We describe a case of Reiter's disease in an HLA-B27 positive black woman after infection with Salmonella typhimurium. Although reactive arthropathy following Salmonella infections is not unusual, Reiter's disease is rare. This may be the second such case in the English literature, and the first reported in North America.

The genus Salmonella, particularly Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovars Choleraesuis and Typhimurium, poses significant challenges to swine production and leads to economic losses from conditions such as septicemia and enterocolitis. We evaluated the effects of experimental infection with Salmonella Typhimurium on clinical signs and anatomopathologic outcomes in pigs. Twenty 90-d-old pigs were divided into 2 groups: G1 received an oral inoculum of 108 cfu of Salmonella Typhimurium; G2 served as a control. Pigs were monitored clinically for 30 d; postmortem examinations and microbiologi…

Enteric pathogens engage in complex interactions with the host and the resident microbiota to establish gut colonization1-3. Although mechanistic interactions between enteric pathogens and bacterial commensals have been extensively studied, whether and how commensal fungi affect enteric infections remain largely unknown1. Here we show that colonization with the common human gut commensal fungus Candida albicans worsened infections with the enteric pathogen Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhimurium. The presence of C. albicans in the mouse gut increased Salmonella caecal colonizat

BACKGROUND: In most patients, infection with a non-typhoid Salmonella species usually results in self-limiting gastroenteritis. Severe complications such as bacteraemia and extra-abdominal infections are most often attributed to typhoid subspecies like S. typhi and S. paratyphi. In this article, we present the case of a healthy patient with non-typhoid salmonellosis who nevertheless developed severe complications.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 63-year-old man with an unremarkable medical history presented at the emergency department with abdominal complaints suggestive of gastroenteritis. Cultures of f

The first report of a case of chronic sputum carriage of salmonella is presented. The patient was a 51-year-old male with pulmonary cavitation and mycetoma, who developed pulmonary infection with Salmonella typhimurium after rectal surgery, and subsequently has carried the salmonella in his sputum for 18 months to date.

Salmonella enterica and coccidia (Eimeria spp.) are important intestinal pathogens in broiler production. Salmonella has high zoonotic potential, and coccidia are responsible for large economic losses. Live vaccines reduce shedding of Salmonella and minimize the impact of coccidial infections on broiler performance. This study investigated the interaction between both vaccines on the intestinal health of broilers. The 2 × 2 experimental design included vaccination against Salmonella Typhimurium (ST) (no vaccination or vaccination on day 14) and vaccination against coccidiosis (no vaccination o…

The emergence of multi-drug resistance (MDR) poses a huge risk to public health globally. Yet these recalcitrant pathogens continue to rise … reviously, our laboratory demonstrated that Cannabidiol (CBD) is an effective antimicrobial against Salmonella typhimurium (S. typhimurium). However, we observed resistance development over time. To understand the mechanisms S. typhimurium uses to develop resistance to CBD, we studied the abundance of bacteria lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and membrane sterols of both CBD-su …

The bacterial pathogen Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium is one of the most common causes of foodborne disease in humans and is also an important model system for bacterial pathogenesis. Oral inoculation of C57Bl/6 mice, which are genetically susceptible to Salmonella, results in systemic infection but the murine intestine is not efficiently colonized unless the intestinal microbiota is disrupted. Pretreatment of C57Bl/6 mice with streptomycin, followed by oral inoculation with Salmonella Typhimurium results in colitis resembling human intestinal Salmonellosis. The predominant method of …

BACKGROUND: Non-typhoid Salmonella extra-intestinal infections usually develop in infants and in adult patients with pre-existing predisposing conditions. Blood stream infections and urinary tract infections are the most common clinical presentations, but other sites of infection may be involved as well.

A profusion of proteins with heterologous serological specificities was synthesized by S. typhimurium grown on artificial media; accordingly, sera prepared in rabbits with these proteins displayed an abundance of antibodies reacting, in agar gel, against numerous heterologous proteins. the absorption of the sera with different Enterobacterial proteins proved that the S. typhimurium proteins are a mixture of specific proteins, and common E. coli and Salmonellae determinants; in addition, a group of strongly cross-precipitating proteins common to S. typhimurium and S. choleraesuis and to S. typh

Active protection to challenge with 100 LD50 of Salmonella typhimurium could be induced in white mice by inoculation with 10(3) live bacteria (0.1 LD50) or 10(8) heat killed bacteria (56 degrees C for 30 min), or 20 gamma ribosomal fraction. Passive protection could be given by antisera taken from hyperimmune rabbits inoculated with either the heat killed bacteria or by the ribosomal fraction. No direct correlation between antibody titre to 'O' antigen and degree of protection was observed. Absorption of any antisera with 'O' antigen decreases its protective power. The protective antibodies co…

An 8-month-old neutered male outdoor cat was brought to our surgical center for a sudden onset of diarrhea, pyrexia, and lethargy. Physical examination revealed a loud left parasternal systolic murmur with no thrill. An echocardiogram showed a large hyperechoic vegetation (about 9 mm thick) on the aortic valve leaflets. The results of Doppler ultrasound examination were compatible with severe aortic stenosis. A singular urine culture test performed by cystocentesis samples enabled the isolation of more than 105 CFU/ml in a pure culture of Salmonella typhimurium. Enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes…

Salmonella is one of the most frequent causes of food borne infectious disease. Among nearly 2500 documented serotypes are reported, Salmonella Typhimurium is the number one serotype associated with salmonellosis worldwide. Many different methods have been developed for the detection and quantification of S. typhimurium. Most of these assays are usually expensive, time consuming and require difficult sample preparation steps. Therefore, it is necessary to develop rapid, robust, cost-effective and sensitive alternative detection methods. In the last years, aptasensors, used for detection of S. …
