Sarcocystis species are apicomplexan protozoa infecting a wide range of domestic and wild animals, including cattle, in which several species are of zoonotic relevance. This study reports, for the first time, the detection and molecular identification of pathogenic and zoonotic Sarcocystis hominis in slaughtered cattle from Central Chile. A total of 200 muscle samples (100 = myocardium, 100 = diaphragm) were examined by macroscopic inspection and tissue homogenization. Selected samples were additionally analyzed by histology, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy

A geriatric captive bobcat (Lynx rufus) was euthanized due to progressive anorexia and lethargy. Meningoencephalitis with intralesional apicomplexan organisms was identified histologically. With immunohistochemistry, the organisms were immunolabeled by anti-Sarcocystis neurona antibodies. PCR targeting the ITS region of the parasite yielded an amplicon with >99.6% identity to several Sarcocystis dasypi, S. neurona, and S. speeri sequences. Amplification of the 18S region yielded a sequence that was 99.9% similar to sequences of both S. neurona (MN169125) and S. speeri (KX470746). Inflammatory

Sarcocystosis is a zoonotic infection that causes intestinal and muscular illnesses in humans. Sarcocystosis was until recently considered rare in humans. To complete their life cycle, Sarcocystis species require both a definitive and an intermediate host. Humans are the definitive host when infected by one of two species: Sarcocystis hominis (from eating undercooked beef) or Sarcocystis suihominis (from eating uncooked pork). Infection with either of these species results in intestinal sarcocystosis, causing a self-limited disease characterized by nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Humans

Hearts, diaphragms, esophagi, and spinal cords from 266 horses were obtained at slaughter in Creston, Ohio. Tissues were examined microscopically for Sarcocystis in sections, digested in trypsin to obtain bradyzoites, and fed to 10 dogs and 10 cats. Intramuscular cysts were found in selections of two hearts from 57 horses and four esophagi from 107 horses. The cysts were up to 900 micron long and up to 70 micron wide. The cyst wall was 1 to 2 micron thick and cross-striated. The enclosed bradyzoites were banana-shaped, 15 to 20 by 20 to 3 micron, and contained several PAS-positive granules. Br

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Apicomplexan parasites of the genus Sarcocystis exhibit complex two-host life cycles involving birds as both intermediate hosts (IH) and definitive hosts (DH). Despite Colombia's exceptional avian diversity, knowledge of Sarcocystis species in its wild birds remains limited. This study aimed to characterize the morphology and genetic identity of Sarcocystis species infecting three Colombian birds, the Great Kiskadee (Pitangus sulphuratus), American black vulture (Coragyps atratus), and Andean condor (Vultur gryphus).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Muscle samples from the three spe

The gut Coccidia are members of a large, varied, and exclusively intracellular group of protozoan parasites, four species of which (Isospora, Cryptosporidium, Cyclospora, and Sarcocystis) are human pathogens. The first three, but particularly Cryptosporidium parvum, have moved from medical curiosities to major problems with the coming of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) epidemic, but are now known to also cause disease in the immunocompetent patient. They are easy to acquire and difficult to remove from the environment and, in the case of cryptosporidiosis, impossible to treat pro

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this study was to evaluate the presence of anti-Sarcocystis spp. specific IgG antibodies in serum samples from precolostral lambs to determine the occurrence of transplacental transmission of Sarcocystis spp. in sheep.
METHODS: Blood samples were collected from 80 ewes and their respective lambs, immediately after lambing and before colostrum ingestion, respectively. The presence of anti-Sarcocystis spp. IgG was evaluated in serum samples using the indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT). Positive samples of the lambs were submitted to titration and IFAT to de

Oesophagus samples from 714 cattle from Western Australia were examined by artificial digestion to detect the presence of Sarcocystis spp. The overall prevalence of infection was 52%. The prevalence of infection increased with age and was highest in the entire males (92%). The prevalence was lower in cattle which originated from arid and semiarid regions (9 and 31% respectively) than those from tropical (87%) and temperate (60%) regions. Possible reasons for these differences are discussed and it is concluded that environmental and management factors as well as host age and sex influence the p

Intramural masses were resected from jejunum and ileocecal portion of a 49-year-old, female patient with partial gut obstruction. Histopathological examination indicated the masses to be tumorous eosinophilic enterocolitis. Recent and late development phases of Sarcocystis in relation to bradyzoite infection have been observed and considered to be responsible for eosinophilic inflammation. Concomitant intestinal actinomycosis, known to produce tumorous lesion without eosinophilia, appears as an attractive natural model in producing tumorous eosinophilic enterocolitis. A generalized enlargement of the lymph nodes was found in an emaciated adult ewe. Additional autopsy findings included tiny grey-white necrotic foci in the heart muscle, aspiration pneumonia and diffuse pleuritis. Light microscopy showed a generalized lymphadenopathy with perilymphadenitis, depletion of lymphocytes and histiocytosis of the lymph node. In histiocytes and vascular endothelial cells of lymph nodes, septal capillary endothelium of lungs and capillary endothelium of myocardium, early stages of a protozoan parasite were found. In the myocardium, there were many foci of necrosis, som

INTRODUCTION: Wild boars and domestic pigs can act as intermediate hosts for two Sarcocystis species: Sarcocystis miescheriana and the zoonotic Sarcocystis suihominis. Humans become infected with S. suihominis by eating raw or undercooked meat. Herein we investigated the occurrence of Sarcocystis spp. in wild boars hunted for human consumption in Poland.
METHODS: Diaphragms were collected from 241 wild boars during two hunting seasons; a multiplex-PCR protocol targeting the mtDNA cox1 gene of S. miescheriana and S. suihominis was applied; diaphragm samples testing positive for S. suihominis u

Muscles from heart, tongue, oesophagus, neck and abdomen from 502 adult water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) slaughtered in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, between 1996 and 1997 were examined for Sarcocystis cysts by a combination of ocular and histological examination. Sarcocysts were present in 396 (79%) of the animals and the prevalence increased with age from a 57% infection rate among 2-3 year old animals to 93% among 6-7 year olds. The prevalence was higher in animals originating from the northern part (89%) than in those from the southern part (69%) of the country. Four species of Sarcocystis w

Multifocal myositis was diagnosed in a 7-year-old Quarter Horse gelding on the basis of history and findings on physical examination, serum biochemical analysis, electromyography, and microscopic examination of frozen sections of muscle biopsy specimens. Histologic examination of the muscle specimen revealed multifocal accumulations of histiocytes, lymphocytes, and plasma cells, with attendant myofiber degeneration and necrosis. Parasitic cysts with morphologic characteristics of Sarcocystis sp were found in regions of myocyte degeneration and necrosis, and in regions of normal muscle. Based o

Prevalence of species of Sarcocystis in muscle of 36 caribou, Rangifer tarandus terraenorae, shot in Newfoundland, Canada, was 53%. A greater percentage of infected animals were obtained from the central part of the island. The highest concentration of microscopic sarcocysts, 1/mm2 of tissue, was observed in a 5-year old animal. Although widely distributed throughout the body, cysts were more prevalent in the tongue and diaphragm. The potential of Sarcocystis in caribou as a food-borne disease organism in man cannot be overlooked in view of its prevalence in meat and its widespread consumption

Sarcocystis spp can cause poor growth, anorexia, fever, anemia, muscular weakness, nervousness, abortion, and even death in cattle. Lesions in the CNS of cattle infected with Sarcocystis spp are microscopic and relatively minor, compared with those in other organs. We report extensive encephalitis in a steer attributable to a Sarcocystis-like organism.

Sarcocystis was identified in biopsy specimens of skeletal muscle from two adults in Singapore and one in Bombay, and in muscle obtained at autopsy from an adult in Uganda, and in the heart of a child in Costa Rica. Review of case reports revealed that in seven reported cases, including three reported by Lindemann, non-parasite objects were misinterpreted as sarcocysts; in four instances organisms of undetermined classification were described, and in 35 cases true sarcocysts were observed. Among the sarcocysts seen in the 40 cases (35 old, 5 new), seven morphological types were recognized, eac

Data on the distribution of different Sarcocystis species in various muscles of sheep are scarce. In the present study, 190 diaphragm, oesophagus, and heart muscle samples of 69 sheep raised in Lithuania were examined for the presence of Sarcocystis spp. Under a light microscope, two morphological types of microcysts corresponding to S. arieticanis and S. tenella were detected. Eight and 12 sarcocysts of S. arieticanis and S. tenella, respectively, were isolated and characterised by the sequencing of a portion of cox1. The sequence comparisons revealed the highest similarity between European a

The protozoan Sarcocystis neurona is an important cause of severe clinical disease of horses (called equine protozoal myeloencephalitis, EPM), marine mammals, companion animals, and several species of wildlife animals in the Americas. The Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana) is its definitive host in the USA and other animals act as intermediate or aberrant hosts. Samples of tongue and heart from 35 bobcats hunted for fur and food from Mississippi State, USA in February, 2014 were used for the present study. Muscles were examined for Sarcocystis infection by microscopic examination of eithe
