[A rare outbreak of food poisoning caused by Salmonella enterica serovar. Oranienburg--a case report and features of isolates].

A rare food poisoning outbreak caused by S. Oranienburg occurred at a junior high school athletic meet in Kurashiki, Okayama, in September 2005. The 70 patients included junior high school students, teachers and other school staff, and their families. This bacillus was isolated from stools of two employees and another in catered sandwiches. The cause of the outbreak was determined by evidence and epidemiological investigation to be sandwiches served at the athletic meet. Biochemical features, sensitivity to 12 antibacterial agents, and DNA patterns determined by pulse field gel electrophoresis

[Salmonella food poisoning treated at the Infectious Disease Clinic, Institute of Internal Medicine, Medical Academy, in Cracow 1983-1986].

In the years 1983-1986 in the Department of Infectious Diseases Medical Academy in Cracow 189 adult patients were treated for salmonellosis. A significant rise was noted in the number of cases in recent years. The most frequent pathogen was Salmonella enteritidis. The clinical pattern of salmonellosis was similar to that described in preceding years. The disease was associated with increased urea level and decreased sodium level in serum, appearance of young cell forms in white blood cell count, and acetonuria. Most convalescents were discharged with positive results of stool cultures.

A case report of intestinal myiasis.

A case of mixed infection of Salmonella (type C2) and Parasarcophaga crassipalpis (an intestinal myiasis) in a two-year-old girl is reported. A girl after dining in a restaurant developed typical Salmonella food-poisoning symptoms. Stool culture showed both Salmonella and fly larvae. This paper is to report a first case of this fly larvae infection and to review the recent trends of food-poisoning in Japan.

[Rapid simultaneous detection of Salmonella and Shigella using modified molecular beacons and real-time PCR].

OBJECTIVE: Dual detection of Salmonella and Shigella using modified molecular beacons and real-time PCR was developed. The established method was applied to rapid diagnosis of Salmonella and Shigella' food poisoning, and for routine monitoring programs. METHODS: Two sets of primers were designed based on the core sequence of invA gene and ssaR gene published on GenBank to detect Salmonella, and ipaH gene were selected to detect Shigella. Three corresponding modified molecular beacons labeled with different fluorophors were designed. The molecular beacons and primer sets were tested against nu

The incidence rate of bacterial food poisonings in the Lublin province in the years 1976-1998.

The aim of the paper was to analyse the bacterial poisonings in the Lublin province in the years 1976-1998. The analysis was based on the archive materials of the Regional Unit for Control of Epidemics and Hygiene Promotion in Lublin. To illustrate the discussed issues the exemplifying bacterial food poisonings in closed mass nutrition institutions in 1990 were examined. The studies revealed that the bacterial food poisonings were most frequently caused by Salmonella enteritidis and one of the basic carriers was the food prepared from animal-derived materials. The incidence of Salmonella infec

The relationship between infecting dose and severity of disease in reported outbreaks of Salmonella infections.

The relationship between size of the infecting dose and severity of the resulting disease has been investigated for salmonella infections by reanalysis of data within epidemics for 32 outbreaks, and comparing data between outbreaks for 68 typhoid epidemics and 49 food-poisoning outbreaks due to salmonellas. Attack rate, incubation period, amount of infected food consumed and type of vehicle are used as proxy measures of infecting dose, while case fatality rates for typhoid and case hospitalization rates for food poisoning salmonellas were used to assess severity. Limitations of the data are di

Foodborne disease surveillance in England and Wales: 1989-1991.

This review summarises reports of food poisoning, salmonellosis, campylobacteriosis and other acute foodborne illness to the PHLS Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre, and notifications of food poisoning collated by the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys, in the period 1989-1991. During this period there were continuing rises in notifications of food poisoning and reports of salmonellosis and campylobacteriosis. There was considerable success in the control of foodborne listeriosis. Newly emerging pathogens, such as Vero cytotoxin producing Escherichia coli, became more important. T

Analysis of Suspected Food Poisoning Incidents in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: An Epidemiological Perspective.

Foodborne diseases (FBDs) pose significant challenges to public health and the food industry worldwide, including Saudi Arabia, where rapid urbanization, changes in dietary habits, and a growing food service sector have increased the risk of contamination. As a result, this study analyzed bacterial contamination in food samples from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and investigated food poisoning outbreaks in the city. A total of 7897 food samples and swabs collected between 2015 and 2018 were analyzed for coliforms, Salmonella, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus cereus. Clinical data on food poisoning

Microbial food borne pathogens. Salmonella.

All food animals are susceptible to infection with Salmonella, a genus of gram negative, nonspore-forming, usually motile, facultative anaer … monella and serve as sources of infection to humans and other animals. Apart from being a source of Salmonella food poisoning for humans, Salmonella-contaminated food animal carcasses are also a concern because they are a source of antibiotic-resistant Salmonella.

Salmonella enterica serovar Ohio septic arthritis and bone abscess in an immunocompetent patient: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Non-typhi Salmonella species cause severe extra-intestinal focal infection after occult bacteremia. Although the number of cases of non-typhi salmonellosis is increasing worldwide among patients with immunocompromising conditions such as human immunodeficiency virus infection, infection is uncommon in immunocompetent subjects. We report a case of septic arthritis and bone abscess due to a rare non-typhi Salmonella organism that developed after a prolonged asymptomatic period. CASE PRESENTATION: A 44-year-old Japanese immunocompetent man presented with acute-onset left knee pain

Fresh vegetables and fruit as a source of Salmonella bacteria.

INTRODUCTION: Increased consumer awareness of the health aspects of the diet has influenced the increased consumption of fruit and vegetables. Due to the fact that these products are mainly consumed raw and are usually not subjected to processes that reduce their microbiological contamination, they become a source of infection and transmit pathogens causing food poisoning in humans. Salmonella bacteria are a serious treat to human health and remain a serious problem in many parts of the world. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to review the current state of knowledge regarding the prevalen

[The risk of transmission of salmonellae in poultry farming: detection and prevention in Europe].

While salmonellas can cause disease problems among poultry, they remain essentially a concern for public health, as a cause of outbreaks of food poisoning. The principal site of multiplication of these bacteria is the digestive tract, particularly the caecum, which may result in widespread contamination of the environment. The pathogenicity of salmonellas depends on the invasive properties and the ability of the bacteria to survive and multiply within cells, particularly macrophages. These properties are the source of vertical transmission which, in the case of survival of the embryo, can resu

Food poisoning in hospitals in Scotland.

A review of 50 hospital-based outbreaks of food poisoning which were reported in Scotland during 1973--7, is described. At least 1530 persons consuming hospital-prepared food were involved. Thirty-one episodes were associated with Clostridium perfringens (C. welchii), 11 were due to food-borne salmonella infection, three to enterotoxigenic Staphylococcus aureus, and five incidents were of undetermined aetiology. This differs noticeably from the experience in England and Wales where salmonellas appear to predominate as the main cause of hospital outbreaks. Twenty-two incidents occurred in hospi
