Mange caused by Sarcoptes scabiei (Acari: Sarcoptidae) in wild raccoon dogs, Nyctereutes procyonoides, in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan.

Parasitological and histopathological examinations were performed in 25 raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides) obtained in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, all of which were found to be heavily infected with Sarcoptes scabiei. The mites detected on these raccoon dogs were morphologically indistinguishable from the human species, and no Demodex mites were detected. Histopathological examinations showed prominent hyperkeratosis and acanthosis with eczema, and numerous burrows containing mites were observed in the epidermis. The enzootic dermatitis of wild raccoon dogs in recent years was clearly dem

Hyperkeratotic mange caused by Sarcoptes scabiei (Acariformes: Sarcoptidae) in juvenile human-habituated mountain gorillas (Gorilla gorilla beringei).

To facilitate ecotourism and behavioral research, free-ranging mountain gorillas (Gorilla gorilla beringei) have been habituated to humans. During routine health monitoring, five juvenile gorillas were observed with active crusted dermatitis and alopecia. Papular and vesicular lesions and crusts with papular eruption and oozing were numerous and disseminated over the body of one gorilla with a confirmed infestation of scabies. In this gorilla, the hyperkeratotic crusts were loose and thick with a flaky and scaly appearance. Histologically, the epidermis was thickened, displayed hyperkeratosis

[The parasite-host specificity of the itch mite Sarcoptes scabiei (Acariformes: Sarcoptidae) in man and animals (a review of the literature)].

The primary parasitic relations between the itch mite Sarcoptes scabiei (L.) and man are confirmed indirectly by the presence in the family Sarcoptidae of close genera, members of which parasitize primates. Judging from the composition of domestic and wild animals-hosts, the source of their infection with S. scabiei was man that gave rise to numerous forms of mites specific to individual species of hosts or their related groups belonging to different taxonomic ranks. Three types of host relations and, accordingly, forms of sarcoptosis are suggested at the infection from an alien host: pseudosa

Density of itch mite, Sarcoptes scabiei (Acari: Sarcoptidae) and temporal development of cutaneous hypersensitivity in swine mange.

Experimental infestations of Sarcoptes scabiei (De Geer) were established to study development of cutaneous hypersensitivity in pigs. Forty-eight pigs in six isolation rooms were used in two trials lasting 51 and 65 days, respectively. Treatments of 0 (control), 100 (low dose), and 1000 mites (high dose) per pig were randomly assigned to rooms. Intradermal skin tests with a sterile mite extract were done weekly to assess hypersensitivity. Control pigs never responded to the extract, whereas most infested pigs progressed through phases of (1) no response, (2) delayed hypersensitivity alone, (3)

Extracts of scabies mites (Sarcoptidae: Sarcoptes scabiei) modulate cytokine expression by human peripheral blood mononuclear cells and dendritic cells.

We performed a series of experiments to determine if human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from a healthy donor and dendritic cells (NHDCs) derived from these PBMCs reacted to molecules in a scabies extract. PBMCs extravasate from the circulatory system and enter tissues such as scabietic lesions, where monocytes become macrophages. Cells were cultured in medium alone or medium containing 50 microg/ml of Sarcoptes scabiei (SS) extract, 50 ng/ml E. coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS), or SS + LPS together. Supernatants were collected and assayed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)

Artificial Infestation of Sarcoptes scabiei (Acari: Sarcoptidae) in Rabbits Exhibits Progressive Pathological Changes, Apoptosis, and Keratinization in the Skin.

Sarcoptes scabiei (S. scabiei) is an ectoparasite that can infest humans and 150 mammalian host species, primarily causing pruritus, crust, and alopecia. However, neither the pathological process of host skin under S. scabiei infection nor the mechanism of S. scabiei infection in regulating apoptosis and keratinization of host skin has been studied yet. In this study, a total of 56 rabbits were artificially infested with S. scabiei, and the skin samples were collected at seven different time points, including 6 h, 12 h, day 1, day 3, 1 week, 4 weeks, and 8 weeks, whereas a group of eight rabbi

Sarcoptes scabiei (Acari: Sarcoptidae) mite extract modulates expression of cytokines and adhesion molecules by human dermal microvascular endothelial cells.

The inflammatory and immune responses seen with the worldwide disease scabies, caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei (De Geer) (Acari: Sarcoptidae), are complex. Clinical symptoms are delayed for weeks in patients when they are infested with scabies for the first time. This study was undertaken to elucidate the role of the human dermal microvascular endothelial cell (HMVEC-D) in modulating the inflammatory and immune responses in the skin to S. scabiei. Extracts of S. scabiei were incubated with HMVEC-D and the expression of adhesion molecules and chemokine receptors on the cells and the secret

Scientometric Evaluation of the Itch Mite, Sarcoptes scabiei (Acari: Sarcoptidae): The Last Four Decades of Global Academic Output on Scabies.

OBJECTIVE: Scabiosis, the infestation of the skin with Sarcoptes scabiei, is a neglected tropical disease, with at least 200 million people being infested with the parasite at any time. It is estimated that scabies is responsible for 0.07% of the total burden of disease worldwide. Objective of this study is to perform a scientometric analysis of S. scabiei literature using the Web of Science Core Collection database for the years 1981-2020. METHODS: All documents indexed between 1981 and 2020 in scabies literature were analyzed by using a search string including keywords of "scabies", "Sarcop

Evidence that scabies mites (Acari: Sarcoptidae) influence production of interleukin-10 and the function of T-regulatory cells (Tr1) in humans.

We performed experiments to determine whether an extract of Sarcoptes scabiei (De Geer) influenced cytokine expression by human T-lymphocytes. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells from five sensitized donors and four donors without sensitization to scabies mites were challenged with a T-cell mitogen alone, with scabies extract (SS) alone, or with mitogen and SS together. Supernatants were analyzed for the cytokines interferon-gamma (IFNgamma), interleukin (IL)-2, IL-4, and IL-10. No IL-2 or IL-4 was produced in response to scabies extract. Cells from both naive and sensitized donors produced lar

[Development of the larvae inside the body of the itch mites Sarcoptes scabiei (L.) (Sarcoptidae) and the ontogenetic level of eclosion in mites of the order Acariformes].

Several larvae-containing females of Sarcoptes have been found in skin biopsy of heavily infected Rangifer tarandas L. A. viviparity hypothesis is disproved. The larvae in the body of egg-containing dead females of the human Sarcoptes were obtained by incubation in the suspended water drop. Embryogenesis types as well as eclosion stage in Acariformes are discussed. The term "postmortal pregnancy" is proposed.

[Evaluation of an intracutaneous test using a Sarcoptes mite extract solution (Acari: Sarcoptidae) as a method for detection of Sarcoptes mite-infested dogs].

Sarcoptes infestation in dogs, caused by Sarcoptes canis, is a relatively common disease in small animal practice. The parasites may induce severe allergic skin reactions. By means of clinical symptoms a presumptive diagnosis should be made. For ensurement detection of mites in skin scrapings is necessary, but it is not easy to find the parasites. Serodiagnostic methods are helpful to confirm the diagnosis. They indicate specific antibody (circulating IgE) titer. Intracutaneous test by using allergen extracts as possible third way of diagnostic methods was tested comparatively with the existin

Sarcoptic mites (Acari, Sarcoptidae) parasitizing the brown rat Rattus norvegicus (Berkenhout, 1769) (Rodentia, Muridae), with a new data for the fauna of Poland.

One of the least researched groups of parasitic arthropods in the brown rat Rattus norvegicus (Berkenhout, 1769) are skin mites from the family of Sarcoptidae. Specimens representing two species of sarcoptic mites were found in 30 examined rats from northern Poland: Notoedres muris Megnin, 1877 and Trixacarus diversus Sellnick, 1944. The total prevalence and mean intensity of infestation were 13.3% and 3.3, respectively. At the same time, the list of sarcoptic mites occurring in Poland was completed with a new genus and new species--T. diversus.

[The variability of the itch mite Sarcoptes scabiei De Geer (Acariformes, Sarcoptidae) in connection with the epidemiology of scabies. A rank system for the variability of the chaetoid integument in females].

The variability of the naked section of the chaetoid cover of itch mite Sarcoptes scabiei De Geer females was studied. The sample used was divided into 5 grades by the number of undeveloped chaetoids. The structures surrounding the naked section, its size and dimensions of the female body were analysed in each grade of specimens. Such grade scale for describing the chaetoid cover proved to be useful for comparative analysis of human and animal forms of itch mite.

They define an elementary micropopulation and a focal population notions. A total of 763 females, collected from the hands of 100 patients with scabies were examined. The findings evidence that the degree of the chetoid covering joining in the mite females, assessed in grades, may be regarded as an indicator of the population status in the pathologic process.
