Synovial sarcoma (SS) is a relatively common soft tissue tumor but only 6%-7% of cases are diagnosed in the head and neck region. It typically occurs in young adults and is slightly more common in males. The most common sites in the head and neck region are hypopharynx and parapharyngeal spaces. However, SS can also occur in tonsils, tongue, and orofacial soft tissues. It is not difficult to diagnose SS microscopically with its classic biphasic appearance, but the diagnosis of monophasic forms is more challenging especially in unusual locations. In this article, we report a rare case of monoph

A precordial tumor of the pericardium was radiologically diagnosed as the cause of an untypical clinical picture of heart disease in a 41-year-old soldier. As the patient had an increased asbestos exposure due to his profession, he was admitted to operation under the tentative diagnosis of a pericardial mesothelioma and the question of an occupational disease (BK 4105). Microscopic and immunohistochemical findings are compatible with the diagnosis of a synovial sarcoma of the pericardium. The present immunohistochemical marker spectrum allowed a reliable differentiation between synovial sarcom

A 14-year-old girl presented with dysphagia and weight loss. Barium swallow, computed tomography, and endoscopy showed a polypoid intraluminal mass in the cervical esophagus. The tumor was locally resected and postoperative chemotherapy and radiotherapy were administered. Histological examination of the surgical specimen established a diagnosis of synovial sarcoma. The patient remains free of discernible disease 30 months after surgery. Esophageal sarcomas are rare tumors. This appears to be the second reported case of esophageal synovial sarcoma in a child.

The synovial sarcoma is a mesenchymal tumour that is very rare in the head and neck region. This is a report on two cases. In a 30-year old patient the tumour arose near the thyroid gland and the hypopharynx. He died in spite of surgical removal, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, one year after the first symptoms. An 8-year old boy was affected by a synovial sarcoma near the hyoid bone and is without recurrence after surgical removal, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Subsequently, the main diagnostic characteristics of these tumours are discussed. A better prognosis of the tumours associated with t

Primary synovial sarcoma of the hypopharynx is an extremely rare neoplasm. Only 16 cases could be traced in the literature so far. An additional case, in a 29-year-old male patient, is presented. Progressive disturbance of deglutition and speech, chocking sensation, and mild respiratory distress were his original complaints. Our case differs from those previously reported in that a) the tumor was pedunculated, and the site of its attachment could be very well-defined, and b) unusual intratumoral destructive hemorrhage turned the case into an emergency. The pedicle was radically excised togethe

Intra-abdominal synovial sarcomas are a rare type of soft tissue sarcomas that arise in the soft tissues of the abdominal cavity. They account for less than 1% of all primary synovial sarcoma cases. We report a case of a male patient in his early 30s who presented to the hospital with abdominal pain of 2 weeks duration. On examination, a mass was felt in the left mid-abdomen. MRI revealed a 12.7 cm×8.2 cm×8.6 cm soft tissue mass on the mesentery of the jejunum. The patient underwent surgical resection of the tumour, and the final pathology was synovial sarcoma, pT2b, grade 3.

Synovial sarcoma (SS) comprises less than 1% of head and neck cancers, and less than five cases of adult primary tracheal SS have been described. This case describes a patient encountered at a community-based academic hospital, and retrospective chart review was performed for data collection. A woman in her forties presented with shortness of breath due to a superior mediastinal mass found to be an unresectable primary tracheal SS. Primary treatment resorted to curative-intent radiation therapy. Subsequent metastasis required systemic chemotherapy with pazopanib. To the best of our knowledge,

Synovial sarcomas (SS) represent a unique subset of soft tissue sarcomas (STS) and account for 5-10% of all STS. Synovial sarcoma differs from other STS by the relatively young age at diagnosis and clinical presentation. Synovial sarcomas have unique genomic characteristics and are driven by a pathognomonic t(X;18) chromosomal translocation and subsequent formation of the SS18:SSX fusion oncogenes. Similar to other STS, diagnosis can be obtained from a combination of history, physical examination, magnetic resonance imaging, biopsy and subsequent pathology, immunohistochemistry and molecular a

Background Synovial sarcoma is an aggressive soft tissue cancer of extremities mainly and rare in head and neck region, whereas rarest in ethmoidal sinus as only three cases have been reported till date. Case Reports We managed two cases of synovial sarcoma who presented with nasal obstruction, epistaxis, and swelling around the nasofacial region. Endoscopic nasal biopsy and immunohistochemistry markers confirmed synovial sarcoma in both the cases. While one case was managed by surgery and chemoradiation, the second patient received two cycles of ifosfamide-based chemotherapy and succumbed a

Maffucci syndrome is a rare nonhereditary disorder comprising of lymphovascular malformations and multiple enchondromas, which may be associated with several internal malignancies. This report describes a new association of Maffucci syndrome with pedal synovial sarcoma. Our case is also remarkable as lymphangioma circumscriptum is the sole lymphovascular component, which has been rarely reported. The aim of this report is to generate awareness about this rare condition and also highlight the importance of screening for malignancies in this disorder.

Synovial sarcoma (SS) is a highly malignant tumor that accounts for 10% of all soft-tissue sarcomas. Primary SS arising from the lung is extremely rare, and the prognosis is poor. We report a case of pulmonary SS presenting with a mass lesion invading the right upper and middle lobes, extending to the mediastinum and the chest wall. After tru-cut biopsy, surgical resection was performed. The final diagnosis was SS (biphasic type) based on histological and immunohistochemical findings. There are no guidelines for optimal treatment due to the rarity of these tumors. Current treatment includes su

We report a case of primary intra-abdominal synovial sarcoma of the omentum in a 66-year-old man hospitalized for intermittent abdominal fullness for 1-2 months and tenesmus for 2 weeks. The patient had a palpable mass that was solid, hard and with well-defined thickness within his abdomen. A huge heterogeneous mass lesion over the middle abdomen that started from S2, S3 of the liver to the transverse colon was shown on abdominal computed tomography. The major cell types of the tissue mass were confirmed to be spindle and epithelial cells, which was consistent with biphasic synovial sarcoma ac

OBJECTIVE: The objective of our study was to characterize patterns of calcifications in synovial sarcoma.
CONCLUSION: The presence of fine, stippled calcifications in a soft-tissue mass should raise suspicion for synovial sarcoma. These calcifications can coalesce to a deposit that mimics hydroxyapatite deposition disease or soft-tissue osteosarcoma. Spicules of calcification were a less common finding in our series; the appearance of spicules in synovial sarcomas overlaps with that of other soft-tissue sarcomas such as soft-tissue osteosarcoma and liposarcoma.

Synovial sarcoma is a well defined morphologic entity extensively researched in literature. Synovial sarcoma displays a wide spectrum of clinical presentations and histologic appearances that may give rise to diagnostic dilemmas. One such unusual site in the head and neck area is the tongue. We report a case of monophasic synovial sarcoma of the tongue in a 22-year-old male. Microscopically, this tumor mimicked a poorly differentiated carcinoma which is more common at this site though the patient was young for this type of tumor. On immunohistochemistry, neoplastic cells were positive for cyto

Synovial sarcomas comprise between 5% to 10% of all soft tissue sarcomas in adults. It has a predilection for young adults and is one of the more frequently misdiagnosed soft tissue sarcomas. It is not unusual for synovial sarcoma to present initially after a traumatic event. It most commonly occurs in close proximity to a large joint. The most common site for metastasis is the lung, followed by lymph node involvement. Synovial sarcoma rarely metastasizes to the skeleton and when it occurs, it most commonly involves the long bones. Cranial metastasis is rare and has only been described in 2 pr

This is a case of a 36-year-old gentleman with haemophilia A who was presented with an acute atraumatic soft tissue swelling in the right thigh. Open biopsy was performed with the resultant diagnosis of a synovial cell sarcoma. Although the clinical findings were nonspecific they could easily have been found in a bleeding haemophilic pseudotumour. The findings reported on MRI scan initially were highly consistent with those present in patients with mild haemophilia. An important part of orthopaedic management in haemophilia is concerned with intraarticular and intramuscular bleeding. Haematoma

Synovial sarcoma is a malignant mesenchymal neoplasm that accounts for approximately 10% of all soft tissue sarcomas. These tumors most commonly occur in the extremities of young adults but are not restricted to this site and can arise in virtually any organ system. Synovial sarcomas originating in the mediastinum are exceptionally rare and are often mistaken for other, more common neoplasms in this location, especially since there are no specific imaging characteristics or clinical manifestations. Contrary to synovial sarcomas of the extremities, mediastinal tumors more commonly affect male p
