Haematology, physiological parameters, morphometry and parasitological status of rescued bearded capuchin monkeys (Sapajus libidinosus).

BACKGROUND: There are few studies on the physiology and haematology of rescued bearded capuchin monkeys. These are necessary to better understand the health and welfare status of the animals, including when performing reintroductions, and to avoid zoonoses. METHODS: We aimed to obtain physiological and haematological values, morphometry and parasitological status of 26 bearded capuchins in two rescue centres in Northeast Brazil. RESULTS: We found sex- and age-related differences in respiratory rate, body weight and body mass index, but not haematology. The haematological values obtained were

Stone throwing as a sexual display in wild female bearded capuchin monkeys, Sapajus libidinosus.

Capuchin monkeys (Sapajus spp.) in captive settings frequently manipulate and throw objects. In the wild, they may push or drop stones and sticks toward targets during inter- or intraspecific threat displays. In addition, female capuchin monkeys exhibit a broad repertoire of behaviors during their proceptive period, including facial expressions, vocalizations, stereotyped body postures, and touch-and-run behavior. This study reports stone throwing as a newly-described communicative behavior during the proceptive display of females in a group of bearded capuchin monkeys (S. libidinosus) in Serr

Behavioral and genetic color vision evaluation of an albino male capuchin monkey (Sapajus apella).

Albinism is a rare phenotype that affects the pigmentation in eyes, hair, and skin. The effects of albinism in color vision are still unclear. Our study aimed to evaluate the color vision phenotype and genotype of an albino capuchin monkey. An adult albino male capuchin monkey (Sapajus apella) had the L and M opsin gene analyzed, and was trained in a behavioral task of color discrimination. Color discrimination thresholds were determined along 20 chromatic axes around the background chromaticity. A color discrimination ellipse was drawn by interpolation among these thresholds. The albino monke

Analysis of the in vitro response of the Sapajus cay (Primates: Platyrrhini) genome to exposure to the radiomimetic bleomycin.

Bleomycin (BLM) is an antitumor and antibiotic agent widely used as a positive control in genotoxicity assays due to its ability to induce mutagenic effects across multiple organisms. In mammalian cells, BLM causes chromosomal damage, affecting both chromatids and chromosomes, including complex aberrations involving multiple chromosomes. A key question arises regarding the response to BLM-induced genotoxic stress in genomes with pronounced structural differences from the human genome, which may influence genomic stability. The Sapajus genus (Cebidae, Platyrrhini) is notable for its genome, whi

Trachea and lung anatomy applied to clinical and surgical procedures in Sapajus libidinosus (Spix, 1823).

BACKGROUND: The objective of the present study was to study the anatomy of the respiratory system of Sapajus libidinosus. METHODS: Ten corpses of adult animals were used. To analyze the bronchial tree, transparent acetic silicone was injected and then dissected. RESULTS: The trachea presented a mean of 32 rings. These spaces were delimited for tracheostomy and tracheotomy between the 1st and 3rd ring or between the 9th and 11th ring, and for thoracocentesis at the 7th or 8th intercostal space. For tracheostomy and tracheotomy, the best access point was in the ventral region of the neck and t

Food or threat? Wild capuchin monkeys (Sapajus libidinosus) as both predators and prey of snakes.

Snakes present a hazard to primates, both as active predators and by defensive envenomation. This risk might have been a selective pressure on the evolution of primate visual and cognitive systems, leading to several behavioral traits present in human and non-human primates, such as the ability to quickly learn to fear snakes. Primates seldom prey on snakes, and humans are one of the few primate species that do. We report here another case, the wild capuchin monkey (Sapajus libidinosus), which preys on snakes. We hypothesized that capuchin monkeys, due to their behavioral plasticity, and cogni

A novel nonsense mutation in the tyrosinase gene is related to the albinism in a capuchin monkey (Sapajus apella).

BACKGROUND: Oculocutaneous Albinism (OCA) is an autosomal recessive inherited condition that affects the pigmentation of eyes, hair and skin. The OCA phenotype may be caused by mutations in the tyrosinase gene (TYR), which expresses the tyrosinase enzyme and has an important role in the synthesis of melanin pigment. The aim of this study was to identify the genetic mutation responsible for the albinism in a captive capuchin monkey, and to describe the TYR gene of normal phenotype individuals. In addition, we identified the subject's species. RESULTS: A homozygous nonsense mutation was identif

Mycobacterium tuberculosis var. tuberculosis infection in two captive black capuchins (Sapajus nigritus) in Southern Brazil.

Tuberculosis is a common zooanthroponosis in humans with a high incidence in Brazil, but it may also affect non-human primates (NHPs), of which Old World primates are most commonly involved. Nonetheless, its occurrence in New World primates is unknown, and therefore, this study aimed to describe the infection by Mycobacterium tuberculosis variant tuberculosis in two captive black capuchin monkeys (Sapajus nigritus) in Southern Brazil. The primates were housed in the same enclosure, wherein close contact with humans frequently occurred, and presented apathy, anorexia, and death in a clinical co

Pyogranulomatous endophthalmitis and posterior uveitis in a crested capuchin (Sapajus robustus) with systemic Paracoccidioides brasiliensis infection.

Herein, we describe ocular abnormalities in an adult male Crested Capuchin (Sapajus robustus) with partial unilateral loss of vision. On necropsy, there was a white, firm, and homogeneous plaque expanding the ciliary body of the left eyeball. White, irregular and firm nodules were observed in skeletal muscles, lymph nodes, lungs, heart, spleen, ileum, cecum, pancreas, and testes. Microscopically, diffuse severe pyogranulomatous endophthalmitis in the left eyeball and mild granulomatous posterior uveitis in the right eyeball, both with intralesional yeasts, were noted. Clitoral length in immature and mature captive tufted capuchin (Sapajus spp.) females: A cross-sectional study.

Quantitative data on female external genital morphology are sporadic in the primate literature, and the intraspecific and interfemale variation is especially under investigated (e.g., external clitoris length). Since in most anthropoid primate species female external genitals are relatively small and often hidden, for those species whose external clitoris is described as hypertrophic, external genital resemblance may represent a source of confusion in distinguishing the sexes at a distance. This is the case of both captive and wild tufted capuchin (Sapajus spp.) infants. We provided data on ex

Wild bearded capuchin monkeys (Sapajus libidinosus) strategically place nuts in a stable position during nut-cracking.

Humans can use hand tools smoothly and effectively in varying circumstances; in other words, skillfully. A few other species of primates crack encased foods using hammer tools and anvils. Are they skilled? Positioning the food on the anvil so that it does not fall off when struck is a component of skilled cracking. We discovered that bearded capuchin monkeys deliberately place palm nuts in a relatively stable position on the anvil before striking them. In the first experiment, we marked the meridians of palm nuts where they stopped when rolled on a flat surface ("Stop meridian"). We videotaped

Object and tool manipulation diversity in an urban capuchin monkey (Sapajus libidinosus) group in Brasília National park.

Capuchin monkeys are highly skilled primates recognized for their diverse object manipulation, a crucial evolutionary trait. This study explores the influence of the urban, artificial setting of Brasília National Park (BNP)on capuchin monkeys' object manipulation behaviors, aiming to offer more systematic data on this activity within urban Cerrado environments. Object manipulation data were systematically gathered using the "all occurrences" method and video analysis, examining the object, action, and target of each manipulation, along with contextual elements such as date, actor, time, functi

Can I Have a Bite? The Influence of Infant Begging on Food Sharing in Capuchin Monkeys (Sapajus Libidinosus).

In primates, food sharing from mothers to infants may serve two main functions: supporting offspring nutritional needs (nutritional hypothesis) and facilitating the acquisition of dietary knowledge, such as what and how to eat (informational hypothesis). We investigated these hypotheses in a wild population of bearded capuchin monkeys Sapajus libidinosus, at Fazenda Boa Vista, Brazil. We analyzed 194 h of footage of 10 infants filmed over their first 18 months of life using focal animal sampling. Mothers shared food exclusively in response to infant solicitation, with solicitation events obser

Evaluation of the main disorders and microbiota of the oral cavity of capuchin monkeys (Sapajus apella) under human care.

BACKGROUND: Although critical to the overall condition of animals under human care, there is still limited information about oral health in neotropical primates. METHODS: We analyzed the main oral conditions and microbiota using mass spectrometry from 13 capuchin monkeys (Sapajus apella) under human care. The findings were registered on odontograms following the Triadan system. RESULTS: The most prevalent conditions were dental fractures (n = 9), mainly enamel fractures, and periodontal disease (n = 8), mainly grade 1 calculi. When exanimating teeth, alterations were identified in 90 out of

Anatomy applied to image diagnosis of the hind limb in the black-striped capuchin (Sapajus libidinosus Spix, 1823).

The knowledge of anatomy and imaging exams emerges as an important tool in the study of evolutionary processes of a species, in the elaboration of diagnosis, and the successful choice of the appropriate clinical and surgical procedures. Therefore, this study aims to describe the osteology of the hind limb of Sapajus libidinosus by means of gross, radiographic, and tomographic images. Four cadavers were used in the macroscopic analysis and five animals for the imaging exams, of which four were eventually euthanized and added to the macroscopic study.
