Malnutrition, Sarcopenia, and Malnutrition-Sarcopenia Syndrome in Older Adults with COPD.

PURPOSE: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the fourth leading cause of death in the world population. In addition to airflow obstruction, COPD is associated with multiple systemic manifestations, including impaired nutritional status or malnutrition and changes in body composition (low muscle mass, LMM). Poor nutritional status and sarcopenia in subjects with COPD leads to a worse prognosis and increases health-related costs. Data from previous studies indicate that 30-60% of subjects with COPD are malnourished, 20-40% have low muscle mass, and 15-21.6% have sarcopenia. This stud

[Aging-related frailty and sarcopenia. Kampo medicine for frailty and sarcopenia.].

In Japan, which is entering a super-aged society, the prevention of long-term care and bedridden caused by frailty and sarcopenia have been recognized as an urgent need. The pathology of frailty and sarcopenia includes broad problems of senility. A traditional herbal medicine is known to improve symptoms across the organs, many herbal medicines administered by examining the balance of mind and body are effective for frailty and sarcopenia. "The Safety Drug Therapy Guideline 2015 for the Elderly" was fully revised in 2015. In this guideline, traditional herbal medicines, which are suggested to

The role of sarcopenia in fragility fractures of the pelvis - is sarcopenia an underestimated risk factor?

BACKGROUND: Fragility fractures of the pelvis (FFPs) represent a significant health burden, particularly for the elderly. The role of sarcopenia, an age-related loss of muscle mass and function, in the development and impact of these fractures is not well understood. This study aims to investigate the prevalence and impact of osteoporosis and sarcopenia in patients presenting with FFPs. METHODS: This retrospective study evaluated 140 elderly patients with FFPs. The diagnosis of sarcopenia was assessed by psoas muscle area (PMA) and the height-adjusted psoas muscle index (PMI) measured on comp

Determinants of dementia risk among older adults with probable sarcopenia and sarcopenia.

BACKGROUND: Probable sarcopenia is a condition related to low muscle strength which increases the risk of sarcopenia. Both probable sarcopenia and sarcopenia increases the risk of dementia. The aim of this study is to investigate the factors associated with dementia among probable sarcopenia and sarcopenia older adults. It was hypothesized that comorbidities among probable sarcopenia and sarcopenia subjects may elevate the risk of dementia. METHODOLOGY: This study involved 194 older adults with probable sarcopenia and sarcopenia aged 60 years and above. Sarcopenia was assessed using the Asian

Handgrip strength asymmetry as a new biomarker for sarcopenia and individual sarcopenia signatures.

BACKGROUND: Although handgrip strength (HGS) asymmetry has clinical screening utility, its relevance to sarcopenia is unknown. This study examined the relationship between HGS asymmetry and sarcopenia signatures, and explored the relevance of circulating neural/neuromuscular markers. METHODS: 9403 individuals aged 18-92 years participated in this study. Maximal HGS and skeletal muscle index (SMI) were determined using hand dynamometry and DXA. Sarcopenia was diagnosed upon the presence of low HGS and low SMI, according to cohort-specific thresholds. Plasma biomarkers were measured by ELISA in

Global prevalence of sarcopenia and severe sarcopenia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is defined as the loss of muscle mass and strength. Despite the seriousness of this disease, a single diagnostic criterion has not yet been established. Few studies have reported the prevalence of sarcopenia globally, and there is a high level of heterogeneity between studies, stemmed from the diagnostic criteria of sarcopenia and the target population. The aims of this systematic review and meta-analysis were (i) to identify and summarize the diagnostic criteria used to define sarcopenia and severe sarcopenia and (ii) to estimate the global and region-specific prevalenc

Gastrointestinal Diseases and Sarcopenia.

Sarcopenia is a progressive systemic condition characterized by a reduced skeletal muscle mass, strength, and physical function. In gastrointestinal diseases, it is increasingly recognized as a clinically relevant factor associated with symptom burden, treatment tolerance, postoperative complications, quality of life, and survival. Its development reflects not only aging but also disease-related malnutrition, anorexia, malabsorption, chronic inflammation, cachexia, altered gut motility, defecatory dysfunction, dysbiosis, and reduced physical activity levels. Conversely, sarcopenia can impair s

Sarcopenia in gastrointestinal cancers.

Sarcopenia, characterized by loss of skeletal muscle mass and function, is a highly prevalent yet often overlooked condition in patients with gastrointestinal (GI) cancers. Emerging evidence suggests that sarcopenia is a significant predictor of poor prognosis across various stages of GI cancers. Among surgical candidates, preoperative sarcopenia is consistently associated with higher rates of postoperative complications, longer hospital stays, and lower recurrence-free and overall survival rates. Among patients receiving neoadjuvant, adjuvant, or palliative chemotherapy, sarcopenia is associa

Mitochondrial involvement in sarcopenia.

Sarcopenia lowers the quality-of-life for millions of people across the world, as accelerated loss of skeletal muscle mass and function contributes to both age- and disease-related frailty. Physical activity remains the only proven therapy for sarcopenia to date, but alternatives are much sought after to manage this progressive muscle disorder in individuals who are unable to exercise. Mitochondria have been widely implicated in the etiology of sarcopenia and are increasingly suggested as attractive therapeutic targets to help restore the perturbed balance between protein synthesis and breakdo

Frailty, Sarcopenia and Osteoporosis.

Frailty, sarcopenia and osteoporosis are entities specific to the elderly, who share some risk factors. For this reason, their relationship has been studied in different works, which have provided disparate results, probably because these studies have not always focused on the same aspects. This article reviews the relationship of frailty and sarcopenia with osteoporosis.

Sarcopenia and Heart Failure.

Modifications of lean mass are a frequent critical determinant in the pathophysiology and progression of heart failure (HF). Sarcopenia may be considered one of the most important causes of low physical performance and reduced cardiorespiratory fitness in older patients with HF. Sarcopenia is frequently misdiagnosed as cachexia. However, muscle wasting in HF has different pathogenetic features in sarcopenic and cachectic conditions. HF may induce sarcopenia through common pathogenetic pathways such as hormonal changes, malnutrition, and physical inactivity; mechanisms that influence each other

Nutrition, frailty, and sarcopenia.

Frailty and sarcopenia are important concepts in the quest to prevent physical dependence, as geriatrics are shifting towards identifications of early stages of disability. Definitions of both sarcopenia and frailty are still developing, and both concepts clearly overlap in their physical aspects. Malnutrition (both undernutrition and obesity) plays a key role in the pathogenesis of frailty and sarcopenia. The quality of the diet along the lifespan has a close relation with the incidence of both entities, and nutritional interventions may be able to reduce the incidence or revert either of the

Sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity.

Sarcopenia is an age-associated loss of muscle mass and decline in muscle strength; it is common in older adults and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Despite its prevalence, there is currently no universally adopted definition of sarcopenia. In addition to low muscle mass measurements, recent research has recognized the importance of muscle strength and physical performance. Aging induces changes in body composition, such as an increase in visceral fat and reduced muscle mass. Recently, the new concept of sarcopenic obesity has emerged, reflecting a combination of sarcop

Sarcopenia and fragility fractures.

Sarcopenia, a reduction in muscle mass and muscle function, is considered one of the hallmarks of the aging process. Current views consider sarcopenia as the consequence of multiple medical, behavioural and environmental factors that characterize aged individuals. Likewise bone fragility is known to depend on several pathogenetic mechanisms leading to bone mass loss and reduction of bone strength. Muscle weakness, fear of falls, falls and subsequent fractures are associated to concurrent sarcopenia and osteoporosis and lead to restricted mobility, loss of autonomy and reduced life expectancy.

Consilience in sarcopenia of cirrhosis.

Cirrhosis is the consequence of progression of many forms of necro-inflammatory disorders of the liver with hepatic fibrosis, hepatocellular dysfunction, and vascular remodeling. Reversing the primary hepatic disorder, liver transplantation, and controlling the complications are the major management goals. Since the former options are not available to the majority of cirrhotics, treating complications remains the mainstay of therapy. Sarcopenia and/or cachexia is the most common complication and adversely affects survival, quality of life, development of other complications of cirrhosis, and o

[Clinical consequences of sarcopenia].

The concept of sarcopenia implies loss of muscle mass and function. It is a condition that accompanies aging, although it not always has clinical consequences. It is produced by many factors: nervous system (loss of alpha motor units in the spinal cord), muscular (loss of muscle quality and mass), humoral (decrease in anabolic hormones such as testosterone, estrogens, GH, and increase of several interleukines), and life style (physical activity). The main clinical consequences of sarcopenia relate with functional independence. Thus, the sarcopenic elderly has greater difficulty walking, or do
