The radiologic manifestations of alveolar soft-part sarcoma.

Alveolar soft-part sarcoma is a rare soft-tissue tumor of unknown cellular origin that is characterized histologically by its organized "pseudoalveolar" pattern. The radiologic findings in 11 patients with this neoplasm were reviewed. The six men and five women were 16-48 years old (mean, 27 years). Nine patients had untreated primary tumors (thigh, four; forearm, two; and buttock, rectus abdominis muscle, and infratemporal fossa, one each) and two had locally recurrent masses (one each in the retroperitoneum and retrocrural space). All patients were evaluated by conventional radiography, two

Alveolar soft-part sarcoma: a hormone-sensitive tumour?

Alveolar soft-part sarcoma is a rare, slow-growing, malignant tumour which metastasizes frequently to the lungs. Treatment with radiotherapy or chemotherapy is largely ineffective, and most patients die within 4 years of developing metastases. We report an unusual patient who survived 9 years after detection of pulmonary metastases. Initial treatment with cytotoxic chemotherapy was ineffective. However, during subsequent treatment with Chinese herbs when she developed galactorrhoea and amenorrhoea (probably due to drug-induced hyperprolactinaemia), her lung metastases regressed, and it is like

A case of alveolar soft part sarcoma of the pleura.

Alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) is a rare malignant soft-tissue neoplasm of unknown histogenesis. The two main sites of occurrence are the lower extremities in adults and the head and neck in children. We report the first case of pleural ASPS occurring in a 58-yr-old man who presented with progressive dyspnea. A computed tomographic scan of the thorax revealed a large enhancing pleural mass with pleural effusion in the left hemithorax. Wide excision of the pleural mass was performed. Histologically, the tumor consisted of organoid nests of large polygonal cells, the cytoplasm of which had eo

Alveolar soft part sarcoma of the head and neck.

The twelfth case (in 25 years of literature) of alveolar soft part sarcoma of the head and neck is presented. It represents the seventh case to occur in the base of tongue and the second to be associated with pregnancy. The average age of onset is in the second decade with a 2:1 female preponderance and a marked tendency to right-sided occurrence. Treatment with surgery and/or radiotherapy is not curative. Local recurrence is common as are distant metastases, usually to lung, brain or bone. Theoretically, chemotherapy may offer better control of disease but few agents have shown dramatic respo

Pediatric Primary Alveolar Soft Part Sarcoma of the Bladder.

A 9-year-old girl was diagnosed with primary alveolar soft part sarcoma of the bladder after imaging examinations and transurethral resection (TUR) of the bladder tumor. As a positive surgical margin of the TUR indicated residual tumor cells, we performed a cystourethrectomy to remove the tumor. A continent urinary reservoir for self-catheterization was constructed using the Mainz pouch technique, and an abdominal (umbilical) continent catheterizable stoma using the appendix was performed. For 2.5 years postoperatively, the patient remained free of local recurrence and distant metastasis. The

Lingual alveolar soft part sarcoma with absent TFE3 rearrangement.

BACKGROUND: Lingual ASPS is extremely rare and aggressive tumor. rearrangement is typically detected in ASPS patients using FISH analysis. AIM: To present the clinical, histopathological, and radiological features of lingual Alveolar Soft Part Sarcoma. METHOD: A 30-year-old male presented with a painless, slowly growing mass of the tongue. Initial impression was of benign vascular lesion. Later, the patient became symptomatic as the mass progressed in size, which necessitated further investigations. RESULT: A lip-split, mandibulotomy was performed for the excision of the tumor and revealed

Alveolar Soft Part Sarcoma of Hypopharynx; A Case Report.

Alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) is an aggressive soft-tissue malignancy, notorious for its metastasis to other tissues. A considerable number of cases in the head and neck have been reported but not in the hypopharynx. We describe a 31-year-old man with an incidental finding of a hypopharyngeal mass. Flexible laryngoscopy revealed a fleshy mass 2 × 2 cm2 originating from the left hypopharynx and overlying the epiglottis. Computed tomography scan demonstrated a soft tissue mass in the left wall of the oropharynx measuring about 2.2 × 1.8 cm2, projecting into the hypopharyngeal air space. Magn

ASPL-TFE3 translocation in vulvovaginal alveolar soft part sarcoma.

Alveolar soft part sarcoma of the vulvovaginal region is limited to only 8 reported vaginal cases and 1 vulvar case in the English literature. The histogenesis of the tumor remains intriguing with postulates favoring a myogenic versus nonmyogenic origin. A reciprocal translocation for ASPL-TFE3 gene fusion, frequently detected in ~90% of cases, combined with TFE3 protein immunoexpression are highly sensitive and specific methods for diagnostic confirmation. The current report describes a unique case of vulvovaginal alveolar soft part sarcoma showing the classic morphologic features with docume

Unusual gastrointestinal metastases from an alveolar soft part sarcoma.

Alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) is a rare subtype of soft tissue sarcoma that occurs predominantly in young patients. Despite its relatively indolent course, it generally has a poor prognosis with widespread metastases. The common metastatic sites from an ASPS include the lung, brain and bone. However, metastasis of an ASPS to the gastrointestinal tract is extremely rare. Here, we report a rare case of upper gastrointestinal bleeding and jejunal intussusception due to gastrointestinal metastases from an ASPS.

Alveolar soft-part sarcoma presenting with eosinophilia and shunt.

Alveolar soft-part sarcoma (ASPS) is a rare soft tissue tumour found in young adults that usually arises in skeletal muscle and occurs most frequently in the lower limbs. Radiological and pathological findings of ASPS in a 34-year-old man who presented with increasing shortness of breath over a period of four to six weeks with peripheral blood eosinophilia, hypoxemia and a significant arteriovenous shunt are reported. The present article is the fourth report of eosinophilia in association with sarcoma, and the first involving ASPS.

Alveolar soft part sarcoma. A clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical study.

The histogenesis of alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) has been investigated since its description. Twenty ASPS cases were analyzed for immunohistochemical content, with emphasis directed toward the paraganglial, Schwann cell, and muscle theories of histogenesis. In addition, the cases were examined for possible prognostic clinical features. The clinical characteristics of the patients were similar to those reported previously concerning average age (23 years); male:female ratio (1:1); and predominant primary site (lower extremity, nine cases). Despite a local recurrence rate of 20% and a metas

Alveolar soft part sarcoma in a child - a case report.

BACKGROUND: Alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) is a very rare mesenchymal malignancy of uncertain origin. It mostly affects young people, with about a quarter of cases being diagnosed in children. CASE: An 11-year-old girl had a painless subcutaneous "lump" in the left elbow area. Imaging exams revealed a solid soft-tissue intramuscular mass of suspicious appearance. A surgical excision of lesion was performed. The biopsy consisted of a lobular tumor measuring 35 × 20 × 12 mm. Histology revealed an epithelioid-cell population arranged in organoid pseudoalveolar pattern. It immunohistochemicall

Alveolar soft part sarcoma of the retroperitoneum: A case report.

Alveolar soft part sarcoma is a rare soft tissue tumor with uncertain histogenesis. It is a slow growing tumor with a high rate of metastasis. The tumor is not easily identified as clinical symptoms are not pronounced. The retroperitoneum is a rare location of tumor, with a few cases published in literature. Surgical excision is the mainstay of treatment. Here we describe a rare case of a large retroperitoneal Alveolar soft part sarcoma in a young female with radiological and histopathological findings.

Alveolar soft part sarcoma of the vagina. A case report.

We present a case of alveolar soft part sarcoma of the vagina in an 18-year-old woman. The presenting symptoms were menometrorrhagia and a painless vaginal mass. The tumor was in the vaginal stroma with intact mucosa. Periodic acid-Schiff stain showed positive diastase-resistant crystals in some of the tumor cells. Electron microscopy demonstrated characteristic intracytoplasmic crystals. Formaldehyde-induced fluorescence stain showed no catecholamines, and Grimelius stain showed no argyrophilic granules. Black pigment was found within some tumor cells; it proved to be melanin pigment by Masso

A Rare Presentation of Alveolar Soft Part Sarcoma in the Bladder.

Alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) is a rare and distinctive subtype of soft tissue sarcoma accounting for <1% of all sarcomas. Characterized by the t(X;17)(p11;q25) translocation, it typically affects the extremities in younger individuals. This case report presents a bladder ASPS in a 45-year-old woman, a rare occurrence, developing as a second primary malignancy following breast cancer treatment. Histopathological analysis, immunohistochemistry and molecular diagnostics confirmed the diagnosis. The patient underwent partial cystectomy with clear surgical margins and remained recurrence-free

Alveolar soft-part sarcoma of the mediastinum: A case report.

We report a 53-year-old man with metastases of alveolar soft-part sarcoma originated from the mediastinum. He was hospitalized due to lower extremities' paralysis. Computed tomography scan findings revealed multiple nodules of bilateral lungs, swollen mediastinal lymph nodes, and osteolysis of thoracic vertebrae. We performed spinal decompression and biopsy from vertebra. And, we finally diagnosed this case as metastases of mediastinal alveolar soft-part sarcoma which was removed 10 years ago. Alveolar soft-part sarcoma is rare tumor accounted for 0.5%-1.0% of soft tissue sarcoma that often oc

[A case of alveolar soft-part sarcoma with cerebral metastases].

A case of alveolar soft-part sarcoma with multiple cerebral metastases in addition to multiple lung and bone metastases is reported. This is a rare tumor which thus far has only been recognized as a malignant soft tissue tumor with great uncertainty. A 24-year-old man with a chief complaint of left frontal headache was admitted to our unit on September 26, 1994. A tumor of the right forearm had been surgically removed 9 years previously, and surgery had been followed by two courses of chemotherapy with vincristine, cyclophosphamide and actinomycin-D and subsequent irradiation for bone metastas

Alveolar soft part sarcoma presenting in an unusual laryngeal location.

Alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) is a rare malignant neoplasm that tends to occur in the deep soft tissues of both adults and children. ASPS has a progressive clinical course that is unfortunately characterised by late metastases and an overall poor prognosis. Although the tumour has been reported in a wide range of anatomic sites, few cases of primary laryngeal ASPS are reported in the literature. Here, we report the case of a 24-year-old man with no significant medical history who presented with progressive mild dysphonia and hoarseness. Imaging studies revealed a well-circumscribed, partia
