Schistosoma mansoni belongs to the dioecious Schistosomatidae. The occasional observation of males with rudimentary female characteristics is thought to attest the hermaphroditic roots of this parasite. Supernumerary testicular lobes also are recurrently seen in this helminth, but their morphology and origin are elusive. Here, we investigated the morphology of the supernumerary lobes from 15 S. mansoni males and similar structures of 2 females in whole mounts by brightfield and confocal laser scanning microscopy. The follicles in the females were not regarded as testicular lobes, but 1 male ha…

The avian schistosomatid Trichobilharzia ocellata plays an important role as causative agent of cercarial dermatitis of humans in Europe. In order to improve the taxonomic knowledge on this parasite, studies of miracidial chemo-orientation as well as experimental infections of different snail species were conducted using strains of T. ocellata and T. franki. Both schistosomes exhibited a high intermediate host specificity. The miracidia clearly preferred the SCW (snail-conditioned water) of the respective natural intermediate host to SCW of other sympatric snail species. T. ocellata proved to

White Pekin ducklings were injected with serum, lymphoid cells, or both, derived from donor birds which were immune to reinfection by the schistosome trematode, Trichobilharzia ocellata. Ducklings receiving serum and/or cells from susceptible birds, and untreated ducklings, served as controls. One set of experimental and control ducklings was kept alive and all of these birds passed viable T. ocellata eggs by day 20 indicating that protective immunity had not been transferred. Another set was killed 3-5 days after exposure. The schistosomula which were recovered from these were measured and in

BACKGROUND: Trichobilharzia regenti (T. regenti) is an avian schistosomatid fluke species that causes human cercarial dermatitis (HCD) in areas of aquaculture in northern Iran. Understanding the phylogenetic relationships and genetic diversity of this thread-like fluke will deepen our thoughtful of avian schistosomiasis epidemiology and lead to more effective HCD control in the region.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the life cycle of nasal Trichobilharzia in aquatic birds as well as aquatic snails and also identify the haplotype diversity of the isolates in Mazandaran Province, northern Iran.

Recently we developed the genus-specific markers of the avian schistosomes of the genus Trichobilharzia, the causative agents of human cercarial dermatitis. The 7 novel genome sequences of T. franki, T. regenti, and T. szidati revealed similarity with genome repeat region of African schistosome Schistosoma mansoni. In the present work we analyzed the 37 new T. szidati sequences to study intragenome variability and host specificity for the parasite from three localities of East Europe. DNAs were isolated from cercariae or single sporocysts obtained from 6 lymnaeid snails Lymnaea stagnalis and L

This study was undertaken to expand the current knowledge of the life cycle and adult morphology of the avian schistosome Austrobilharzia variglandis, which causes a marine cercarial dermatitis in New England. The specific objectives were to: (1) investigate the seasonality of the infection in the molluscan intermediate host, Ilyanassa obsoleta; (2) determine which bird species are acting as natural definitive hosts for the parasite; and (3) characterize the morphology of the parasite using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). One-thousand individuals of I. obsoleta were collected each month fo

The large American liver fluke, Fascioloides magna - introduced to Europe before 1875 - was the first non-indigenous trematode to be detected in Hungarian cervids in 1995. As the most precious deer population became infected in the Gemenc game reserve a study has been launched to assess the extent and the effect of F. magna infections and to examine the options for the treatment of infected deer populations. Livers of red deer shot during regular hunting were submitted for the survey and were investigated by necropsy for the presence of F. magna and other liver dwelling trematodes. Recovered p

Avian schistosomes are blood flukes parasitizing aquatic birds and snails, which are responsible for a zoonotic disease known as cercarial dermatitis, a hypersensitive reaction associated to the cutaneous penetration of furcocercariae. Despite its worldwide distribution, its knowledge is fragmentary in the Neotropics, with most of data coming from Argentina and Brazil. In Chile, there are only two mentions of these parasites from birds, and one human outbreak was associated to the genus "Trichobilharzia". However, the identity of such parasites is pending. The aim of this study was to identify

BACKGROUND: Neotricula aperta is the snail-intermediate host of the parasitic blood-fluke Schistosoma mekongi which causes Mekong schistosomiasis in Cambodia and the Lao PDR. Despite numerous phylogenetic studies only one DNA-sequence based population-genetic study of N. aperta had been published, and the origin, structure and persistence of N. aperta were poorly understood. Consequently, a phylogenetic and population genetic study was performed, with addition of new data to pre-existing DNA-sequences for N. aperta from remote and inaccessible habitats, including one new taxon from Laos and 50

The water rat, Nectomys squamipes, closely involved in schistosomiasis transmission in Brazil, has been found naturally infected simultaneously by Schistosoma mansoni and Echinostoma paraensei. Laboratory experiments were conducted to verify parasitic interaction in concurrent infection. It was replicated four times with a total of 42 water rats and essayed two times with 90 mice pre-infected with E. paraensei. Rodents were divided into three groups in each replication. A wild strain recently isolated from Sumidouro, RJ, and a laboratory strain of S. mansoni from Belo Horizonte (BH) was used.

This study explored genetic variation among and within Schistosoma japonicum, S. mekongi, and S. malayensis populations using two intronic regions of the taurocyamine kinase (TK) gene, the bridge intron (TkBridInt) and intron 6 of domain 1 (TkD1Int6). Both introns were successfully amplified across all species and confirmed as true intronic sequences. Sequence analysis of S. japonicum revealed high nucleotide polymorphism in both introns, with the population from Sorsogon (Philippines) exhibiting the highest genetic diversity. Haplotype network analysis indicated several region-specific haplot

Species of Trichobilharzia are the main etiological agents of cercarial dermatitis in humans, which is considered a re-emerging disease. Despite the diversity and global distribution of species of this genus, studies of Trichobilharzia are scarce in South America. The goal of our investigations is better understand the diversity, distribution and life cycle of avian schistosomes and their likely role in causing dermatitis in Brazil. As part of this effort, cercariae found in naturally infected Physa marmorata were identified by morphological and molecular (mitochondrial cox1, nuclear ITS1 and

Parasitological investigations carried out on birds in Iceland and France highlight the presence of four species of avian schistosomes from greylag geese (Anser anser L.): the european nasal species Trichobilharzia regenti and three visceral species, among which an unknown species isolated from blood vessels of the large intestine and liver. Morphological and molecular analyzes of different parasite stages (eggs, adults) revealed new species of Trichobilharzia genus – Trichobilharzia anseri sp. nov. Studies on host-parasite relationship under natural conditions, showed that the life-cycle incl

We report the first complete mitochondrial genome of visceral bird schistosome Trichobilharzia szidati (Platyhelminthes, Trematoda: Schistosomatidae). The circular genome is 14293 bp in length and contains 12 protein-coding genes, 12S and 16S rRNAs genes, 22 tRNAs and one non-coding region (202 bp) (accession number MF136777). Phylogenetic relationships based on 12 protein-coding gene sequences (PCG) of mitogenomes of a number of trematode and cestode species have shown that T. szidati is the closest genetic relative to nasal bird schistosome T. regenti. The complete mitogenome sequence of T. …

Schistosoma kisumuensis n. sp. is described based on 6 adult males and 2 adult females collected from the circulatory system of 3 murid rodent species, Pelomys isseli, Mastomys natalensis, and Dasymys incomtus. Specimens were collected from a single location, Nyabera Swamp, in Kisumu, Kenya in the Lake Victoria Basin. This new species is morphologically similar to members of the S. haematobium group, currently represented by 8 species parasitizing artiodactyls and primates, including humans. Schistosoma kisumuensis differs from these species by producing relatively small Schistosoma intercalat

Additional geographical distribution of the Central European populations of Schistosoma turkestanicum and the detectability of their eggs in droppings were investigated in red deer samples, because this rare species had previously been shown only in a single Hungarian habitat. Samples from visceral organs, intestinal contents, and droppings on the ground from 11 hunting areas of Hungary were investigated to find a new presence of this fluke. Close to the first site of detection in the Gemenc forest another habitat along the southern border of the country was found where the parasite lives in r
