rarely in minor salivary glands (10-15%). PA appears as painless oval mass, elastic consistency and smooth surface. It characterized by slow evolution of growing. The diagnosis can be confirmed only by histopathological features, after total excision of the lesion.

A case of an unusual oncocytic variant of minor salivary gland adenocarcinoma presenting in the base of the tongue in a 79 year old male with a remote history of regional radiotherapy is presented. The tumor had a striking morphologic similarity to the more common granular cell tumor, with which it could have been easily confused, leading to significant misdiagnosis. The light microscopic, cytologic, immunohistochemical and electron microscopic features are presented, with a discussion of the differentiating features of this lesion compared to other more common benign and malignant glossal tum

OBJECTIVE: To systematically review available data regarding adenomatoid hyperplasia of minor salivary glands (AHMSG).
STUDY DESIGN: Electronic searches were performed in six databases and gray literature. The risk of bias was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute tool.
RESULTS: Forty studies reporting 121 cases of AHMSG were included. There is a male predominance (n = 72/64.29%), with individuals in their fourth and fifth decade of life being the most affected. The palate was the main anatomical location (n = 90/74.39%), and most lesions presented as single, asymptomatic nodules. The m

Minor salivary glands can usually be found along the mucous membrane of the upper aerodigestive tract. Their presence in the peritonsillar space was of little interest until it was postulated that infection of Weber's gland (minor salivary gland at the superior pole of the peritonsillar space) might be the possible cause of peritonsillar abscess. This study was designed to examine the distribution of minor salivary glands in the peritonsillar space and their role in pathogenesis of peritonsillar abscess. Tonsillectomy specimens from fifty-five patients who were suffering from repeated tonsilli

Histochemical, immunohistochemical and histomorphometrical changes in sialadenitis have been studied on 33 biopsies of labial salivary glands (LSG) from patients with primary Sjogren's syndrome. The control group consisted of 10 biopsies from persons without oral cavity inflammatory diseases. A direct relation was established between xerostomia stage and the degree of LSG parenchyma substitution for the inflammatory cell infiltrate. Dependence of LSG tissue damage on local immunopathologic reaction was detected. With a highly active inflammatory reaction the changes were characterized by cellu

BACKGROUND: Sialoblastoma is a rare malignant epithelial tumor of the salivary glands, predominantly affecting children, with approximately 60 cases reported in the literature. It most commonly involves the parotid gland but may also arise from the submandibular and minor salivary glands. Clinically, it usually presents as a painless mass, with metastatic potential being uncommon.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 9-year-old girl, otherwise in good general health, presenting with a painless solid mass in the buccal mucosa. Diagnostic evaluation included fine-needle aspiration, incisi

Minor salivary gland granuloma is rare in tuberculosis. We present a case of labial minor salivary gland granulomas occurring in the course of tuberculosis along with skin, mediastinal and liver granulomas. The patient (46-year-old man) presented with asthenia, nocturne transpiration, weight loss and compressive thoracic adenopathies. The angiotensin I converting enzyme was elevated as well as calcemia. The QuantiFERON test and culture of a mediastinal specimen were positive for Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Multinucleated-cell-granulomas (focally with necrosis) were identified on skin, mediasti

Salivary gland tumors have a high incidence (90%) within the parotid gland. The acinic cell carcinoma (ACC) represents only 1-3% of the salivary gland tumors, most frequently affecting the parotid. The minor salivary glands rarely develop ACC and when the ACC is localized in these glands, generally, it has a less aggressive evolution. The main criterion in the diagnostic of ACC is the histological examination with the regular Hematoxylin-Eosin (HE) staining and additionally Periodic Acid-Schiff (PAS) special staining. Immunohistochemical (IHC) examination confirms the origin of the tumor cells

PURPOSE: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare malignant tumor originating from the salivary glands. The characteristic clinicopathologic features of this tumor are perineural spread, local recurrences, and distant metastases. Radical surgery combined with radiotherapy, as mentioned in the literature, is the best method of treatment. This clinical review article is intended to analyze the outcome of management of a group of 22 ACC patients, who were treated in our clinic.
METHODS: Between 1985 and 2000, 22 patients with ACC of minor salivary glands were treated in the Clinic of Oral and Ma

In patients affected by alimentary disorders sialadenosis is frequently observed. This non-inflammatory condition is described to affect major salivary glands, leading to the characteristic parotid and/or submandibular swelling. Thus fine-needle aspiration cytology or parotid open biopsy are generally required to diagnose histologically the disorder. We report the case of a 28-year-old patient affected by bulimia/anorexia nervosa who presented, in addition to parotid enlargement, a bilateral symmetric painless soft swelling of the hard palate. The lesion was biopsied and histopathological exam

A parapharingeal mass of exceptional dimension was observed at our Institution. We report our procedure in order to define the origin of the mass, its anatomopathological caracteristics and the procedure of exereses. The mass originating from minor salivary glands, is reported in Literature for its large dimension, which is rare in absolute and for its particular origin.
