A new method for regionalization of the vertebral column in salmonids based on radiographic hallmarks.

Current procedures to establish vertebral column regionalization (e.g., histology) in fish are time consuming and difficult to apply. The aim of this study was to develop a more rapid and accurate radiology-based method for Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). A detailed analysis of 90 animals (4 kg) led to the establishment of region-specific radiographic hallmarks. To elucidate its transferability to other salmonid species, radiography was carried out in brown trout (Salmo trutta), Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus), rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha), and Chin

Redescription of Proteocephalus fallax La Rue, 1911 (Cestoda) and a list of proteocephalid tapeworms of whitefish (Coregonus spp.).

Tapeworms of the genus Proteocephalus Weinland, 1858 (Cestoda: Proteocephalidae) are common and widespread intestinal parasites of whitefish (Coregonus spp., Salmonidae: Coregoninae). Previous taxonomic studies, based solely on morphology and inconsistently fixed specimens, concluded that all salmoniform fish, including whitefish, are parasitised by a single euryxenous and highly polymorphic species, Proteocephalus longicollis (Zeder, 1800). However, recent molecular phylogenetic analyses have revealed the existence of several species specific to individual genera or even species of salmonifor

Peripheral and central regulation of thyroid status in teleost fish with particular reference to tetraploid juvenile salmonids and parr-smolt transformation.

Mammalian thyroid status is governed by thyroid secretion of L-thyroxine (T4) as a prohormone that is monodeiodinated in peripheral tissues to bioactive T3 (3,5,3'-triiodo-l-thyronine). T4 secretion is controlled by the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis (central control) whereas T3 availability to target cells depends mainly on mechanisms in extrathyroidal tissues such as cellular transport and deiodination (peripheral control). Does this model apply to poikilothermic teleost fish which in contrast to homeothermic mammals may show major surges in plasma T4 due to season, feeding, repro

Acute warming in winter eliminates chemical alarm responses in threatened Qinling lenok Brachymystax lenok tsinlingensis.

Knowledge of how temperature influences animal behavior is critical to understanding and predicting impacts of changing climate on individual species and biotic interactions. However, the effects of climate change, especially winter warming in freshwater systems, on fish behaviors and the use of chemical information have been largely unexplored. Qinling lenok Brachymystax lenok tsinlingensis, an endangered salmonid species endemic to the Qinling Mountain Range, China, is currently experiencing population decline and is a potential biological indicator of warming winter climate effects on fresh

Kinetics of trypsin from rainbow trout are not influenced by level of feeding.

1. Specific activity and kinetic constants of trypsin from the pyloric caeca of rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) were measured. 2. Although one group was fed more than twice as much as the other (1.8 compared to 0.7% body weight per day), there were no significant differences in the weight of the pyloric caeca, specific activity of trypsin, or kinetic constants (apparent Km or Vmax) between the two groups. 3. The caecum of trout contains enough trypsin to digest all of the protein in a typical meal in less than 5 hr.

Nitrogen oxides elicit antipredator responses in juvenile channel catfish, but not in convict cichlids or rainbow trout: conservation of the ostariophysan alarm pheromone.

Recent studies with cyprinid and characin (superorder Ostariophysi) fishes suggest that purine-N-oxides function as chemical alarm cues (alarm pheromones) and that the nitrogen oxide functional group acts as the chief molecular trigger. To further test the hypothesis that the nitrogen-oxide functional group is evolutionarily conserved as an active component of the Ostariophysan alarm pheromone system, we exposed juvenile channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus, Siluriformes) to conspecific skin extract, hypoxanthine-3-N-oxide (the putative alarm pheromone) and a suite of structurally and function

Evolutionary and ecological correlates of thiaminase in fishes.

Thiamine (vitamin B1) is required by all living organisms in multiple metabolic pathways. It is scarce in natural systems, and deficiency can lead to reproductive failure, neurological issues, and death. One major cause of thiamine deficiency is an overreliance on diet items containing the enzyme thiaminase. Thiaminase activity has been noted in many prey fishes and linked to cohort failure in salmonid predators that eat prey fish with thiaminase activity, yet it is generally unknown whether evolutionary history, fish traits, and/or environmental conditions lead to production of thiaminase. We

Genome assembly, structural variants, and genetic differentiation between lake whitefish young species pairs (Coregonus sp.) with long and short reads.

Nascent pairs of ecologically differentiated species offer an opportunity to get a better glimpse at the genetic architecture of speciation. Of particular interest is our recent ability to consider a wider range of genomic variants, not only single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), thanks to long-read sequencing technology. We can now identify structural variants (SVs) such as insertions, deletions and other rearrangements, allowing further insights into the genetic architecture of speciation and how different types of variants are involved in species differentiation. Here, we investigated geno

Natural toxic impact and thyroid signalling interplay orchestrates riverine adaptive divergence of salmonid fish.

Adaptive radiation in fishes has been actively investigated over the last decades. Along with numerous well-studied cases of lacustrine radiation, some examples of riverine sympatric divergence have been recently discovered. In contrast to the lakes, the riverine conditions do not provide evident stability in the ecological gradients. Consequently, external factors triggering the radiation, as well as developmental mechanisms underpinning it, remain unclear. Herein, we present the comprehensive study of external and internal drivers of the riverine adaptive divergence of the salmonid fish Salv

Comparison of mercury and methylmercury in northern pike and Arctic grayling from western Alaska rivers.

In western Alaska, mercury (Hg) could be a potential health risk to people whose diet is primarily fish-based. In 2000, total Hg (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) were examined in northern pike (Esox lucius) and Arctic grayling (Thymallus arcticus) from two watersheds in western Alaska, the Yukon and Kuskokwim rivers. Whitefish (Coregonus sp.) were also examined from the Kuskokwim River. Pike from the Yukon and Kuskokwim rivers had mean concentrations of THg in muscle of 1.506 and 0.628 mg/kg wet wt, respectively. The mean concentrations of THg in grayling muscle from these rivers were 0.264 and

Non-migratory lineages experience higher diversification rates: global evidence from salmonid fishes.

Biologists have long sought to understand the forces driving speciation. Contrasts in dispersal ability (e.g., migration) are hypothesized to influence rates of lineage diversification. However, past inferences of migration-diversification relationships have been contradictory, suggesting the need for further investigation and more nuanced explanations. Here, we test for a relationship between diadromy (marine-freshwater migration) and diversification in salmonids, a dominant group of fishes native across the temperate Northern Hemisphere. We reconstruct a molecular phylogeny comprising 140 sp

Mucosal defences of salmonids in complex RAS environments.

Defences at mucosal sites play a critical role in forming robust primary barriers of fish. Because of their close contact with the aquatic environment, these mucosal immune structures and mechanisms are under constant pressure from environmental challenges, especially in intensive aquaculture systems. As recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) become more widely adopted, there is increasing interest in understanding how these controlled, complex, land-based environments affect mucosal defences in cultured species, particularly salmonids. Modern intensive RAS are highly intricate systems charac

Using a mechanistic framework to model the density of an aquatic parasite Ceratonova shasta.

Ceratonova shasta is a myxozoan parasite endemic to the Pacific Northwest of North America that is linked to low survival rates of juvenile salmonids in some watersheds such as the Klamath River basin. The density of C. shasta actinospores in the water column is typically highest in the spring (March-June), and directly influences infection rates for outmigrating juvenile salmonids. Current management approaches require quantities of C. shasta density to assess disease risk and estimate survival of juvenile salmonids. Therefore, we developed a model to simulate the density of waterborne C. sha

Chronic cyanide poisoning of rainbow trout and its effects on growth, respiration, and liver histopathology.

Cyanide markedly affected growth and resting metabolic rate while causing degenerative hepatic necrosis in juvenile rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri, Richardson). This was revealed during two experiments performed in continuously renewed water at 12.5 degree C with fish fed a restricted artificial diet and exposed to assayed cyanide concentrations of 0.00, 0.01, 0.02, or 0.03 mg/L hydrogen cyanide (HCN) for 18 days. At 0.02 and 0.03 mg/L, HCN growth was reduced by 40 to 95% after 18 days. At all concentrations, cyanide caused a severe initial repression of specific growth rate, followed by a hig

An outbreak of phaeohyphomycosis in rainbow trout caused by Scolecobasidium humicola.

A previously undescribed host for the opportunistic dematiaceous hyphomycete, Scolecobasidium humicola, is reported. Several epizootics among rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri, occurred in a Tennessee fish hatchery from 1969 to 1973. Symptoms included surface lesions, blisters and abscesses. The kidneys and other internal organs were invaded by the mycelium of S. humicola. Tissue morphology of the fungus was typical of that associated with phaeohyphomycosis Experimental infections were reproduced in fingerling rainbow trout after intraperitoneal inoculation of S. humicola.
