An 11-year-old female Persian cat underwent ovariohysterectomy due to dilation of the uterine cavity with irregular thickening of the wall. Macroscopically, the middle and distal regions of the left uterine horn were swollen and the uterine wall was irregularly thickened due to the development of multiple coalescent, variably sized nodules. Microscopically, the nodules had originated in the endometrium and were composed of round to polygonal neoplastic cells arranged in dense sheets or ill-defined fascicles. The neoplastic cells had locally invaded the myometrium and reached the subserosa, wit

Pulmonary metastasis of low-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma is rare. A 61-year-old woman visited our hospital due to an abnormal chest shadow. Computed tomograhy showed a mass that was composed of a cystic and solid lesion, in the right lower lobe. She had undergone a combination of a hysterectomy and adnexectomy for a low-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma 57 months previously, and undergone adjuvant radiation therapy at the local site. To obtain a definitive diagnosis of the lung tumor, we performed lobectomy of the right lower lobe and lymph node dissection. To avoid possible dissemination

An interesting case with an unusual presentation of endometrial sarcoma is described. This patient presented with a history of continuous vaginal bleeding 3 months following a full term caesarean section and perception of an enlarging abdominal mass. The physical examination revealed an enlarged uterus with a leiomyoma though there was no evidence of the same at the time of the caesarean section. A laparotomy was undertaken and the patient was found to have a large tumor with multiple polypoidal growths invading the myometrium through to the serosa. This was proven to be an endometrial stromal

A 27-year-old woman presented with right proximal pulmonary embolism associated with thrombosis of the right inferior pulmonary vein extending into the left atrium as an atrial mass. The etiological work-up revealed a BCOR-rearranged endometrial stromal sarcoma. Clinical evolution was favorable under anticoagulation, except for the atrial lesion, whose thrombotic or tumoral nature could not be definitively established despite multimodality imaging. This clinical case highlights the limitations of noninvasive characterization of intracardiac masses in an oncologic setting and their impact on th

Eosinophilia is a common systemic reaction to allergy, parasitic infection, or drug hypersensitivity. Rarely, it manifests as a paraneoplastic phenomenon, most commonly secondary to hematologic malignancies or extensive metastatic disease in solid tumors. There is scarce literature attributing peripheral eosinophilia to solid organ malignancies, especially gynecologic malignancies. We present the first reported case of peripheral eosinophilia secondary to high-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma (HGESS). A postmenopausal woman presented with weakness, urinary incontinence, and marked peripheral

Endometrial stromal sarcoma (ESS) is a rare malignant tumor of the endometrium, occurring in the age group of 40-50 years. We report a case of low-grade ESS in a 39-year-old woman, presenting as rapid enlargement of a uterine fibroid polyp associated with irregular and excessive vaginal bleeding. Polypectomy followed by pan hysterectomy was performed. Histopathological examination and immunohistochemistry confirmed LGESS. As the tumor is rarely encountered, management protocols are still questionable. In our case, we tried a different post-surgical protocol and the patient is being closely fol

Endometrial stromal sarcoma (ESS) is a rare malignant neoplasm of the uterus. We retrospectively analyzed pelvic MR imaging in 8 cases of ESS to determine the characteristic MR findings of ESS. Magnetic resonance images of 8 cases of ESS were evaluated for findings including the size, margin of the tumor, nodular lesions at the tumor margin, intramyometrial worm-like nodular extension, multiple nodular mass formation, hemorrhage, and necrosis in the tumor. The degree of contrast enhancement was also analyzed. The MR imaging findings of 21 consecutive cases of endometrial carcinoma (EC) were al

Extrauterine endometrial stromal sarcoma (EESS) is extremely rare, especially with the colorectum involvement. We describe 18 F-FDG PET/CT findings of EESS in the sigmoid colon and rectum in a 46-year-old woman who complained diarrhea. 18 F-FDG PET/CT revealed multiple hypermetabolic lesions in the abdomen and pelvis, including the sigmoid colon and rectum. Therefore, colorectal cancer with metastases was initially suspected; however, ultimately low-grade EESS was pathologically confirmed. Widespread EESS with intestine involvement revealed by 18 F-FDG PET/CT should be carefully distinguished

Extrauterine endometrial stromal sarcomas (EUESSs) are rare tumours occurring without primary uterine involvement. They are classified as primary or secondary, depending on uterine involvement by stromal sarcomas. A 56-year-old woman who earlier underwent bilateral modified radical mastectomy for adenocarcinoma and total abdominal hysterectomy for endometrial stromal sarcoma, followed by tamoxifen therapy, presented with left loin pain. On evaluation, she had a left renal calculus with hydroureteronephrosis. Before percutaneous nephrolithotripsy, ureteroscopy revealed a polypoidal mass that wa

Endometrial stromal cell sarcomas (ESS) are a unique subtype of uterine malignancy. Recurrent low grade endometrial stromal sarcomas (LESS) is identified in half of the patients. Here, we discuss a case of a 76-year-old Asian female with a past medical history of adenomyosis and hypertension who presented to the outpatient clinic with a chief complaint of painless hematuria for one day. Computed tomography scan of abdomen and pelvis with contrast showed a new right-sided mixed cystic and solid pelvic mass measuring up to 6 cm, obstructing and invading the distal right ureter, which was concern

Endometrial stromal sarcoma (ESS) is an uncommon and challenging condition comprising 10% of all uterine sarcomas and found in women 42-58 years of age. ESS is difficult to diagnose in young women as it masquerades as a leiomyoma. We report this tumour in a 20-year-old woman presenting with heavy and prolonged menses and urinary retention. She was not sexually active and did not give consent for pelvic examination. A preoperative diagnosis of a submucous leiomyoma with an adnexal mass was made. At laparotomy, the leiomyoma was found to be wedged between the cervix and the vagina, and was remov

Low-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma (ESS) is a kind of uterine malignancy. Total hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy was the main treatment. We evaluate the feasibility of fertility-sparing management in five patients with low-grade ESS who desired for childbearing. The patients aged 28-36 years old presented with symptoms of menometrorrhagia or without symptom. Ultrasound examinations demonstrated leiomyomas (with the diameter of 3.5-6 cm respectively). All the patients received conservative surgeries of local resection of the mass with uterine reconstruction. Then the adjuvant

An endometrial stromal sarcoma (ESS) is an uncommon uterine neoplasm, and its primary occurrence in the intestine as an extrauterine ESS (EESS) is exceedingly rare. We hereby report a primary EESS arising in the sigmoid colon with a review of the literature. A 52-year-old woman presented with bloody stool and underwent a colon fiberscopy, which revealed a fungating mass obstructing the lumen at the distal sigmoid. A laparoscopic low anterior resection was performed, and an umbilicated polypoid mass was identified; on section, it had infiltrated the mesocolic fat and measured 3.8 cm × 2.5 cm. T

INTRODUCTION: Most endometrial stromal sarcomas (ESS) develop recurrent disease at pelvis and lung. Recurrent ESS in the cecum causing intussusception is a rare but emergent phenomenon.
CASE REPORT: After initial surgical treatment in 1997, a 41-year-old female developed recurrent ESS in the cecum causing ileo-colic intussusception in 2008, which were operated with right hemicolectomy. The patient was then treated with progestin for 2 years to date. She has since been disease-free.
CONCLUSION: This case report emphasizes the importance of long-term follow-up and initial surgical treatment of

BACKGROUND: Endometrial stromal sarcomas (ESS) constitute only 0.2% of all gynecological malignancies, and risk factors or genetic associations are largely unknown. We are in contact with more than 100 patients with ESS via an internet support group, and our aim was to analyze the personal and familial medical histories of this large patient group for possible familial cancers aggregations in ESS patients.
METHODS: A questionnaire regarding the personal and familial medical history was circulated among the members of the internet group, which was returned by 64 patients.
RESULTS: At diagnosi

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis can occur in unusual sites, liver involvement being first described in 1986. Extra-uterine malignant transformation in endometriosis has been reported, occurring mainly in the ovary. Liver involvement with endometrial stromal sarcoma (ESS) has not been previously reported.
CASE OUTLINE: Two patients presenting with symptomatic liver masses related to endometriosis, who successfully underwent surgical intervention, are presented.
CASE 1: A 31-year-old woman previously had been treated with hysterectomy and bilateral salpingoophorectomy for severe pelvic endometriosis

OBJECTIVES: We describe the morphologic and immunohistochemical features of 17 endometrial stromal neoplasms, 16 sarcomas, and one stromal nodule.
METHODS: We reviewed 35 cases interpreted as endometrial stromal neoplasms, but 17 high-grade endometrial stromal sarcomas (ESS) and one case of mixed endometrial sarcoma and leiomyosarcoma were excluded from the study. Data from the Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results program on low- and high-grade ESS for 1973 through 2003 were obtained.
RESULTS: One uterine primary ESS had collections of clear cells (20%), while a metastatic ESS contained

We describe the MRI and US features of two patients with endometrial stromal sarcoma of the uterus. Both lesions appeared as voluminous polypoid masses within an expanded endometrial cavity on both US and MRI. They had mixed echo-texture and heterogenous signal intensity on both T1- and T2-weighted sequences. T2-weighted images were most helpful in detecting the endometrial nature of the disease and its relationships with surrounding myometrium.
