Global prevalence of lagomorpha coccidiosis from 1951 to 2024: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

The global prevalence of coccidia infection in lagomorphs and potential risk factors were investigated through a meta-analysis of 149 studies published between 1951 and 2024. The pooled prevalence of Eimeriidae, Sarcocystidae and Cryptosporidiidae was found to be 66.0 %, 8.0 % and 6.1 %, respectively. Rabbits and hares exhibited the highest prevalence of Eimeriidae at 63.1 % and 71.8 %, while pikas had the highest prevalence of Cryptosporidiidae at 17.1 %. Countries located in the southern hemisphere exhibited the highest prevalence of Cryptosporidiidae (11.4 %). The African Region had the hig

Toxoplasmosis and Sarcocystis spp. infection in wild pinnipeds of the Brazilian coast.

The protozoans Toxoplasma gondii and Sarcocystis spp. (Sarcocystidae: Apicomplexa) affect a wide variety of vertebrates. Both have been reported to infect pinnipeds, with impacts on health ranging from inapparent to fulminant disease and death. However, little is known regarding their infections and associated pathology in South American pinnipeds. We used histological techniques to survey for the presence of T. gondii and Sarcocystis spp. in 51 stranded pinnipeds from Brazil. Immunohistochemical and molecular assays were employed in those cases consistent with Sarcocystidae infection. T. gond

RETROSPECTIVE SURVEY FOR PATHOGENS IN STRANDED MARINE MAMMALS IN NORTHEASTERN BRAZIL: BRUCELLA SPP. INFECTION IN A CLYMENE DOLPHIN ( STENELLA CLYMENE).

:  We surveyed 13 carcasses of marine mammals (12 Trichechus manatus and one Stenella clymene) that had stranded in northeastern Brazil during 1990-2013 for infectious diseases by screening tissues from the collection of the Brazilian National Center of Research and Conservation of Aquatic Mammal, Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation. Brucella spp. and Mycobacterium spp. were investigated by culturing and PCR of tissue samples, whereas Sarcocystidae parasites, Leptospira spp., and Morbillivirus were surveyed for using specific PCR assays. Brucella spp. and Mycobacterium spp. we

Canine cholecystitis in the presence of Hammondia spp. infection.

Biliary protozoal infections are becoming increasingly recognized in dogs. Sarcocystidae protozoal infections (i.e Toxoplasma, Neospora, Hammondia, Besnoitia, and Sarcocystis spp.) are uncommon and host-specific. Diagnosis is traditionally dependent on tissue or serologic evaluation; sensitivity and specificity for these techniques can vary. PCR amplification and genetic sequencing provide a technique to expedite diagnosis and species identification in clinical biliary protozoal infections. Bile samples were collected percutaneously from two dogs presented to a referral hospital with mixed hep

The genus Atoxoplasma (Garnham 1950) as a junior objective synonym of the genus Isospora (Schneider 1881) species infecting birds and resurrection of Cystoisospora (Frenkel 1977) as the correct genus for Isospora species infecting mammals.

Molecular and morphological data permit a rational subdivision of the paraphyletic Isospora into 2 apparently monophyletic groups of parasites, i.e., Isospora and Cystoisospora. Atoxoplasma was determined to be a junior objective synonym for Isospora. Tetrasporozoic, diplosporocystic oocysts possessing Stieda bodies in their sporocysts belong to Isospora (Eimeriidae) and have been described principally from the feces of birds. Tetrasporozoic, diplosporocystic oocysts without Stieda bodies in their sporocysts belong to Cystoisospora (Sarcocystidae).

Longitudinal study of a rodent invasion reveals shifts in host pathogen interactions.

Invasive species can disrupt native epidemiological processes, potentially leading to the emergence of zoonotic pathogens. The relatively recent appearance and spread of the bank vole (Clethrionomys glareolus) in Ireland provides a unique model system to study these phenomena. The depauperate small mammal community in Ireland, combined with baseline data, allows us to identify the invasion gradient of C. glareolus and its effects on rodent-borne pathogens over time. A total of 498 C. glareolus and 584 Apodemus sylvaticus were sampled, via removal trapping, across nine sites in Ireland in 2016

Hyaloklossia Labbé, 1896 (Alveolata: Apicomplexa) in frogs: Description of a new species and proposing a new subfamily to accommodate these enigmatic parasites.

Hyaloklossia Labbé ,1896 (Alveolata: Apicomplexa) is a monotypic genus of renal coccidia found in anurans, particularly in the edible frog Pelophylax kl. esculentus (Amphibia: Anura: Ranidae), distributed in different parts of Europe. Here we propose a new Hyaloklossia species from the Tokyo daruma pond frog, Pelophylax porosus porosus. The coccidium detected in the renal tissue of P. p. porosus shared some morphological characteristics with the type species, Hyaloklossia lieberkuehni (Labbé, 1894), reported from P. kl. esculentus. However, in addition to size differences in several oocyst and

Occurrence of chosen parasitic protozoa of roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) and red deer (Cervus elaphus) in Poland: a current review.

Both roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) and red deer (Cervus elaphus) are wild ruminants that are present in large numbers in Poland. Although both are very often infected with parasitic protozoa, the species composition of these parasites and their prevalence are relatively poorly known. The aim of the present work is to gather existing data on the occurrence and species diversity of parasitic protozoa of the genus Eimeria, Babesia, Theileria, Giardia, Cryptosporidium and family Sarcocystidae in red deer and roe deer in Poland and compare the findings with those from other European countries.

The red-tailed hawk, Buteo jamaicensis, a native definitive host of Frenkelia microti (Apicomplexa) in North America.

Oral inoculation of prairie voles, Microtus ochrogaster, with coccidian sporocysts isolated from the feces of a red-tailed hawk, Buteo jamaicensis, in Kansas, USA, resulted in formation of Frenkelia microti (Apicomplexa: Sarcocystidae) tissue cysts in the brains of the voles. Five additional isolates of morphologically similar sporocysts collected from red-tailed hawks or other Buteo spp. in Kansas failed to result in detectable infections in rodents. These results are the first to verify that red-tailed hawks are natural definitive host in North America for F. microti.

Apicomplexans in small mammals from Chile, with the first report of the Babesia microti group in South American rodents.

Small mammals play an essential role as disseminators of pathogens because they reach high population densities and have ubiquitous distributions. In the Northern Hemisphere rodents are well recognized as reservoirs for tick-borne bacteria of the Anaplasmataceae family and also apicomplexan protozoans. In contrast, South American rodents hosting these microorganisms have been rarely identified. In this study, we collected blood from rodents and marsupials in northern Chile and screened for Anaplasmataceae bacteria and apicomplexan protozoa. Overall, 14.7% of the samples were positive for Babes

Progression of asexual to sexual stages of Cystoisospora suis in a host cell-free environment as a model for Coccidia.

Coccidia display a characteristic life cycle, where the parasites switch between asexual and sexual development, resulting in an environmental stage, the oocyst. The entero-pathogenic Cystoisospora suis, a coccidian parasite of swine and close relative to Toxoplasma gondii, undergoes development in one host-cycle. Despite the well-described intracellular development of Coccidia, the C. suis life cycle can progress in an in vitro, host cell-free system after initial intracellular development of merozoites. A novel host cell-free cultivation method was developed by transferring purified merozoit

A Comparison of Stage Conversion in the Coccidian Apicomplexans Toxoplasma gondii, Hammondia hammondi, and Neospora caninum.

Stage conversion is a critical life cycle feature for several Apicomplexan parasites as the ability to switch between life forms is critical for replication, dissemination, pathogenesis and ultimately, transmission to a new host. In order for these developmental transitions to occur, the parasite must first sense changes in their environment, such as the presence of stressors or other environmental signals, and then respond to these signals by initiating global alterations in gene expression. As our understanding of the genetic components required for stage conversion continues to broaden, we

Cystoisospora belli infections in humans: the past 100 years.

Cystoisospora belli is a coccidian parasite of humans, with a direct fecal-oral transmission cycle. It is globally distributed, but mainly found in tropical and subtropical areas. Many cases of C. belli infections have been reported in patients with HIV, and in patients undergoing immunosuppressive therapy for organ transplants or those treated for tumours worldwide. Unsporulated or partially sporulated oocysts of C. belli are excreted in feces. When sporulated oocysts in contaminated water or food are ingested, asexual and sexual stages of C. belli are confined to the epithelium of intestines

Toxoplasma gondii, Sarcocystis sp. and Neospora caninum-like parasites in seals from northern and eastern Canada: potential risk to consumers.

Zoonotic parasites of seals that are harvested for food may pose a health risk when seal meat or organ tissues of infected animals are eaten raw or undercooked. In this study, 124 tissue samples from 81 seals, comprising four species, were collected from northern and eastern Canada. Tissues from 23 ringed seals (Pusa hispida), 8 hooded seals (Cystophora cristata), 21 harp seals (Pagophilus groenlandicus), and 29 grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) were tested for parasites of the Sarcocystidae family including Toxoplasma gondii, Sarcocystis spp., and Neospora spp. using nested PCR followed by Sang

Drivers of infection with Toxoplasma gondii genotype type II in Eurasian red squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris).

BACKGROUND: In September 2014, there was sudden upsurge in the number of Eurasian red squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris) found dead in the Netherlands. High infection levels with the parasite Toxoplasma gondii were demonstrated, but it was unclear what had caused this increase in cases of fatal toxoplasmosis. In the present study, we aimed to gain more knowledge on the pathology and prevalence of T. gondii infections in Eurasian red squirrels in the Netherlands, on the T. gondii genotypes present, and on the determinants of the spatiotemporal variability in these T. gondii infections. The presence o

Nodular pyogranulomatous pneumonia associated with Besnoitia darlingi infection in a cat.

A 1-y-old, castrated male domestic shorthair cat was evaluated because of a 1-mo history of chronic cough, dyspnea, and lethargy that progressed to anorexia during the week preceding euthanasia. Radiographically, the right caudal and middle lung lobes were consolidated. Cytologic and histologic examination of the right caudal lung lobe revealed pyogranulomatous inflammation with intralesional protozoal organisms. Although morphologically similar to and immunohistochemically reactive for Toxoplasma gondii, the organisms had inconsistent features, such as variability in shape and size. With Sarc

ANTIBODIES TO BESNOITIA SPP. IN THREE SPECIES OF FREERANGING OPOSSUM (DIDELPHIS SPP.) IN FLORIDA, USA, AND BRAZIL.

The opossum has been recognized as an intermediate host for many parasites including Besnoitia spp., which is a protozoan that infects various mammals, including many wildlife species. A limited number of reports using serology, histopathology, and molecular assays have documented the presence of B. darlingi in opossums. Disseminated cystoisosporiasis in an HIV-infected patient: long-term clinical, parasitological and molecular follow-up.

Disseminated Cystoisospora belli infection is an uncommon but potentially fatal manifestation in patients with AIDS, and information on extended follow-up is limited. A 39-year-old man with HIV/AIDS and disseminated cystoisosporiasis was monitored clinically, parasitologically and molecularly during hospitalization and for three subsequent years. Oocyst excretion ended by day six, while C. belli DNA remained detectable in blood until day 30. All later samples were negative and no relapse occurred. Serial molecular testing in blood proved useful for monitoring the course of disseminated cystois

Cystoisospora suis - the non-model model coccidium.

Cystoisospora suis, the cause of suckling piglet coccidiosis, is an intestinal protozoan pathogen of worldwide distribution and major economic and animal health significance in swine industry. It is closely related to cyst-forming, facultatively heteroxenic Coccidia like Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum, but its biology resembles more that of the non-cyst-forming, homoxenic genus Eimeria. Lately, a unique in vitro cultivation system for C. suis was developed by which sporozoites infect monolayer cell cultures to produce merozoites which can in turn be propagated in a host-cell free syste
