Radiation Scatter at Fluoroscopy-Guided Endoscopic Procedures: Building Toward Further Optimization.

INTRODUCTION: Exposure to ionizing radiation by endoscopy personnel during fluoroscopy-guided procedures remains a health hazard. We aimed to evaluate a novel lead flap-enhanced artificial intelligence-enabled fluoroscopy (LE-AIF) system to minimize radiation scatter. METHODS: We conducted prospective study of 218 patients who underwent fluoroscopy-guided endoscopic procedures using conventional AIF or LE-AIF systems. The primary outcome measure was comparison of radiation scatter to endoscopists. RESULTS: Radiation scatter to endoscopists and anesthesia personnel were significantly lower us

Dual-polarized metasurface design enabled by characteristic mode theory: integrated synergistic radiation and scattering functions.

Synergistic radiation-scattering integration holds great value for secure communication, electromagnetic stealth, and anti-interference wireless systems. Nevertheless, the intrinsically incompatible electromagnetic responses of radiation and scattering complicate the pursuit of a satisfactory trade-off in their collaborative co-design. Leveraging characteristic mode theory (CMT), this paper proposes an automated topology optimization strategy to facilitate the high-efficiency design of dual-polarized radiation-scattering integrated metasurfaces. The radiation and scattering responses of the me

Dosimetric measurement of scattered radiation for simulated head and neck radiotherapy with homemade oral phantom.

During radiotherapy for head and neck tumours, the oral cavity and cheek area would be inevitably exposed to high energy radiation; thus, the material surface of the teeth, dental restorations with high atomic number, or alloy prosthodontics would generate backscatter electrons that cause the buccal mucosa adjacent to these materials to receive localized high dose enhancement, which primarily leads to side effects or oral mucositis. Based on the size of the adult oral cavity, this study aimed to use acrylic resin to create an oral phantom with two grooves on the left and right sides for placem

[Analysis of Scattered Radiation in an Irradiated Body by Means of the Monte Carlo Simulation: Back-scatter Factors of Diagnostic X-rays in the Incident Surface Which is Not Flat].

To obtain patient entrance surface dose in X-ray photography, a calculation method based on measured exposure or air kerma radiated from X-ray tube is generally used. Two factors are necessary for this calculation: (1) exposure/air kerma to absorb dose conversion factor and (2) back-scatter factor (BSF) based on X-ray quality and on field size. These BSFs are commonly obtained by interpolation from existent data which were given for a water phantom whose entrance surface is flat. Since patient's surface in X-ray photograph is not flat, some error may occur when existent BSF is used in this cal

Effectiveness of additional lead shielding to protect staff from scattering radiation during endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography procedures.

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is often complex and involves long fluoroscopic times, with significant radiation exposure to medical staff. We investigated protective effects of an additional attached lead shielding device. The lead shielding device covered with the X-ray tube table (0.125 mm lead equivalent) during ERCP procedures. Fluoroscopy scatter radiation, with or without the lead shielding device, was measured using an acrylic phantom and a radiation survey meter. Measurements (25 points) were made at 50 cm intervals, at both 90 and 150 cm above the floor. We cre

Generation of dual-supercontinuum coherent radiation in acetone mixed with carbon disulfide by stimulated Raman scattering.

Stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) in a liquid has been a major focus of nonlinear optics. Traditional SRS generates single or cascaded Stokes components arising from spontaneous Raman noise. Herein, we report the formation mechanism of a specific spectrum-continuous spectroscopy technique based on SRS of mixed liquids. SRS of a mixed acetone and carbon disulfide solution is investigated by a pulsed Nd:YAG laser with a wavelength of 532 nm. Two remarkably asymmetric broadened SRS lines are obtained. When the volume ratio is 7:3, the broadened spectral bands are optimized. The supercontinuum spe

Relationship of scattering phase shifts to special radiation force conditions for spheres in axisymmetric wave-fields.

When investigating the radiation forces on spheres in complicated wave-fields, the interpretation of analytical results can be simplified by retaining the s-function notation and associated phase shifts imported into acoustics from quantum scattering theory. For situations in which dissipation is negligible, as taken to be the case in the present investigation, there is an additional simplification in that partial-wave phase shifts become real numbers that vanish when the partial-wave index becomes large and when the wave-number-sphere-radius product vanishes. By restricting attention to monop

Investigation of scatter radiation intensities in the cardiac catheter laboratory: novel versus traditional shielding solutions.

A manufacturer has released a novel shielding solution (NSS): Rampart M1128 and claimed that the personal protective equipment (PPE) can be removed. This study investigates the scatter intensities with the NSS or the traditional shielding solutions (TSS) including the ceiling-suspended screen and the tableside lead drape. Isodose maps were generated by two series of measurements with an anthropomorphic phantom using NSS and TSS. Three survey meters were positioned at different heights to measure the scatter intensities at the eye, chest, and pelvic levels. Additional measurements were made at

Description of Scatter Radiation Exposure to the Eye Lenses and Direct Exposure to the Hands in Orthopedic and Spinal Procedures.

INTRODUCTION: The increasing adoption of minimally-invasive spinal surgery has resulted in more frequent use of fluoroscopy, heightening concerns regarding radiation-induced cataracts and hand skin cancer in spinal surgeons. We investigated indirect and direct radiation exposure during spinal and orthopedic procedures to enhance radiation protection and explored the factors associated with high dose. METHODS: We used data from 60 procedures performed in the operating and fluoroscopy rooms of a hospital in Japan between January and July 2024. Radiation doses to the eye lenses of the surgeon an

Doses in eye lens, thyroid, and gonads, due to scattered radiation, during a CT radiodiagnosis study.

X-ray images used for radio-diagnosis are very useful to evaluate the progress of a treatment or to have a better diagnosis. However, during the interaction between the incoming X-ray beam and the body surface, part of the radiation is scattered out reaching other parts of the body delivering an undesirable dose. In this work the dose in eye lenses, thyroid, and gonads of a solid water phantom was measured using thermoluminescent dosimeters, while a Computer Tomography of the torso was obtained. With the measured absorbed dose the effective dose was calculated. Thus, the effective dose in the

Accelerated ultraviolet radiation-induced carcinogenesis in hepatocyte growth factor/scatter factor transgenic mice.

The dramatic rise in incidence of malignant melanoma experienced by populations both within the United States and throughout the world over the last several decades has been attributed to enhanced exposure to the UV spectrum of sunlight radiation. This hypothesis can now be tested using genetically engineered mouse models predisposed to malignant melanoma. Here we use melanoma-prone transgenic mice inappropriately expressing hepatocyte growth factor/scatter factor (HGF/SF) in the skin as an experimental model system to ascertain the consequences of a chronic regimen of suberythemal UV radiatio

Visualization of time-resolved scattered radiation distribution in a computed tomography room utilizing a semiconductor survey meter.

In diagnostic computed tomography (CT), radiological technologists and assisting staff may need to remain inside the CT room during patient assistance. Understanding temporal changes in scattered radiation distribution is therefore important for reducing occupational exposure. Conventional measurements mainly provide instantaneous dose rates or accumulated doses and are less suited to intuitively capturing temporal changes during CT scanning. This study conducted a fundamental investigation of a visualization approach, defined as dynamic dose distribution (DDD), based on time-resolved air kerm

Limiting Exposure to Scattered Radiation From a CT System Installed in a Two-Sided Deployable ISO-Shelter.

INTRODUCTION: Diagnostic radiology in the deployed military environment (in-theater diagnostic radiology) was greatly improved in the early 1990s with the addition of CT systems installed in military-grade one-sided expandable ISO-shelters. These shelters were provided with limited radiation shielding by several flexible lead curtains covering only a small portion of the shelter walls, necessitating placement of deployed CT systems at substantial distances from the field medical facility to limit exposures to personnel from secondary radiation. The newest generation deployable CT system is hou
