[Historical Review of Kaposi sarcoma in pre-HAART era: evolution with different chemotherapy schedules and remission with ganciclovir use].

UNLABELLED: Ganciclovir has shown in vitro anti-human herpesvirus-8 activity, Kaposi sarcoma agent. We analyzed all Kaposi sarcoma patients from 1985 to 1996 pre-HAART era and identified Kaposi sarcoma/AIDS patients who achieved complete remission prior to HAART use. RESULTS: We saw 155 Kaposi sarcoma patients up to 1996, 150 with enough information, only 12 received ganciclovir, eight of them for ≥ 21 days; four died within 16 weeks of ganciclovir administration. We identified four male patients with extensive Kaposi sarcoma with complete remission achieved after ganciclovir for CMV end-orga

Brachial Plexopathy due to Myeloid Sarcoma in a Patient With Acute Myeloid Leukemia After Allogenic Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Transplantation.

Myeloid sarcoma is a solid, extramedullary tumor comprising of immature myeloid cells. It may occur in any organ; however, the invasion of peripheral nervous system is rare. Herein, we report the case of myeloid sarcoma on the brachial plexus. A 37-year-old woman with acute myelogenous leukemia achieved complete remission after chemotherapy. One year later, she presented right shoulder pain, progressive weakness in the right upper extremity and hypesthesia. Based on magnetic resonance images (MRI) and electrophysiologic study, a provisional diagnosis of brachial plexus neuritis was done and he

[Respective frequency and radioclinical features of 150 lung diseases observed in 125 patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection].

Seventy out of 125 patients with HIV infection had diffuse alveolo-interstitial pneumonia usually caused by an opportunistic infection, notably pneumocystosis. Nineteen patients had only localized lung opacities due either to usual or tuberculous bacterial infections or to Kaposi's sarcoma. In 10 patients with pleural effusion or mediastinal adenopathy, the condition was due to Kaposi's sarcoma (n = 4) or to mycobacteriosis (n = 3). An opportunistic or usual infection was demonstrated in 17 of the 51 patients with normal radiography of the chest. Finally, 37 patients free from infectious or tu

[Extraskeletal Ewing's sarcoma of the parapharyngeal space: a case report].

Extraskeletal Ewing's sarcoma is a malignant tumour most often found in children and adolescents, but rarely in the cervicofacial region. When it affects the parapharyngeal space, diagnosis is often delayed, resulting in poor prognosis. We here report the clinical case of a 37-year-old female patient admitted to the emergency department with inspiratory dyspnea, asthenia and anorexia. Cervical spine MRI revealed a process in the right parapharyngeal space obstructing almost the entire pharyngeal lumen. Anatomopathological, immunohistochemical and cytogenetic examinations showed extraskeletal E

Clear cell sarcoma in unusual sites mimicking metastatic melanoma.

BACKGROUND: Clear cell sarcoma is an aggressive rare malignant neoplasm with morphologic and immunohistochemical similarities to malignant melanoma. Both disease entities display melanin pigment and melanocytic markers, making differentiation between the two difficult. Although clear cell sarcoma cases in the literature have mainly involved deep soft tissues of the extremities, trunk or limb girdles, we report here two cases of primary clear cell sarcoma in unusual sites and describe their clinicopathologic findings. CASE SUMMARY: The first case involves a 37-year-old female, who presented wi

[Locally advanced soft-tissue sarcomas. An innovating triad to avoid amputation: isolated limb perfusion, TNFalpha, and free microsurgical flap].

We retrospectively studied the benefits of isolated limb perfusion combined with TNFalpha administration and free flap reconstruction in locally advanced soft-tissue sarcomas of the limbs. Between 2000 and 2008, we treated 37 patients (22 women and 15 men) with locally advanced soft tissue sarcomas. The sarcomas were located in the lower and upper limbs in respectively 26 and 11 cases, and had a mean diameter of 15 cm and 12 cm, respectively. They were multifocal in 8 cases and recurrent in 15 cases. Seventeen patients received neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Sarcoma excision was combined with a com

Pleural Kaposi sarcoma: an unusual clinical case.

Kaposi sarcoma is a low-grade mesenchymal tumor associated with human herpesvirus-8. Here we describe the case of a 37-year old woman, who underwent to kidney and liver transplant for congenital hepatic fibrosis and bilateral polycystic kidney, with successive immunosuppressive therapy. After 5 years from first transplant, she developed cutaneous, mucosal, pleural and nodal localizations of Kaposi sarcoma, without lung lesions. Because of an initial clinical presentation with an important nodal and pleural involvement, a diagnosis of a lymphoproliferative disease was suspected. Pathological ex

Phlegmonous gastritis associated with Kaposi sarcoma: a case report and review of the literature.

We report a case of phlegmonous gastritis associated with Kaposi sarcoma in a 37-year-old, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive man who presented with an acute abdomen. Computed tomographic scan revealed free fluid in the abdominal cavity and a thickened gastric wall. A partial gastrectomy was performed. The resected portion of stomach had a hemorrhagic, necrotic thickened wall and showed extensive, acute suppurative inflammation, especially in the submucosa, with focal transmural involvement. Beneath an area of healing ulceration, a focus of Kaposi sarcoma was present. Group A beta-hem

Sarcomas arising in Paget disease of bone: a clinicopathologic analysis of 70 cases.

CONTEXT: Sarcomatous transformation is a rare complication of Paget disease of bone. Prognosis in patients with other types of sarcomas arising in bone has improved in the last several decades because of therapeutic advances. However, because of the rarity of Paget sarcoma, outcome studies in these patients are limited. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether prognosis for Paget sarcoma has improved. DESIGN: Seventy cases of sarcomas arising in the setting of Paget disease were collected, and the histologic and clinical findings were reviewed. Clinical follow-up was obtained in 67 cases. RESULTS: S

Huge primary mediastinal synovial sarcoma fully occupying the right hemithorax.

Primary mediastinal synovial sarcomas are exceedingly uncommon tumors. Herein, we present the case of primary mediastinal synovial sarcoma (monophasic spindle cell-shaped variant) fully occupying the right hemithorax in a 37-year-old woman who presented to clinic with a 2-month history of right-sided chest pain and shortness of breath. Although extremely rare, however, synovial sarcoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of all monophasic and biphasic spindle cell neoplasms of the mediastinum. Despite molecular testing for (t[x; 18] [p11.2; q11.2]) is characteristically positive

Kaposi's sarcoma and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Postmortem findings in twenty-four cases.

Autopsy results on twenty-four patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and Kaposi's sarcoma were reviewed. At postmortem, 29% of patients had evidence of visceral Kaposi's sarcoma without skin lesions. The most common sites for visceral involvement with Kaposi's sarcoma were as follows: lung (37%), gastrointestinal tract (50%), and lymph nodes (50%). At the time of death, only 25% of patients had evidence of cutaneous disease alone. The patients survived up to 36 months after the diagnosis of AIDS was made according to the specific diagnostic criteria established by the Centers

Ewing Sarcoma: Rare Metastasis to the Pancreas.

Ewing sarcoma is a highly aggressive malignancy of bone or soft tissue, which may present with metastasis for 20%-25% of patients. The most common sites of metastatic lesions are the bone, bone marrow, and lungs. When metastatic lesions present within rare visceral sites, such as the pancreas, it may lead to an incorrect diagnosis of small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma. We report a case of a 37-year-old man with metastatic Ewing sarcoma involving the pancreas, confirmed by imaging, sequencing, fluorescence in situ hybridization, and histology, which was initially mistaken for small cell neuroe

Laparoscopic-endoscopic cooperative surgery for primary gastric synovial sarcoma: a rare case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Synovial sarcoma is a malignant mesenchymal tumor, accounting for approximately 5-10% of all soft tissue sarcomas. To date, only 52 cases of primary gastric synovial sarcoma have been reported in the English-language literature. We report a rare case of primary gastric synovial sarcoma in a young woman. To the best of our knowledge, this is the second case in the past decade treated using combined laparoscopic and endoscopic surgery, and the first such case reported in China using this approach. Osteoporosis in children and young adults: a late effect after chemotherapy for bone sarcoma.

BACKGROUND: Premature bone loss after childhood chemotherapy may be underestimated in patients with bone sarcoma. Methotrexate (MTX), a standard agent in osteosarcoma protocols, reportedly reduces bone mineral density (BMD). The literature, however, has reported cases of BMD reduction in patients with Ewing's sarcoma treated without MTX. Thus, it is unclear whether osteoporosis after chemotherapy relates to MTX or to other factors. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We therefore asked whether (1) young patients with a bone sarcoma had BMD reduction, (2) patients treated with MTX had lower BMD, and (3) other

Left ventricular intimal sarcoma: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Secondary cardiac tumours are much more common compared with primary (100-1000 times). The majority of the primary cardiac tumours are benign; however, almost a quarter are malignant, and 95% of these are sarcomas. The rarest type of primary malignant cardiac sarcoma is intimal (spindle cell) sarcoma. CASE SUMMARY: A 37-year-old woman presented with episodes of breathlessness. Initially treated for a chest infection, however, the patient continued to deteriorate and presented to the emergency department. Linkage of AIDS and cancer registries in Italy.

We report the first results of a comparison between the Italian Registry on AIDS (RAIDS) and 13 population-based cancer registries (about 8 million population in 1991) with respect to the notification of Kaposi's sarcoma and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Routine indicators of data quality and completeness have been found in both types of registry, consistent with the best international standards. A linkage process was carried out on about 339,000 cancer notifications and 3,134 AIDS notifications and was herein restricted to individuals under the age of 50. Out of 243 Kaposi's sarcomas at either type

Survival of children with soft-tissue sarcoma in Europe since 1978: results from the EUROCARE study.

Soft-tissue sarcomas account for 5--8% of all childhood cancers in European countries. In the EUROCARE childhood cancer study, there were 2163 registrations from 17 countries for soft-tissue sarcomas in patients aged 0--14 years during 1978--1989. Of this total, three-quarters were contributed by childhood cancer registries in Germany and the UK. Age-standardised 5-year survival rates of children diagnosed during 1985--1989 were 65% (95% confidence interval (CI) 56--72) for rhabdomyosarcoma, 68% (95% CI 58--77) for fibrosarcoma, 78% (95% CI: 64--87) for other specified soft-tissue sarcomas exc
