BACKGROUND: AA amyloidosis due to subcutaneous injection of drugs of abuse has been described in the USA, but all the existing literature is from more than 20 years ago. There is more recent literature from Europe. We have observed a high incidence of AA amyloidosis in the county hospital in San Francisco.

A total of 1,101 patients was studied for the incidence and distribution of dermatophytes in the San Francisco Bay Area from 1974 to 1978. 267 dermatophytes were isolated and identified. Trichophyton rubrum and Trichophyton tonsurans were the most prevalent dermatophytes. T. rubrum caused 83% of tinea pedis, 82% of tinea unguium, 80% of tinea manuum and 66% of tinea cruris. T. tonsurans was the major cause of tinea capitis (60%) followed by Microsporum canis. Microsporum audouinii was not encountered in this survey.

BACKGROUND: Previous school-based studies in cities with a high prevalence of chlamydia found a substantial prevalence of chlamydial infection among students.
GOAL: The goal was to determine the feasibility and acceptability of chlamydia and gonorrhea screening in San Francisco high schools.

Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) and plasmid analyses were used to evaluate an outbreak of Haemophilus ducreyi in San Francisco. Fifty-four cases of culture-confirmed chancroid occurred between May 1989 and May 1991. Of these, 46 (96%) were in men and 35 (65%) were in blacks; the median age of patients was 34 years. To investigate the epidemiology and clinical spectrum of neurosyphilis in a population with high rates of coexisting syphilis and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, a retrospective analysis of cases in all San Francisco hospitals from 1985 to 1992 was conducted. The prevalence of enteric protozoa was studied in a survey conducted among 150 male homosexual patients in San Francisco. All patients were from a private practice in internal medicine. Each was asked to complete a questionnaire and to submit multiple stool specimens for examination.
