[Helicobacter pylori and gastric cancer].

Several unresolved issues still cast doubts on the epidemiological data which point to an association between infection from Helicobacter pylori (Hp) and gastric cancer. These are: a) the male/female ratio of gastric cancer ranges from 4 to 1.5 in all studies, whereas the prevalence of Hp infection is the same in both sexes; b) the prevalence of Hp infection is as high as 90% in several developing countries where the frequency of gastric cancer is very low; c) the acquisition of the infection at a young age, considered very important with regard to the risk for cancer, varies from 4.2% to 83%

Exposure to heat waves and drought improves subsequent leaf heat tolerance for five oak species in southern California.

PREMISE: Given the threats of climate change, we investigated the impact of high temperatures separately and in combination with reduced soil water on leaf heat tolerance for five oaks (Fagaceae) with overlapping ranges in southern California, USA: Quercus agrifolia and Q. chrysolepis (evergreen species), Q. douglasii and Q. lobata (winter-deciduous), and Q. engelmannii (drought-deciduous). METHODS: Leaf heat tolerance was measured in two seasons for Q. agrifolia and Q. engelmannii at the Huntington Botanical Gardens, San Marino, California and for container-grown saplings of three other oak

Global burden and future trends in psoriasis epidemiology: insights from the global burden of disease study 2019 and predictions to 2030.

BACKGROUND: Millions of people worldwide are affected by psoriasis, one of the most prevalent skin conditions. Currently, there is a lack of high-quality epidemiological reports on psoriasis. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to reveal trends in psoriasis epidemiology in 1990-2019. METHODS: Using data from the GBD study 2019, we examined psoriasis epidemiology globally and across regions defined by the social-demographic index (SDI). Trends in incidence, prevalence, and disability-adjusted life year (DALY) rates were assessed using estimated annual percentage changes (EAPC)s. Age-period-cohort ana

Indexing Healthcare Access and Quality for Surgically Amenable Causes of Death: A Global Analysis of 204 Countries and Territories in 2019.

BACKGROUND: We analyzed the healthcare access and quality (HAQ) index for surgically amenable causes, its progress since 1990, and the gap compared to non-surgical HAQ across 204 countries and territories in 2019 for children (up to 14 years) and overall populations. METHODS: The Global Burden of Disease 2019 study provided mortality-to-incidence ratios and risk-standardized death rates for 32 causes with preventable mortality. Of these, 14 (18) and 9 (17) causes were considered surgical (non-surgical) for the overall population and children, respectively. We constructed composite indices ran

Evolving strategies for meningococcal vaccination in Europe: Overview and key determinants for current and future considerations.

Invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) is a life-threatening, unpredictable condition. Vaccines are available against 5 of the 6 meningococcal serogroups (Men) accounting for nearly all IMD cases worldwide; conjugate monovalent MenC, quadrivalent MenACWY, and protein-based MenB vaccines are commonly used. We provide a comprehensive overview of the evolution of meningococcal vaccination strategies employed in national immunization programmes (NIPs) and their impact on IMD incidence in Europe. A more in-depth description is given for several countries: the United Kingdom (UK), the Netherlands, Gre

Changes in tobacco use patterns among students aged 13-15 years in 13 countries: Global Youth Tobacco Survey, 2013-2023.

BACKGROUND: While cigarettes remain the most common form of tobacco product used, the global tobacco landscape is changing with the introduction and marketing of newer products. METHODS: We examined the latest two waves of Global Youth Tobacco Survey data from 13 countries that implemented the survey between 2013 and 2023 to assess changes in exclusive, dual and poly-tobacco product use over time among students aged 13-15 years. Current tobacco use, defined as using any form of tobacco in the past 30 days, was categorised into six mutually exclusive variables: exclusive smoked tobacco, exclus

Analgesic, antiulcer, antithrombotic drugs and organ damage: a population-based case-control study.

AIM: Oral medication is of paramount importance for pain treatment. Analgesics, antiulcer (AUDs) and antithrombotic drugs (ATDs) are often coprescribed in elderly people. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) require AUDs to lower the risk of peptic ulcer, and potentially interfere with ATDs. The aim of this study was to quantify the prevalence of NSAID use in patients with gastrointestinal, cardiac or kidney damage in the year 2013, compared to the general population. METHODS: We performed a population-based case-control study in the Republic of San Marino to evaluate the Odds-Ratio

Childhood overweight and obesity abatement policies in Europe.

Over the past two decades, a concerted effort to combat the rising tide of childhood overweight and obesity has taken shape. The World Health Organization (WHO) Commission on Ending Childhood Obesity (ECHO) provides recommendations for six priority areas of action, including the promotion of healthy food consumption, promotion of physical activity, preconception and pregnancy care, early childhood diet and physical activity, healthy nutrition and physical activity for school-aged children, and community-based weight management. This paper provides a snapshot of policies and measures aligned to

The veteran population: one at high risk for sleep-disordered breathing.

Sleep complaints are very common among the general population and are usually accompanied by significant medical, psychological and social disturbances (Redline S, Strohl K, Otolaryngol Clin North Am, 132:303, 1999). A higher prevalence of sleep complaints has been described in the elderly (Vgontzas AN, Kales A, Annu Rev Med, 50:387-400, 1999). It is manifested by breathing disturbances during sleep, loud snoring, difficulties maintaining sleep, fatigue, daytime sleepiness, mood effects and impairment of daily activities (Lugaresi E, Cirignotta F, Zucconi M et al., Good and poor sleepers: an e

Predictors of cord blood unit cell content in a volume unrestricted large series collections: a chance for a fast and cheap multiparameter selection model.

BACKGROUND: Cord blood plays a very important role in stem cell transplantation and therapy with an emerging implication also in regenerative medicine. The number of cells available in a single cord blood unit (CBU), in particular, the CD34+ and total nucleated cell (TNC) content influences the transplantation clinical outcome. We analysed a very large series of CBUs, collected for private banking without any specific volume restriction, to deeply investigate the best predictors of cord blood stem cells content. METHODS: Maternal and neonatal clinic laboratory data of a total 2583 UCBs were o

Hepatitis B: vaccination programmes in Europe--an update.

In the eight years since the Global Advisory Group of the Expanded Program on Immunisation set 1997 as the target for integrating hepatitis B (HB) vaccination into national immunisation programs world-wide, more than 116 countries have included HB vaccine as part of their routine infant or adolescent immunisation programs. Meanwhile, many countries have performed economic evaluation studies, while others have initiated sero-epidemiological studies to generate input data for burden of disease calculation. These studies have indicated that epidemiological and economic arguments cannot be used to

DANCE Rehabilitation EXperience (DANCEREX-DTx): Protocol for a randomized controlled trial on effectiveness of digital therapeutics in chronic neurological disabilities.

OBJECTIVE: Rehabilitation is an important player in preventing and reducing the high impact of disability on everyday functioning in chronic neurological diseases (CNDs), especially if timely, intensive, and multidimensional. However, to date, rehabilitation is often a service accessible only to a few people, and the issue of a progressive decrease in treatment adherence still remains to be addressed. This study protocol describes an RCT whose aim is to test the effectiveness in terms of adherence of DANCE Rehabilitation EXperience (DANCEREX-DTx), a new digital therapeutic solution which combi

The Acidic Microenvironment: Is It a Phenotype of All Cancers? A Focus on Multiple Myeloma and Some Analogies with Diabetes Mellitus.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a hematological malignancy with a poor prognosis while with a long and progressive outcome. To date, the therapeutic options are restricted to few drugs, including thalidomide or its derivates and autologous transplantation including stem-cell transplantation. More recently, the use of both proteasome inhibitors and monoclonal antibodies have been included in MM therapy, but the clinical results are still under evaluation. Unfortunately, death rates (within the 5-year overall survival rates) are still very high (45%), with no relevant improvement over the past 10 years
